Benidalys Rivera is one of seven women to give birth while in the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center in 2013. In 2013, Benidalys was convicted to serve two and a half years in Chicopee jail for trafficking cocaine. She started to have contractions in her cell, late in the evening. Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz was a woman far beyond her years. Living in a time when society was dominated by men, she disregarded the fact that women during this time were forced to be uncurious objects, whose highest achievement in life was to give birth. Her relentless pursuit to attain knowledge and defy her culture's standards for women is illustrated throughout her writings. In the readings, ("Response to the Most Illustrious Poetess Sor Filotes de la Cruz, the three "Romances" and the "Redondillas"), she spills out her beliefs, feelings and pain in forms of symbolic devices and irony in attempt to erase the differences between men and women as intellectual beings, as well as to argue for a woman's right to pursue
One of the most remarkable stories is the one of John Norman. He was a deputy chief of the New York City fire department. He was asleep whenever the first tower of the World Trade Center was hit. He had turned off the ringer on his phone because he was on vacation from work. His plan that day was to sleep in. He was completely unaware of what was going on outside. Then his answering machine got an "all call" message from the department. Still he didn't know what fully was going on so he turned on the television. He said, “As I’m just about to turn off the TV and head for the door, the south tower collapses. I thought it was a bomb." It took him and hour and a half just to get to the city and where he needed to be. He was put in shock whenever
What kind of rulers will Miranda and Ferdinand be once they return to Milan and take over the land? Based on the relationships with their fathers as well as the experiences and perceptions of the world around them one would be lead to believe Ferdinand and Miranda would be kind and just as rulers, but also weak due to the lack of exposure to the real world. Characteristics and traits of both Ferdinand and Miranda demonstrate the great love and passion they have for others. The same characteristics also show their weaknesses, which makes them vulnerable to those who wish to overthrow them. Miranda and Ferdinand were both brought up and treated as royalty in a sense, leaving them to be sheltered from the real world around them.
Sandro Botticelli painted La Primavera between 1477 and 1482 for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, a member of the powerful Florentine family. While many Renaissance works depicted scenes of Christianity, this work as well as the others in its group – The Birth of Venus, for example - are focused around tales from classical mythology. Designed to hang in a private room, the painting did not need to be made accessible to large audiences like other works of the time, such as the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. An educated family with strong Humanistic ties, the Medici would have had the necessary knowledge to interpret the painting’s subject, while the common people would not have. Now located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence,
