Famine is a sad reality for many people across the world, forcing kids, pets, and adults to go hungry for days. In his memoir and movie The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, William Kamkwamba tells the story of how he saved his family and village from famine by persevering to build a windmill to help create energy for his village in Malawi. Both the movie and the book show his resilience through his actions and his work ethic. My first reason Willam showed perseverance was in his actions. One movie scene shows how he had to fight other people to get a little bit of grain for his family at the trading center. This shows how he had to persevere through the tough famine to just get a little bit of food for his family. This relates to my thesis in many ways. For …show more content…
Once the knot was fastened, he turned and walked away. When I followed, Khamba raised his head and began to whine. He knew I was leaving him. After a few steps down the trail, I made the enormous mistake of turning to look. His eyes were still on me. Then he laid down his head.” (Kamkwamba 125) This quote explains how he had to kill his dog. This relates to my thesis in many ways. It takes a lot of perseverance just to get through a family or pet's death, and to have to kill your own does show loads of perseverance. My second reason was his work ethic. On page 113 the book states, “ “Why aren’t you in school?’ He asked. “Didn't you get selected for Kachokolo?’ ‘No money. Today I dropped out.” (Kamkwamba 113) This quote explains a lot about the story. This quote talks about how he had to drop out of school because of his family's poorness. This quote relates to my thesis in many ways. For one, it shows how he had to learn most of the things to build his pinwheel out of school. In a later scene, the movie explains how Willam was sneaking into the school so he could further his
Reading about individuals struggling to survive is hard. Teaches one to be grateful for the little things. The book is full of emotions. Takes the reader on an emotional roller-coaster. I personally cried while reading about the tragic events that look place in the concentration camp. Going days without food nor water definitely wouldn’t be easy. Losing faith in your God would weaken your hope to fight for life. Staying physically, mentally and spiritually stable would be a fight in ones self. Living every day in fear would take a toll on your well being. Not knowing when it’s your turn to die nor what’s going to happen next is unsettling. I find Elie Wiesel strong for not giving up. He took care of himself and his father. Always put his father first when he was ill. He is brave for coming forward with his story and sharing these horrific events.
Wiesel had to overcome starvation, the mass murder and killing of the Jewish people, and the long and terrible death marches. These adversities made Elie Wiesel become the man he is today; he is truly a humanitarian.
William Kamkwamba, who was born in a place where hunger and drought were some of their biggest problems, was able to overcome these struggles and create an amazing life for himself and his family. William was a very innovative, intelligent and inspirational child growing up. He never let these issues get in his way or distract him from reaching his goals. He was always interested in science and he was devastated when he had to drop-out of school because of the famine in the area where he lived. Yet, even without going to school William continued to teach himself and create new inventions that ended up changing his life for the better.
This mans over confidents and arrogance is what lead too his own death in the first place. He was willing to kill a dog even though it was so loyal to this man "He would kill the dog and bury his hands in the warm body until feeling returned to them. Then he could build another fire." The man wasn't able to kill the dog because he wasn't able to rap his hands around its neck but the dog still cared for him in till it finally realized he had died already. He had finally realized and admitted that he was wrong but it was way to late to be sorry that he didn't listen to the old
Thesis: Education strongly influenced William’s development by giving him a taste of responsibility and by providing him with the inspiration for his experimentation which eventually led to the creation of his windmill.

William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer’s novel The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind incorperates multiple events where William opposes the will of the Majority. Living in William’s community has many insuperable obsticles. For example, growing food and recieving water is an extremely difficult task. Most of the villagers rely on others to grow their food for them, but William believes there is another option. William opposes the will of them majority by building a windmill despite other villagers and their criticism. Overall, this shows that those who oppose society can make a difference in their community.
William Kamkwamba shares his story of growing up in poverty and his fight against it during the TEDGlobal Talk in 2009. As a Malawian, a nation-wide famine in 2001 forced him to drop out of school. Determined to get an education, he began going to a library to learn from books. There, he finds the idea of building a windmill to pump water and generate electricity - a way of lifting his family out of poverty. Using scrap parts, he begins building his machine and attracts the attention of everyone around him, including reporters. As an engineer now, Kamkwamba wants to inspire other Africans to believe in themselves and follow their
“Someone’s parents have been singing entirely the wrong sort of song“ This is one of my favorite lines throughout this book. When I read this line, it practically overwhelms you with a sense of dread. You can feel how the story will unfold in front of you, and how intense the emotions will be. Not only is “The Name of the Wind” full of excitement, but also it gives the characters a depth and submerges the reader in them.
Racing into the Wind Minnesota, early May: The air is tranquil, fluffy clouds fill the sky, while people line the stands on this broiling, sluggish day. Horses, their tails waving to the crowd, bullet around the track. Suddenly, the heavens darken.
The main focus is placed on Will, whom has a rare genius to put together abstract math problems and finds it hard to relate to world without getting arrested for doing something violent and rebellious. He grew up in South Boston and the hard streets have jaded him, while his intelligence further isolated him from people and made him hostile to other people. In the beginning of the film, Will is discovered by Lambeu (Stellan Skarsgard) a professor of mathematics, and his well-being becomes a serious issue and he is pursued. While placing a difficult math problem on the chalkboard
Even though he was poor and was not like those who live in the plaster houses, he was grateful for everything he has. He appreciated his family, the food he was able to eat, and all the small aspects of life. This was all

The Way of the Wind by Amos Oz, is about a man named Shimshon Sheinbaum, and his view of his son, Gideon. Shimshon was a military, political, and social hero amongst his kibbutz. He is a founding father of the Hebrew Labor Movement. People in his kibbutz looked for him for guidance, because this man was in top physical and mental shape devoting all of his life to learning as much as necessary and the remainder to stay in peak shape. As one can imagine, he would expect the same of his son, and he does but his son isn't the same man as his father. His father didn't have someone else make a decision like that for him and he can't make that decision for Gideon. Shimshon, regardless how much he cared for his son, pushed him too far and had too
Kamkwamba was born in a family of relative poverty and relied primarily on farming to survive. According to his biography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, his father had been a rough fighting man who changed after discovering the Christian God. A crippling famine forced Kamkwamba to drop out of school, and he was not able to return to school because his family was unable to afford the tuition fees. In a desperate attempt to retain his education, Kamkwamba began to frequent the library. It was at the local library where Kamkwamba discovered his true love for electronics. Before, he had once set up a small business repairing his village's radios, but his work with the radios had been cheap.
