The Case Against Homework: How Much is Too Much Homework

When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run. Some teachers have more of a workload than others so even if you are in the same grade and same level class some may give more work than others which seems unfair. At one high school some students in grade 12 reported doing up to 5 hours of homework a night (4) (Rumbelow,1). But at another high school they only had to do 3 hours of homework each weeknight. So each student has an unhealthy amount of homework but some have more than others. Too much homework can also hinder the learning process because you brain will be too overloaded with information and you will not be able to remember anything on the Tests. Also, at one high school the research said that when students graduate grade 12 a high percentage of them want to take at least one year off before they go to college because of the homework load that they had to do throughout their high school years(Rumbelow,3). Some kids have to do 5 hours of homework each night to get into an ivy league school, others only have to do only 3 hours of homework each night to get into ivy league schools.
Homework is overall not helping kids with their health. When doing homework you are sitting inside at your kitchen table. So if you have multiple hours of homework each night when do kids have time to exercise. As obesity is growing you have to wonder if doing homework and forcing kids to stay inside is causing kids to become
