According to Earl Warren “ The police must obey the law while enforcing the law.” Which means that the police have a strict policy they need to follow to not get in trouble themselves. The career of a police officer is dangerously attractive, because of the adrenaline rush you get when you are faced with danger. Also the unknown challenges you can face that change from day to day. The research will describe the career of a police officer, what is required to become a successful police officer and the impact that police officers have on society. The development of policing of today in the United States, closely followed the development of policing in England. In the early colonies, policing took two forms. It was both informal and communal, which was referred to as the “Watch”. Then the private-for-profit policing which was called “The Big Stick”. The Watch system was composed of community volunteers Whose primary duty was to warn of impending danger. Boston created a night watch in 1636, New York in 1658 and Philadelphia in 1700. The night watch was not a particularly effective crime control device. Watch men often slept or drank on duty. While the Watch was theoretically voluntary, many “volunteers” were simply attempting to evade military service. They were conscript forced into service by their town, or were performing watch duties as a form of punishment. Which means that the Watch system that was created at that time was not very effective. Policing in the United States copied closely to that of England’s in which they used volunteers as a “watch”. Boston was the first to adopt this method and in doing so other cities had followed, New York in 1658, and Philadelphia in the 1700’s. These volunteers were usually drinking or sleeping during their shifts so they were not very effective. These Volunteers that were a part of the watch only volunteered so they could attempt to evade military services. They were also made up of constables, which are, a peace officer that has limited police authority and they usually operate in a small town or city.

Law enforcement continued to develop as cities and towns relied on bailiffs, or “watchmen.” Bailiffs maintained a night watch to detect fires and spot thieves. However, the bailiffs were still too few in numbers to handle most emergencies, but they could wake up a sleeping population to assist. Larger cities continued to expand night watch into day wards. Finally, in 1285 the Statute of Winchester codified British practices. The statute officially created the watch and wards, mandated the draft of eligible men to serve, criminalized citizens disregarding another citizen’s outcry, and required citizens to maintain weapons in their homes.

Everyone feels a sense of comfort when they know they are safe.
The dictionary definition of the police is “the organized civil force of a state, concerned with maintenance of law and order, the detection and prevention of crime, etc,” (Collins English Dictionary, 2002). This definition states the minimum of what the police actually do. Providing support for families, protecting society from criminals and responding to calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week are just some of the other roles that police have to deal with. In this essay the evolution of the police will be discussed as well as how the police are facing challenges.
Police officers are responsible for protecting people and property. Related job titles include Sheriffs and sheriffs deputy, detectives, and state police officers. However all of these job titles have similar duties for example they are all responsible for the protection of people and property. These job titles might be very similar but they do differ in many ways. Police officers patrol the city issuing citations keeping the peace and conduct traffic stops. Sheriff 's and deputies hold practically the same duties as police officers but do so for the entire county. A state police officer could also be addressed as a state trooper. These officers usually patrol highways and issue citations and are frequently called for comprehensive law enforcement services. Detective is the title that differs from the others the most. Detectives aren 't in uniform. They investigate crime scenes and find evidence for criminal cases. Detectives conduct interviews, observe activities of suspects, and also participate in raids. Although a normal police officer does not earn as much income as related titles it is still a very demanding and dangerous job.
