Central Lines are inserted for a number of clinical reasons including measurement of CVP, Administration of IV drugs, IV fluids, Blood Draw for difficult to stick patients and some times for nutritional reason (Administration of TPN). The main benefit of central line is for extremely sick people multiple drugs/treatments can be administered simultaneously. The major disadvantages of central lines, it can increase the risk of infection, pneumothorax, hemothorax, subclavian artery puncture, Catheter misplacement, air embolism, thrombosis and malfunctioning. The aim of this study is to discuss the methods adopted by hospitals to minimize the risk of central line infection with main emphasis on Altru’s policy guidelines critical assessment on maintenance and management of the central line.
Direct observation and study
When nurses do not follow the proper method of central line care, they create a potential risk for infection. The author used Altru hospital and observed the central line care in one unit, in one-shift especially during the busy hours. The author observed the staff performance of the central line care for one patient in isolation room. The observation was limited to dressing change and accessing needleless connector. Most of the nurses are in compliance with dressing change frequency, inspecting the integrity of the dressing, checking the needleless connector…
