People often rebel because they have something they feel is important to say and they want to be sure they are heard. Rebelling against the government is quite common; as people believe, the government is overusing its power or going against the constitution for personal gain. It does not come as a surprise that people rebel against the government and I believe this is “a fit subject for a mad house.” (Washington 2017) Rebellions often lead to people being hurt or killed. I have prevented stopped rebellions and have been through rebellions myself. The Bundy Standoff in Oregon is a rebellion in which a man went against the government with his intentions being to get the people to revolt against the government. (Brookhiser) The farmers that made whiskey were affected by this and began their own revolution challenging their government’s sovereignty by refusing to pay their taxes. (The Whiskey Rebellion)
There were multiple reasons that people decided to rebel against the government during. One cause of the rebellion was because debt collectors were trying to collect money that the people did not have. The money taken from the people was causing people to not be able to care for himself or herself or put money back to the community. Another reason for the rebellion was that they believe the money raised was going to the government for personal interest instead of going to the debt they owe to other countries. The next reason was that Habeas Corpus was suspended. Habeas Corpus was put in place to bring people accused of wrongdoing before a judge as a way give legal rights to the people. The suspension of Habeas Corpus caused what the people believed was “unjust punishment.” (Gray) The final reason for their rebellion was that Justices of the Peace, including Sheriffs and Deputies, were given unlimited power, which was used as a way to get revenge and show hatred. (Gray) Shay’s rebellion did open the eyes of many Politicians and they had worked the replace the constitution after. During this Rebellion, “the people engaged in civil disobedience, violence against the tax collectors and threatened to secede tram the new republic.” (The Whiskey
The action by the rebels in Shay’s Rebellion of stopping the judges from going into court was against law. The soldiers in the militia didn’t follow the law. The whole rebellion was against the law too. Eventually, the rebels in the Shay’s Rebellion were defeated. This was a warning for the people, reminding them do not have the thought of rebelling, or you will get defeated and maybe sentenced to death. During the Whiskey Rebellion, the farmers were angry about the whiskey tax policy, so they rebelled. Washington reacted by sending a trop of 13000 men to Pennsylvania and crashing down the revolt. It gave a warning to the people, that they should follow the law, but not ignored it or resisted against it. If they don’t, they would need to face the consequences of their action, such as a gigantic trop of 13000
(5) In Massachusetts, Daniel Shay led many farmers who were in debt to the courthouse to protest. Many of these farmers had fought in the war and when they came back they were in debt from all the taxes. This was later known as Shay’s Rebellion and since these farmers were in almost every state, state officials were afraid that this uprising would spread. Because of Shay’s Rebellion, the officials wanted to preclude further rebellion from occurring throughout the states. For if it did up rise, they knew their government would look even more unstable from other countries point of view. George Washington’s repartee was that their enemies would be happy to see that they were not able to govern themselves.
There were many rebellions in the United States history, some peaceful and some violent. Shays' Rebellion in 1786 and the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794 are examples of two brutal rebellions that led to death of many innocent people. Rebellions can develop due to many conditions including unfair laws, unfair treatment, and a disagreement over a sensitive topic. The Shays' Rebellion showed the Articles of Confederation was too weak, while the Whiskey Rebellion proved the Constitution to be a strong framework of government.
“With rebellion, awareness is born,” quoted by Albert Camus. An act of rebellion can cause awareness and open people's eyes to horrendous acts. In the book Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, when Montag realizes that the government wasn’t being fair, he decided he needed to make the society aware. Montag knew a rebellion was the only way to show that the government was not treating citizens right. It is acceptable to rebel when it is believed that the government is being unfair to their citizens because citizens should have the right to freely speak their opinions. People shouldn’t be told what they can or can’t-do for pleasure and they should be able to express their uniqueness.
In 1791, under the advisement of Alexander Hamilton, congress passed the whiskey tax. This tax, put a twenty-five percent tax on whiskey. Hamilton created this tax in hopes of the federal government gaining more money to help pay of the nation’s debt. However, in doing so, this angered many people, especially farmers in western Pennsylvania, because they distilled the extra grain they had to make whiskey and sell it to make extra income. These small operations in western Pennsylvania rebelled by erecting liberty poles and taring and feathering tax collectors. George Washington, who was president during this time, saw the outburst and decided to take action against the angered farmers. Washington gathered about 13,000 men from the militia to put an end to this rebellion. In doing so, Washington showed that the government help the power over the citizens. In The Whiskey Rebellion, by Thomas Slaughter, he describes different consequences that arise from the whiskey tax. Slaughter presents three main points, which include conflicts between the east and west, two political systems that begin to develop, and the actual rebellion.
(2A) The reason for partisan policies in the early republic were conflicts and compromises. The Shays’ Rebellion, 1786, as well as the Whiskey Rebellion, 1791, helped contribute to the United States of America’s first party system in the 1790s. Shays’ Rebellion was an armed uprising that took place around Springfield, Massachusetts led by Daniel Shays against alleged injustices against economic and civil rights. They believed that the reform was needed against aggressive tax and debt collection. The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax protest. It was the first tax implemented on a domestic product during the presidency of George Washington. It was to help raise revenue for the Revolutionary War debt. It taxed any
The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 helped bring about the demise of the aristocratic Federalist Government in favor of the democratic Republican Government, concerned with the needs of all of its citizens.
In 1786, Shay’s Rebellion had sparked due to the national governments policies that resulted from the post-war economic depression. Again, the national government failed to handle the situation effectively due to its lack of abilities. Fortunately, a group of merchants from Massachusetts was able to raise an army to put down the
The Whiskey Rebellion set a different tone in American politics following the American Revolution. It at times appeared to be a recreation of the American Revolution, yet differed in significant ways. It demonstrated that citizens of the United States would not allow their new government to become a clone of Britain when imposing and enforcing taxes. It also saw a federal government that took into consideration the citizens’ feelings of distrust toward the government. This slight consideration was not evident enough to American citizens, however, as they were still distrustful of the strong central government during and after the Whiskey Rebellion, a sentiment that had strong roots in the American Revolution.
The federal government met with the rebel leaders to avoid confrontation. The rebels unlawfully impeded the government’s right to levy excise taxes. If the government ignored the rebels, they would be forfeiting the Constitution to impose taxes and to make laws in general. The Whiskey rebels did not only act in opposition to the whiskey tax, “some of them were planning an insurgency against the government itself” (“Whiskey Rebellion” par.2). Neville Craig who resided in west Pennsylvania supported the government and claimed that he had “a strong suspicion that some at least of the leaders were not influenced by a mere desire to get rid of whiskey, some of them were perhaps secretly hostile to the existing form of government” (“Whiskey Rebellion” par.2). The people who supported the military believed that some of the rebels were conversing with Spain and Britain to have them join them after being separated from the Union. It was important for the government to take action to assert their authority and to stop the violence. Hamilton warned that, “a sacred respect for the constitutional law is the vital principle, the sustaining energy, of a free government” (“Whiskey Rebellion” par.3). The militia had to be called out in order to have the laws

The reasoning for the rebellion was that a lot of the farmers in our country, specifically those located in Massachusetts, had decided that they were not being treated fairly. Most everyone who joined on Shay’s side were poor farmers who could not afford to pay their taxes. Therefore, they were angered by their personal debts. These
Shay's Rebellion is a rebellion of farmers led by Daniel Shay because congress have raise tax which if the farmers didn't pay they will loose the farms. Daniel shay was vet who lost his farm due to high taxes. He led group of farmers on protest, disrupting court proceeding and other official governments business. It led a called for a stronger government.
The actions and members of Shay’s Rebellion would do almost anything to get what that wanted and that passion is what won us the Revolutionary. This is the reason why they had the right to do what they did. All of what they did started like this. Farmers were suffering because they could not sell their goods. This lead to them not being able to pay the money to help the Revolutionary war debts. Since farmers could not pay this money state officials took their land to pay for debts. Another thing that the state officials did was throw innocent farmers in jail because they could not pay the money. After this protests soon evolved and a Rebellion formed. Farmer thought the government was the same as what the King did. Farmers pleaded for new money
What would people rebel against and why do people rebel? Most people rebel because they are trying to fight for the rights of something that has been taken away. Or maybe given a rule and don’t want to follow that specific rule. This leads to many different conflicts with being a rebel.
