In Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, he is telling the story of a Dominican family but mainly about the son, Oscar de Leon. The book opens with the story of Oscar as a child and him having two girlfriends at the same time. The older people in town see him as a ladies man and encourage him. The boy and the two girls all break up and his life seemed to be on a steady decline since then. He grows up to become a nerdy, fat, and awkward adolescence with few friends and even less interest from girls. This phase persists throughout his life and he never develops out of the nerdy boy he was as a child. The Dominican Republic was a hostile and poor place during the time of the novel. It helps man and challenges the evil of the world. When Beli and Oscar see him they are both surrounded by the evil of the world and being naïve lead them there. The Mongoose is seen as the light of good in this time of tribulation for each of them and helps them to survive. The cane field gives the reader a better understanding of how the layout of the Dominican Republic and the power some of the people there possess. Cane fields are usually countless miles wide and packed tight with sugar cane. It is an ideal location to kill someone and get away with it. Beli is first taken here after her affair with the Gangster is discovered and her refusal to stop it leads to her beating. The Gangster’s wife is a powerful women who is related to Trujillo and is rumored to be more brutal than he is. This is proven here. She has Beli beaten and left in the field. The field is ideal because even if she survived the beating she would not be able to navigate her way out of the field and die that way. The only reason she lived was because of the golden mongoose. When Oscar is taken to the cane field he is beaten and left for dead when the mongoose appears again. He goes back home after the beating but returns again to try and get Ybon to love him. His endeavor is wasted and he is murdered by her boyfriend. These two incidents in the cane field mirror each other extremely close. They are both taken to the field to be beaten because
