The beauty of life often times comes with adversity. The challenge becomes one of which determines if the individual makes the predicament strengthen them or destroy them. In the case of Dr. Moorer, he received his biggest lessons in life from his failures. I believe the chapter Off Track offered the biggest lessons in life in the sense it made Dr. Moorer reflect and learn from his failures. It was in this stage that altered the course of his life for the better. One instance that demonstrates Dr. Moorer journey with adversity is his dismissal from General Motors Institute or (GMI). During his second semester at university, Dr. Moorer failed engineering graphics. He thought to himself, “If you can’t pass engineering graphics, then how will you ever become an engineer?” (Moorer 34). Doubt clouded his mind coupled with growing despair. The burden of living up to other people’s expectation coupled with self-doubt only drained his focus more. During such difficult times, it’s important to have faith. Faith in not only in God, but in yourself and for the future. Dr. Moorer lost faith altogether; resulting in his failing marks. Fortunately for Dr. Moorer, he regained his confidence in time to bounce back from his shortcomings. The importance of having faith in such difficult times is important because it fosters a sense of commitment to the dream. Without having faith or hope, failure becomes an inevitability and exposes the individuals lack of tenacity to pursue their
When people are struck with hardships in life, the way they react reveals their true character. Having a certain mindset can greatly influence how they handle problems, differentiating one person from another. Many can feel discouraged and feel like giving up when they hit a rough patch. In other cases, the will to be in a position better than where they are at the moment gives them the motivation to succeed. Adversity can have a positive effect on the development of an individual's character, providing them with the drive to overcome their current situation.
Making it through hard times is challenging but worth it at the end. “Put your heart, mind, and soul into even your smallest acts. This is the secret to success.” - Swami Sivananda
Each chapter has a different theme to teach the reader. Every chapter ends with a paragraph stating the lesson of the chapter. Although there were so many lessons, there was a few that stood out to me and were repeated a few times. One of the major themes of the book is that even if you are faced with a setback in life, whether it is an injury, grades, or a life or death situation, you have to fight through it and always think positively. If you think positively, take your time, and not rush the situation, you will eventually get through it. Another theme is that if you want to be the best at something, it takes hard work and dedication. When you want to be good at something you can just all of a sudden be good at it, you have to set goals and work for it. You have to set one goal, reach that, and make another goal to reach. Eventually, with dedication, you will make it to where you want to
Throughout the memoir, Moore portrays the value of education and how small judgments can shape one's life forever. Moore wanted the reader to know the value of having an education and how the choices you make from your childhood stick with you forever. A great example that Moore mentioned
The Roman poet Horace states that “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” By this, he explains the role these hardships play in shaping and developing a person’s character. I agree that adversity not only elicits talents, but also brings out the hidden aptitudes within a person that which they were unaware of before. Through learning experiences and observations, I have witnessed the significant outcomes that come from the result of adversities.
Sometimes in life, situations may knock you down to a breaking point of giving up. These situations can make you or break you; but whatever you chose the choice is yours. Challenging circumstances can make you feel as if the world is caving in on you. Moreover, you must learn to push through your trials and tribulations and get back up again. Life never said it would be easy, or challenging. You must continue to keep dreaming, and keep that hope alive within your heart, and strive to become a stronger solider for the next mountain that may come against you. In life, we will not always see good days. However, your good days should outweigh your bad days. As long as you have breath in your body, you will always win the battle that’s ahead of you. The story of Lolo Jones exemplifies this breaking point, and the discouragement she experienced to doubt her dreams.
Hardships have the power to make a break a person, as Roman poet, Horace, once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Everyone has or will have to face adversity at some point in their lives, it is a universal truth. Although misfortunes usually have a negative connotation, depending on the struggle and how one deals with it, it is likely the person will come out of misfortune better prepared for the world. Contrastly, if a person never experienced any hardships, they would lack a sophisticated understanding of the world and lack the ability to handle difficult situations. Adversity gives people strength they can not obtain with success.
Failure is perhaps one of the most influential things in people’s lives because it can alter the course of our actions, by teaching us persistence or leading us the opposite way. Through his book, Dr. Cleamon Moorer guides the readers through an intimate journey about his progression from failure to promise. In the small town of Detroit, Moorer was raised by Christian parents, who taught him love, obedience, and enforced discipline, but most importantly, they nurtured his faith in Jesus Christ. Cleamon Moorer flourished in academics during both elementary and middle school, however, his mischievousness throughout those years earned him many disciplinary sessions. In high school, misbehavior became history, yet, his GPA suffered in the low C’s. But with his father’s tough discipline and Moore’s own effort and faith in God, he later received candidacy for the National Honor’s Society. As his college experience began, Cleamon Moore was honored to attend GMI and work along many of his classmates at GM, but when the courses became more difficult after each semester, his grades fell below the required minimum, hence, he became a “flunk-out”. Yet, he did not abandon his education; he never gave in to failure, in fact, he leaned from it. Then, with years of tenacity, patience, and faith, he ultimately became a professor at the same university at which he had failed.
Adversity is a difficulty or misfortune. Although adversity is challenging to the individual it affects, it is up to a person how they chose to deal with that difficulty. When faced with adversity, an individual has two choices; embrace his or her problems and live life to the fullest despite challenges, or carry his or her difficulties as a burden hindering the overall quality of life. Roman Poet, Horace, said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” He is expressing the idea that not only can adversity be dealt with and embraced, but it even brings out talents in people that would not have shone through if they were not met with challenges.
Adversity can be seen in many different ways. Some people look at adversity as a learning experience, while others view adversity as a situation marked with misfortune. When a person is faced with adversity, rather than viewing it as something to hate, they should see it as a opportunity to grow. In the stories by Doris Lessing, W.D Wetherell and Alice Walker, they all show different types of challenges each character had to over come and their journey to do so. These stories all shared similar outcomes, they demonstrate how each character used an obstacle they were faced with, and turned it into a beneficial experience and how it shaped them into the person they are today.

My response to the professor from Oregon Coast University would be to fairly and accurately relay all pertinent information related to Dr. Candler’s tenure, performance, contributions and shortcomings. In addition, I could not, in good conscious, recommend Dr. Candler for the open position at Oregon Coast University. It would be inappropriate to not offer full disclosure related to Dr. Candler in order to pass along Mountain State University’s problem to another university. In response to Dr. Candler’s teaching performance, I would balance any positive areas of Dr. Candler’s contributions with equal emphasis on shortcomings to include fellow trusted professor observation as well as a fair evaluation of student feedback in explaining my response
In my opinion as my voice I believe Mr Leackler was a family man .A man who stays with his wife and respect the lady as his wife is considers a family man regardless of how hash he may be. On the other hand he was not as principled person as the author would think, the things he did to Josh were unheard of, that is a white native educating a slave, but this was with an intention to benefit himself latter on by getting better job service from Josh. Mr Leackler is also a polite man the fact that he allowed Josh to dictate his pay the time he was being hired out.The article is during the slavery time when slaves were treated as if they were no human . It is also at this period that slaves were seen as illiterate people who could not understand
Dr. Shreffler is staying at the non-conference hotel which is lower in cost even with her request for a rental car. The car is needed because transportation from her hotel to the event conference is $95.40 one-way for $95.60 for 6 days. Thus, the round-trip for 6 days is $41,144.80 so a rental car is the most advantageous method of
Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However, one should not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. Failure in the beginning can often be a powerful incentive to reassess one’s position in wanting to achieve the particular aims; to analyse whether the purpose is worth the trouble the person has to undergo and the whether the obstacles are surmountable.
