The Book Thief is a clever and heart-clutching film that takes place in the 1930’s during the Holocaust. Young Liesel Meminger is an orphan who lives with her new parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann. As she goes on an adventure full of reading, discovery, family, love, and tragedy, she meets a boy named Rudy that lives nearby. Their relationship as friends all begins with a glance and changes as numerous incidents occur throughout the movie. When Rudy and Liesel first met, Liesel was just arriving in her new home. Rudy stole a glance at her while he was playing ball with some friends, and he instantly took a liking to her. He decided to use school as an excuse to walk with her in the morning and talk to her. Liesel was still a shy character at first, but after school ended, she and Rudy had a race to the end of the street. The momentum was Rudy’s …show more content…
For instance, the two walk to a large river in a field with plentiful trees one day and speak about their beliefs in Hitler and his army, much to the surprise of Rudy. When Liesel’s notebook is accidentally thrown into the river, he goes into the water and retrieves it for her and tries to be her hero. She is incredibly appreciative and her liking of him continuously grows, creating a change in their thoughts to one another and increasing the relationship from before. Later on in the film, Liesel’s street is bombed by mistake and her family dies. Rudy was in critical condition, and just before he passed on, he spoke his last words to her with beautiful passion and meaning. Liesel finally kissed him, but it was too late and he was gone when she did. Her act of remembering that kiss he wanted shows that she really loved that he was a person who cared about her, and this changes her past relationship to be even stronger than before. Therefore, these two moments in the movie changed Liesel and Rudy as they gradually became

As Liesel and Rudy are in the middle of their heist, Liesel is discovered by Ilsa Hermann. However instead of getting mad, or scared, or any other typical reaction of finding a thief, she stands there and just looks at liesel. While Liesel is about to leave, She gives a quick Heil of the Fuhrer and then internally questions how the mayor didn’t notice the cookies on the desk. She then comes to the realization that library actually belongs to Ilsa and not to the Mayor himself. This prompts Liesel to ask Ilsa if the room is hers, to witch the answer is yes. Liesel asks if She has ever read The Last Human Stranger, and Ilsa says that it’s “not bad.” With this Liesel tries to find something else to talk about, but Ilsa tells her that she should go, saying “He’s waiting for you.” This is because she can see Rudy’s hair through the window. This is the last time Liesel comes into the house before being taken in by the Hermanns, therefore it’s the last time that she comes into the house as a stranger.
The Book Thief is set in the time of World War 2 where the Holocaust is present and disaster is everywhere. Throughout the story, Liesel, the main character, learns that words are extremely powerful and hold the ability for people to use them for good or for evil. Among the disaster and altercations, Liesel uses her literature to comfort her and make herself more powerful due to her knowledge, which demonstrates the theme of the story, the comfort and power of literature and words softens the pain of loss.
Rudy Steiner is Liesel Meminger’s best friend. He has been by Liesel’s side at her best and even at her worst. He was the one that walked home with Liesel after she beat up Ludwig, got a book that was thrown into a river for her, stopped her from chasing Max and wanted a kiss. Rudy always wanted to help Liesel and would do anything to do so. Liesel was not judged by him for the actions she made. Rudy and Liesel had fun together as children. Children in this time period had to grow up very fast because of what was going on. Rudy went with Liesel
The Book Thief (2013), directed by Brian Percival, is about a young old girl living in Nazi Germany (between 1939 and 1943) in the fictional town of Molching, Germany. Death narrates the story of the main protagonist, Liesel Meminger, beginning when she is nine years old and suffering from the death of her brother and separation from her mother. Liesel then goes to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann (played by Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson). When Liesel arrives, she is illiterate and is made fun of in school by the other children. Hans, a painter and accordion player, teaches her how to read, using the book Liesel took from her brother's burial: The Grave Digger's Handbook. Over the course of the movie, Liesel develops a love for reading and decides to steal books because of the economical hardships associated with World War II. Liesel's foster parents also decide to help a young Jewish man named Max, whose father fought with Hans as in World War One as German soldiers. The Book Thief illustrates a different perspective in regards to the Nazi Regimen and its effects on the German people, specifically children.
Rudy constantly wanted to be with Liesel. When he could not, he felt cheated and indignant.

The Book Thief is about a young, sheltered German girl learning to read. Through her relationship with other characters, particularly Max, she grows and becomes more understanding of what happens in the world and the hardships that people have to face, especially in the time period of Nazi Germany. The Book Thief explores the ideas of death and war, but above all, the good qualities of humans and their worth. Leisel and Max are two very different people. A German and a Jew, young and old, accepted and marginalised. Through her relationship with Max, Leisel demonstrates great support, trust and kindness, all examples of human worth in times of great difficulty.
The book thief takes us through a journey of Liesel and her struggle through the times of the Holocaust. Moving to a new city and being adopted by a new family Lisel goes through many challenges by has her new friends and family to support her. We start with Hans Hubermann her new father, a generous down to earth man who is an ex soldier.
The beginning when they met, Rudy asked her if they could race, and if he won he could get a kiss. Liesel won, after that they became best friends and they would do anything for each other. Rudy would help Liesel steal books, Rudy would protect her from Franz finding about about Max. I mean he is really skinny and not fed well, and he jumped into a freezing cold lake during winter time to get a journal for Liesel. So Max was not found or the Nazis did not suspect there was a Jew in their basement. Liesel and Rudy would hang out almost every day after school outside to play soccer or to just talk, he was beside her in the bomb shelters, and they even attempted to run away together. While running away they even yelled that they hated Hitler together. If Rudy would have lived to go through life with Liesel, I think it would have been an amazing story of love at first sight. Liesel lost her friend to Death during the bombing on the street of Heaven but had him in heart for the rest of her
While ambulance chasing, Rudy meets a girl (Kelly Riker) who is in the hospital, due to her abusive husband (Cliff). The second time he beats her, Rudy and Kelly break into Cliff’s house to retrieve her things and have her leave for good. “I’ve never done anything like this before, and I’m quite nervous. In fact, we’re both scared” (Grisham 567). Before Rudy and Kelly breaks into the apartment, Rudy expresses his uneasiness towards their plan, but carries it out anyways. Cliff Riker comes home earlier than expected, and finds them. “… he coils the aluminum softball bat and whirls it at around mightily at my head” (Grisham 569). Cliff nearly kills Rudy with a bat, but Rudy dodged it and managed to push Cliff into a dresser. Later in the story, after Cliff dies, Rudy and Kelly leave Memphis forever. “We smile and giggle as the land flattens and the traffic lightens. Memphis is twenty miles behind us” (Grisham 598). In this quote, it shows that it was worth it for Rudy to pursue Kelly. Rudy takes a risk by trying to protect his love interest from a dangerous man, but in the end, it ended well with him and Kelly leaving their troubles behind in
His determination and loyalty make him very likeable, but also troublesome. His determination can be seen when he desperately wants to show Franz??? that he is capable of being successful, ‘In the middle of August, a Hitler Youth carnival was being held, and Rudy was intent on winning four events: the 1500, 400, 200, and of course, the 100.’ (Zucker ...), he was so intent that he actually won three out of the four events. However, this determination leads to the Nazis coming to recruit Rudy for a special school, causing his parents to decide to enrol Alex Steiner, Rudy's father.
When Liesel Meminger moves to Himmel Street to live with her new foster parents, she befriends a young German boy named Rudy Steiner. The two become best of friends as they accompany one another throughout the book, going about their daily activities and adventures they embark on along the way. At first the pair are just neighbors, with Rudy helping Liesel adjust to her new home that is the small town of Molching. Soon though, Rudy starts to develop feelings for Liesel that can only be described as him having a crush on her. He is very forward with her as the book goes on, as he has become more comfortable with her. However, it appears that Liesel does not really find it in her to have the same kind of feelings toward him. “As long as both
He explains that the bombs dropped on Liesel’s town were actually an accident due to a misread of a map, and that there were not even air raid sirens to warn the town of the oncoming attack. Death describes first taking the life of Rudy’s brothers, then his mother as they slept. Then, Death talks about coming for Rosa and Hans, their last thoughts being of Liesel. We cut to the next morning to see that the down is nothing more than rubble, and soldiers are searching for bodies and survivors in the mess. They are able to find Liesel alive as she had fallen asleep in the basement as she was reading where Max used to sleep, and being underground protected her. She is devastated to find the bodies of Hans and Rosa, and then runs next door as the soldiers pull Rudy from the wreckage. He is still alive but very badly hurt, and Liesel cries and she begs him to hold on. Rudy tries to say something to Liesel that sounds like the beginning of “I love you” as he’s always had a crush on Liesel, but he only gets out, “I l-“ before he grows quiet and death takes him as well. Only 3 or 4 years have passed from the beginning of the movie, but Liesel is now about 12 years old and orphaned again. She cries in the rubble for some time without anywhere to go, before she sees a car stop on the road about fifty feet away. It is Buergmeister and Ilsa Hermann, who have arrived to assess the devastation to the town (it’s implied that their home is relatively undamaged since they lived in a larger home just outside of town). Ilsa, who had become very close to Liesel in their time reading together, sees Liesel and the two run to each other, implying that Liesel has found a new home with Ilsa. Cut to a few years later – the war is over and Liesel is now a teenager working in a shop in town. Someone comes in and says that there’s someone here to see her, and she turns around to see Max smiling at her. Max has
