Music may be a universal medium, but musician are far from all being treated equally. It has become nearly impossible to make it in the music industry, and those who do often will not succeed for very long. Yet, it is still an illusive field and one that society depends on for entertainment. By creating documentaries about musicians, viewers get a behind the scenes look at what being a musician truly entails, whether it is good or bad. For Ken Vandermark, his career as a musician is a struggle, as documented by Daniel Kraus’s Musician, because of his niche genre for contemporary society. Madonna, on the other hand, has created a career as a pop icon, as documented by Alek Keshishian’s Madonna: Truth or Dare, which may be financially successful, but is not always rewarding. Both Kraus and Keshishian employ similar tactics for their respective documentaries; however, through the use of different camera angles, relations to the subject, and display of live music, they are able to provide unique insight into the artists they are following. Throughout Musician, Kraus uses multiple camera angles in order to develop the narrative of the documentary. His two most frequently used, extreme close ups and wide angle, are both frequently found throughout the film to create poignant moments in the film. Extreme close ups are most commonly used while Vandermark is performing, allowing viewers to see his unwavering focus and passion for his work. From the very beginning of the film,
Andra Day views musician as “revolutionaries” as they address the problems of the society in a broader and larger platform which reaches out
From the day we’re in our mother's stomachs, to the day we die, we have always been listening to music. For me, listening to music all my life helped me develop a passion for it. When I was around the age of 6 my dad introduced me into the world of Rock. The very first band I remember listening to was System of a Down and ever since then, I fell in love with rock music and all its possible variations; for a long time this was all I listened to. It wasn’t until high school that I started listening to all sorts of genres and realized that I wanted to have a career in the music industry. That's when I learned about producing music.
Another rhetorical device the documentarian tends to use is pathos, directed towards his viewers who cannot help sympathize with the teenagers trying to escape the heartbreak most troubled artists face. He starts the documentary by presenting to us the young, shy Wisconsin girl who wanted to make a life for herself in the music business. Having to split her family to create this dream, she moves to LA and begins her journey through LACHSA. During her senior year, she begins to try to experience the music dream she has always desired by performing outside at the school, but due to the her absence from school to “fulfill” her dream, she jeopardizes her acceptance into college.
The first talk featured Miki Kaneda and focused on the manner in which the idea of prestige is entrusted in the current time period. The argument was that though prestige can still be gained through traditional institutions, such as conservatories and companies, new music and its practices broadens accessibility to prestige. The multi-media, multi-genre, and collaborative elements present in the performance practices of those involved in the New Music scene, such as WetInk of New York, demonstrates how successful this new model of prestige can be in reaching new audiences and of maintaining financial sustainability in a market environment.

Music has become such an important part of people’s lives today. One cannot walk down the street without seeing earbuds in a person’s ears or hearing the bass to a radio in someone’s car. But how did music become such an important and constant part of the lives of so many? What do artists have to go through to reach their audience? At the beginning of musical development from the medieval Georgian chant to the arias of Mozart and fugues of Beethoven, people could only listen to music in a live setting. This is how most performers would make their money. According
I am currently studying Music at Central Michigan University because I came to college with the intent of becoming a music director or teacher. I am now planning on completing my minor in music and am considering a major in communication disorders while continuing my study in German. I am very interested in language and how it works and I want to help people in my future career. I am currently discovering what sorts of careers I can have with a major in communication disorders but I am very interested in becoming a speech therapist. Learning German has also been a big part of my life. I am currently enrolled in the highest German Language class here at CMU and curious to see where that could take me with my career.
USC's Jazz Studies program is one where I can see myself grow as both a person and a musician. Through research on the Jazz Studies program at USC, I have concluded that the program would be beneficial to me, for it offers many opportunities to grow as an artist. Working with some of the best musicians in the world and getting to meet many talented students with interesting backgrounds would be a very rewarding experience for me. USC's campus and its resources's accessibility would furthermore help me to excel in all aspects of becoming a professional musician. Thus, I plan to pursue the best and the most of my musical career by working with the professors and students of USC and getting involved in many musical groups and activities as possible.
Today we face many problems in society such as school shootings and social issues that affect everyone who is exposed to the real world. Kids are being corrupted at a young age, and since as a whole we cannot come up with answers, we immediately point fingers at the music industry. However, the world does not see what these artists try to do in order to mold the minds of the young to make them better and overcome adversity to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Nothing is more enjoyable than listening to your favorite song. All over the world, people listen to music on a daily basis. Music plays a major part in a tremendous number of people’s lives. While they are enjoying the music, they do not think about how the song came about. Music is not just the sound you hear or the voices in the background. People do not think about what is behind the scenes of where music comes from. Before the song is completed, someone has to make it happen. In music, there are different careers which are the song writer, the manager, the marketing executive, and the produced. Each of these careers play a huge role in how music is brought to the public.

Successful strategies are based on several common elements, such as: 1)Simple, consistent long-term goals 2)Profound understanding of the competitive environment, 3)Objective appraisal of resources, and 4)Effective implementation (Grant, 2010). As our case study shows, Madonna has had a firm grasp on these elements. Her long-term goal to be the greatest female performer is very simplistic and long term. Her understanding of the competitive environment is exceptional, throughout the years she understood exactly the direction that music was taking. In the 1980's she understood that dance clubs and DJ's were the future and if she wanted to break into the industry she needed to start there. In the late 1980's and into the 1990's she utilized sex and seduction to keep in public's eye. By the late 2000's she understood that music was going away from the recorded format and the money to made was in live performances. Madonna has understood throughout the years that as the industry was constantly changing that she would need to as well to stay relevant. She has been successful at promoting her strengths, while shadowing her weaknesses. Madonna has developed her image throughout the years to
