The Boy In Joseph Mccarthy's The Road

The Boy is the most important character and the only truly "humane" character in the novel. The boy is portrayed as a good and compassionate person, as he always seeks to help others in need; he considers being one of the "good guys" who carry the "fire" which could save the world from extinction. He is like a gem in McCarthy's The Road as he is presented as the last "hope" and "God" by the man. It is fascinating to see that the author believes that a kid who grew up in the world that follows the rule kill or be killed and survival to the fittest is able to feel sympathy to others even after all he went through which can be seen far-fetched, but that might be reason that his innocence and thought process is linked with hope and God. So you could be with me? Yes. So I could be with you. Okay." (McCarthy, 2006, 5-6). This quote reveals that the son is everything to the man, and if he would to die, he would die just so he could be together with him, which shows that the boy is his motivation to continue living. McCarthy describes the man as a caring father who has already lived in this post-apocalyptic world for a while before even the start of the novel, and he already has many skills required for survival such as tracking and usage of firearms. Since the child is the only thing that keeps him motivated and the one who pushes him to continue trying to survive; he does everything for the love of his boy, yet the moment there is even a slight risk of danger to the boy he ignores everything and does everything to protect his son. Since the man and the boy are the main protagonists of the story their share many interactions between them. It is important to note that McCarthy views the relationships between the son and the father quite normally. The important aspect of their interactions is that they rarely speak to each other, which lead them to rely on body language to supplement the lack of verbal communication with each
