In The Boy With The Striped Pajamas the whole story is following a boy named, Bruno. In the beginning of the story Bruno comes home to the house maid, Maria, packing all of his belongings "even the things he had hidden in the back and that were nobody else's business." Soon after he finds out that him, his family, and even the house servants were to move from Berlin to Out-With (Auschwitz, Germany) for his father's job. When having just arrived, Bruno dislikes it immediately, it's nothing like the five floor mansion with all the nooks and crannies to explore; the house has peeling paint, unfriendly soldiers rushing in and out of the house like they own it, and none of his friends, Karl, Daniel, or Martin. After living in the new house for a bit longer, Bruno and his sister, Gretel start schooling again, but are homeschooled this time. After one of his lessons, Bruno decides that he is bored with his house with no nooks and crannies to explore, so he decides to go outside and explore there. Instantly Bruno and the boy began talking. The boy's name was Shmuel. Shmuel was just about Bruno's age, but was much smaller and skinnier than Bruno, he had even asked Bruno for some food, but Bruno had not brought any. That day, Bruno and Shmuel had become friends. Ever since that day Bruno would walk daily after his lessons with Herr Liszt, until he could no longer see his home and until "the dot became a speck that became a blob that became a figure that became a boy". As they move into their new house, that has wire fence surrounding their property, Bruno has a feeling that something is up and feels unsafe. He looks out his room window and sees many kids and adults all wearing the same striped outfit on the other side of the fence. Without knowing his family moves into a residence near the concentration camp, Auschwitz.
He explored and found a fence that he thought it was a farm. He meets a boy called Shmuel. Bruno finds out that they were born on the same day, april 15th 1934. After a few months Shmuel appears to have a black eye and Bruno thought it was just a bully. It was really lieutenant Kotler who beats the Jews.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, is a coming of age story about Bruno, the son of a Nazi Commandant under Adolf Hitler. Bruno was initially very ignorant of what was happening in the world and was very immature about moving from Berlin. As the days went by, he got used to his new home and his thoughts were maturing, as he started thinking with logic and rationale. Bruno finally understands that he has to be a good person to everyone regardless what others might think. His character has strongly developed. Despite Bruno being unaware of his situation and his father being a Nazi, he matures from being childish and unsatisfied for moving to finally finding purpose in life by being a good human being.
