Someone once said, “A hero isn’t born, but made.” The Christopher award winning memoir The Boy on the Wooden Box by Leon Leyson talks about his and his family’s experience during the Holocaust. In this book, Leyson and his family travel from city to ghetto, to concentration camps, to Oskar Schindler, and finally, to freedom. Through this book, the readers learn that a hero is a human being doing a wonderful act either small or extraordinary.

Elie stays in Buchenwald after his father dies for a few months. SS officers removed thousands of prisoners everyday until the camps were empty. American tanks arrive in Buchenwald to free the jews. The free men stuff their bodies with food and Elie does the same, getting food poisoning.

Words, something we blindly hear, listen and feel. Humans do not think twice of the harm or good doing power they possess. In the novel, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, shows how words can give the characters such robustness during the war. As well as how strong they use their words so they can get out of difficult situations. Adolf Hitler, Max Vandenburg, and Liesel Meminger are characters that hold power throughout the novel in both positive and negative ways.

In the article “The Terrible Boy” written by Tom Junod Jonathan Miller was one of the world’s most terrible boys. In America’s eyes a terrible boy is cruel, hostile and merciless. In this article, Jonathan was painted by these descriptions. However, this wasn’t always the case. He wasn’t terrible when he moved to Georgia he just wanted to get kicked out of school, so he did whatever it took. Though in highschool he took on the description of a terrible boy. It all started on the bus when Jonathan threw a open ketchup packet at his rival Joshua Belluardo. They got off the bus and instead of a fight it was a crime scene.Jonathan murdered Joshua. Sadly, though Jonathan was a terrible he should have been shown mercy.

The book “This Boy’s Life” by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author’s childhood memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist. One of them is Dwight, the protagonist’s or Jack’s stepfather. This character seems to be one of the characters that inhibit Jack’s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack’s life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. Out of all homicide cases in the US, about one third of them end up unsolved. The unfortunate murder of 'The Boy In The Box' is no exception. The spine chilling case of 'The Boy In The Box' is about the devastating death of a little boy found in Philidelphia and no one knows who or what killed him. The mysterious death left many investigators baffled about who the boy was and how he died. Many people from different places developed their own theories to conclude his death, but like any other theories, there's always something that disproves them.

Some examples of this are that he copies what his friends do, he doesn't try to shape his own life, and he is heavily influenced by the male figures in his life.

“America’s Unknown Child” has been an unsolved and mysterious case for over 60 years of a young boy who was murdered and found inside of a cardboard box in the woods. Many detectives and investigators searched for any records and ran DNA analysis of the boy that could indicate who he was and where he came from. After over 60 years of conducted research and long investigations, there is only one possible solution to the tragic murder of this boy.

The Lost Boy, written by Dave Pelzer is a heartwarming story of a young nine-year-old boy, David, who has family issues and is constantly being abused by his mother. Dave Pelzer is a New York Times Bestseller and a #1 International Bestseller. He has written other books such as A Child Called “It”, My Story, and A Man Named Dave, etc. This is my first story read by this author however, I will read more of his work in the near future. The genre of this book I would say is self-help, psychology and inspirational because it sends out such a strong statement of what this young boy and probably many other children are dealing with, in other words, it helps raise awareness. A German boy in the time of Concentration Camps in WWII, Heinz was a homosexual who knew to conceal his secret. Heinz knew that he would be killed if anyone found out about his lifestyle, and told no one about his secret besides his mother. However, the Nazis eventually discovered a picture of Heinz with his lover, and sent him to a Concentration Camp to be killed. These individuals being forced to conceal their lifestyles is, in a way, forcing them to conceal who they truly are. Keeping secrets from others, in a way, means that they have not fully come to terms with who they are.

The main character, a young, German man named Peter Muller, was very traumatized by what the Nazi's and Gestapo (the terrorist political police of the Nazi regime founded by Hermann Göring, whose purpose was to persecute all political opponents of the Nazi regime) did to his father. Over the course of the movie, Peter went through a change; he saw his father in a new light, and realized what really mattered in the world around him. Peter's father was a violinist and professor at the university. He spoke out against the expulsion of the Jewish professors and the entire Nazi movement. Published first during the decade of the 1990s "The Boy Died in My Alley" remains a significant poem of Gwendolyn Brooks as she moves from traditional forms of poetry such as sonnets, ballads to the most unrestrictive free verse and includes the sad rhythm of the blues. This poem offers an amazing juxtaposition of dramatic poetic forms, narrative, and lyric (Guth & Rico). The story is most often simple but with the last line, they transcend the restriction of place and cover universal plight. Most often the characters of the people are memorable only due to fact that they are trying to survive the trials and tribulations of daily living. For example, in the poem, “The Boy Died in My Alley”, the author narrates an incident when a black boy is murdered in her back alley and the policeman asks her whether she has heard the shot. As she was passionate about the bad experiences of black community in the United States, her poetry is mainly about their plight in the society (Guth & Rico). The main focus of the poem, "The Boy Died in My Alley" is to study and analyze the reasons behind the violence that is associated with African-American children who live on the street.

About a boy, written in 1998 by Nick Hornby explores the themes of mental health, 1990's culture and family through the friendship of two characters; Will, a thirty-six-year-old bachelor and Marcus, A 12-year-old outcast. In about a boy, the author has used a range of aesthetic devices that shape character representation. An Aesthetic device is an element that authors intentionally use to create intellectual/emotional responses in their novel. This analytical essay will explore how Nick Hornby has used irony, point of view and stream of consciousness to shape character representation.
