The final situation I have had concerning unclear boundaries involved me and a professor. This individual was someone I had grown to know and respect and took several courses under. The incident occurred after I had graduated from Western Carolina University with my bachelor’s degrees while I was living in Cullowhee over the summer. I was invited to the professor’s house along with another former student to eat dinner with him and his wife. While we were eating the meal, the professor gave me and the other student a glass of wine to go with dinner. Even though I was of legal drinking age and was no longer a student of the professor’s, it felt strange to have a professor provide me alcohol.
Also, I felt uncomfortable being in the professor’s home since it was the first time I had socialized with a professor outside of a school environment. I later discussed the event with the other student to inquire if the situation also made her uncomfortable. The individual disclosed that she did not feel uncomfortable since this was not her first time having dinner with the professor and his wife. I did not talk about how this incident made me feel with my professor. The reason the boundaries were unclear in this situation was that there was a multiple relationship. I was now the professor’s former student as well as an individual who had a social relationship with the professor.
Unlike the two previous examples, I was not the individual with a position of power. Since the second person
There has always been a big controversy on the legal drinking age and what it should be. The consumption of alcohol can be seen has dangerous or has a medicine. The legal drinking age should be raised due to violent crime, domestic abuse, and DUI all related to abusing alcohol. Raising the legal drinking age will decrease the amount of violent crime, domestic abuse, and DUI related deaths.
What do you think the legal drinking age should be? For years the question, “What should be the legal drinking age,” has been in the air. Many people have been arguing whether or not the legal age to drink should be raised, stay the same, or lowered. Save Us from Youth talks about how there is not a consistency of laws for an eighteen-year-old. As a young adult you are given many rights to be certified as an adult, yet are held back as youth because drinking is prohibited. Different appeals to logic and red herring are used in Save Us from Youth, to give the authors view on consistency of laws and being an adult.
My behavior that night disrupted the floor and probably some students studying, I should have never surprised my guest out in the hallway. Although many of my floor mates were in the lounge playing with our RA. Other students could have been sleeping or trying to have quiet time. This could have affected peoples’ sleep and caused many headaches. I indirectly disrespected my floor mates because my friend yelled at my RA. My friend yelled at my RA, but no time in that exchange did she curse at her or anyone else on the floor.
You know an issue has evoked large levels of community discussion when interest groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving and rappers like J-kwon are telling us the same thing: teen drinking is very bad. But discussion on the topic tends to vary far more than that. Congress discussed the issue in 1984, with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act: an act that withheld federal highway funding from states without a minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) of 21. The motives behind the act can’t be summed up in just residual American puritan values; it wasn’t aiming to ruin teenaged fun, but reduce deaths by drunk drivers and cut down on alcohol dependence and abuse. It’s been over 30
In the United States of America, there is a minimum drinking age of 21. The legal drinking age legally specifies the youngest age in which a person is allowed to consume and purchase alcoholic beverages. From country to country, there are varying ages of legal drinking ages. There is much debate in the United States on whether the legal drinking age should be lowered to eighteen from twenty one, or should remain the same. People in favor of lowering the drinking age propose that since eighteen is characterized as being an adult (legally and socially), one of the rights that should come along with that is drinking alcohol. Also, that if we were to lower the drinking age, less young adults would be
In the United States the legal drinking age is 21 years old, while quite drastically all over the world the drinking ages in many countries are 18. If these countries have lower drinking ages and statistically better education scores and crime rates it could be beneficial for the government to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18, or it may be detrimental to the society.
This paper explores the debate over whether the drinking age should be lowered or raised in the United States. Multiple different sources are provided, each offering a different opinion. The article discusses the ethical, pathological, and emotional effects if the drinking age were to be lowered or raised. If the drinking age were to change, how would society react to this change and what would be the long term effects. Drinking has always caused negative effects, yet how would changing the age effect personal struggles. The sources describe different perspectives to each side, most wanting the age to lower, yet another source contradicts the debate on to lowering the age, and describes how the age works. The articles from Tracy (2008), Cloud (2014), and Engs (1998) all support the idea of lowering the age, yet Nagin (2012) opposes the idea of the lowering the age. All four sources and studies are essential to have a complete understanding of the topic.
I would like to change the legal drinking age in Canada from nineteen to twenty one because it is beneficial to society to restrict alcohol to younger people. At nineteen, the body not likely fully developed, therefore alcohol would delay or hinder development, likely sacrificing an opportunity at a successful life. Being exposed to alcohol at a young age may also cause further addiction in the future, and a life comprised of heavy alcoholism is detrimental and harmful. At twenty one, the body is already fully developed, and many people have likely matured, realizing the potential difficulties that come with consuming alcohol. Leaving the legal drinking age as it is would be a complication for future generations, and restrict many young and
I have forgotten the incident Felt furious when I came to know of it. Later, reconciled.
College life is filled with changes. It is filled with many new experiences. As college students, we are on our own, adults. As adults we are responsible for keeping up to date on information that affects us. One issue that affects college students nation wide is drinking. The current legal drinking age in the United States is twenty-one years of age. The Federal government raised the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 in 1984. Even with the current drinking age at twenty-one, many people under that age choose to drink anyway. In fact, a government survey from 1996 showed that 56% of high school seniors reported drinking in the last 30 days (Hanson). With so many underage drinkers, many people
In early December, the accounting team were scheduled to have a luncheon at Ibby's. Two days prior to the event, a calendar invite had been sent to its attendants. Due to my shy nature, I had not accepted the invitation, but unbeknownst to me, the attendance was required because, as the time approached, Mr. Rackers asked me to prepare to leave with them. In candor, I was not comfortable with nor interested in having lunch in such a setting, and worse, my co-worker, Mr. Whittaker was battling a severe cold that I was trying not to contract during this event.
After the graduation ceremony, the school organized an event for students to attend instead of going to a party and drinking. It was named project graduation, we all met back at the school at 10 pm and took the buses to an arcade place. I went with a group of friends I was close with in high school. At first, it was fun playing games, and riding rides, refreshments, and food were provided too. When my best friend Cristina, Jimmy and I were outside on line for a ride, another friend of mine Casey asked: “Can I ride with you guys”. I said ok and right away my snobby friend Cristina said: “there is no room”. Clearly there was room for the four of us, I am the type of person that treats everyone, equally uncool or not. I did not like how Cristina treated her, so I walked away with my other friend. A persons’ character determines his or her traits for us to be good people. I am a compassionate, responsible, and caring person. This became an ethical dilemma because I felt I needed to make a choice, stay best friends with Cristina or ignore my other friend and hurt her feelings. I believe all people should treat other how they would want to be treated by doing right by God.In the end, Cristina and I stopped being friends because treating people kindly and fairly is very important to my
Around 11:00 p.m., on the night of May 11, 2016 some friends invited me to their dorm room to hang out. When I arrived, they were drinking, so I decided to have a drink also. After hanging out for a while, I returned to my dorm room, but decided to leave again once I learned through social media that another friend was hanging out in a nearby room. I decided to go by just to speak since this was the last night of the semester, and
I spent a recent evening watching a movie with my erstwhile girlfriend Jaimie, along with two of our mutually close friends, Jason and Michael. In the half hour before starting the video, we rearranged Jaimie's furniture to make room for the four of us. During the screening, we laughed together at a child's antics, made jokes about trite and improbable situations, and watched silently as the story drew to an emotional climax. As the credit scroll began, it was clear that I was both welcome and expected to stay in the room in a casual social gathering with the other three. However, my response was to mumble something about having to leave, and, retreating to
One particular day I had to show a condo off to a new client, he was from Ohio and had only been to New York one time. He had recently gotten a job at a major investment firm and needed a place fast. We had spoke online a few times, and he looked sexy from what I could see, so I made sure to dress in something that would grab his attention. I wore my tightest red skirt with red high heels, a tight blouse and a blazer so I 'd look professional. My boss had a strict "no dating clients" policy for our office, but flirting wasn’t dating. I just enjoyed the attention, and it helped get business. My client, Andrew, was a nice guy and the conversations we had previously were pleasant. This day we 'd meet in person for the time. He looked like your everyday, attractive mid-westerner. He had blue eyes that looked like they had come out of a precious stone.I was
