Feeling like school has no purpose is normal. Students wake up at the break of dawn just to catch the bus , and stay up to the late hours of the night studying for the big test the next day.All for the ultimate goal, college. That recurring question still floats around ; Is college necessary? Laborious jobs such as : working in an auto shop, plumbers , construction workers , even being a fry cook, only requires a high-school education. Employers administer a test to see if the future employee can : read, write, spell, count, and do basic math. All things students learn from elementary school to high school.
Such workers go through an arduous amount of work. “Such sacrifice does indeed occur-the hazards faced by a lineman restoring power during a storm come to mind’’ says Crawford in ‘’ The Case of Working with Your Hands’’. Crawford said that to show the work a simple electrician does is dangerous, he doesn’t even factor the fact of other types works. Crawford also says ‘’ WIthout the opportunity to learn through hands , the world abstract and the passion for learning will not be engaged’’. After that statement he goes on to give another profound statement’’If

The freedom to choose a students own career path and not have such restraints against where students go and what students have to do. Of course there are the usual school related rules, but not for courses. Studies start to ask what do liberal arts schools have little to do with ‘’harsh realities’’. Roth says ‘’Post secondary education should help students to discover what they love to do,to get better at it, and to develop the ability to continue learning so that they become agents of change- not victims of it’’ (‘’What’s a Liberal Arts Education Good For’’)this says that a liberal college doesn't help anything , that it makes it worse. Roths whole article states that liberal arts college is a colege of freedom. Its does not prepare their students for the real
In 2009, by publishing "The Case for Working with Your Hands", Matthew B. Crawford highlighted the importance of an undervalued job: trades. Workers, who require hands on work, confront many challenges that outsiders may not see.
‘The Case for Working with Your Hands’ By Matthew B. Crawford In the book ‘The Case for Working with Your Hands’, Matthew Crawford talks about the topic of learning more trade skills rather than more white collar skills that a lot of us including myself feel we need to know to get a job. He explains his story of he had finished his Ph.D. and was now stuck with a state of professional panic. (Paragraph 9, p44)
Many people believe that after high school it’s not necessary to attend college. But in my opinion, I think that college is necessary. Some people with only a high school diploma tend to struggle to find a good job. But with a college degree, there is a higher chance of finding a better job. There are many colleges that offer degrees and programs that last two
Why is it that in today’s society, people merely believe that a person can be successful if they have a degree from a higher education? In the article “The Case for Working With Your Hands” author Mathew B. Crawford talks about his life as a mechanic and the decisions and revelations that got him there. Crawford claims that a good job is defined to meet an individual’s passion and to see the “effects of the world” (Crawford). Crawford is saying that a person does not have to have a degree to have a good job. With Crawford’s claim, in the article titled “The Case for Working With Your Hands,” that a person should find a job that satisfies their own passions and desires I would agree with the author’s stance based on my own personal experiences as well as his information he presents.
During my training here in Northbrook College, I’ve learned that employers must provide a workplace where workers are not exposed to hazards in their workplace so they should provide adequate information to their employees regarding safety in manual handling by providing them trainings and supervision to workers so they can work in a safe manner. It is also taught that it is better if manual handling is done in collaborative approach where two or more people are involved in the procedure to reduce the risk of injury and make the load lighter as well. Some equipments like the hoist, turning blanket, wheelchair and the like are helpful to lessen the load and make things or person lighter and easier to carry, lift, and transfer
Education has always been an important part of our sustainable society in which everyone plays a role. The purpose of the education system is to provide a way for students to learn and gain knowledge. The current education system focuses more on evaluations rather than teaching, which creates a stressful and unpleasant high school experience. Alfie Kohn’s essay, How Not to Get into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation describes the difficulties and purposeless school practices students face when preparing themselves for life beyond high school.
In this article “The Case for Working With Your Hands” written by Matthew B. Crawford, it states that “manual labor” has been replaced in this day and age of advancement within our society. Whether this is due to technology replacing jobs or schools preparing students for an office based kind of job in the future, it’s evident that work in physical labor has become more obsolete as of late. Consequently, this leads to individuals working in fields that they presume will be successful in the future instead of working in jobs that they will find interesting. However, I agree that working in manual labor would help create the ability to fix things on your own and an overall feeling of being rewarded with every task you complete.
Patrick Awuah, the founder of Ashesi University, explains that the purpose of a liberal arts college is to educate free men and woman to become leaders. Ashei was the first non-profit liberal arts college in West Africa. Patrick saw the need for a liberal arts education because he felt that the current leaders of Africa did not have the creative thinking skills necessary to fix the problems threatening Africa. He believed that a liberal arts education teaches students how to confront complex problems and create new and important ideas. The key trait of a liberal arts education is that it teaches students how to think creatively and allows them space to develop their own thinking skills, it creates a good balance between societal and scientific knowledge. -new sentence/rephrase

Liberal education- its relevancy and practicality- is a relevant topic; it is especially relevant in a day and age where college is not a leisure but a necessity. In his book Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters (Yale University Press), Michael S. Roth argues, his pointedly biased opinion, on the importance of a liberal arts education. To Roth, a liberal education is an education that immerses the student in vast knowledge of a variety of humanity subjects. As the president of Wesleyan University, Roth full heartedly believes in a liberal education, and supports his argument by referring to famous thinkers since the establishment of the United States; however, Roth includes drawbacks to
I believe, that school could possibly be one of the caves in our youth's lives. We are all required to go by government laws in order to get a career and to support ourselves as well as our family members. We all progress together with the same educational material given to us by federal people who deem it suitable. We cannot choose classes that we think would help us in our future careers in place of other ones we do not think will help. For example, I a high schooler, am required to take three years of math.
The first part of a liberal arts education that stood out to me, was having general education requirements. An important part of developing as a person for me is to increase my knowledge and intelligence as much as I can and in as many different areas as I can. A liberal arts education helps me achieve this goal of widening my horizons. By having general education requirements, I can explore different curriculum like religion or social sciences. By doing this I am broadening my knowledge on topics I am never learned about before. As well as doing that, I also can find out which new topics I enjoy. As a freshman, I am unsure of where I want to end up in life and what I want to major in, but by having access to a liberal arts education, I have an opportunity to see what new subjects I am passionate about. This semester I took Introduction to Sociology and I found out this is a subject I really enjoy. If I was not required to
School. Its something we are stuck with for the first 18 years of our life but then we are faced with a choice. A choice so important that if we say yes or no our lives will be changed for better or for worse. That choice we are faced with is college. If we do go to college we can get better jobs that require a college degree for you to even have a chance of getting said job. But here is the thing most of us want when we finish or drop out of high school. We might say that we will take a year break before we go to college. That year turns into 2, 2 turns into 4, 4 turns into 8 and so on and so forth until we regret never going to college. Believe it or not college can be fun. If you take programming you will get to make video games and mess
When I was in elementary school I always had the thought “What was the purpose of education, what can we do with it?”; Never having an idea of the benefits gained from being concealed in a large building with 300 other students. The view of school was more considered a daycare meant for children, to be dropped off at 8am and then picked up at 3pm. Teachers would inform the students that they’re preparing us for the future. I partially understood what it meant because everything we learned was repetitive, boring and seem so distant from what I wanted to achieve. At the time I wanted to become a doctor and everything taught wasn't related to it. Until the thought of college anchored my mind in high school, everyone was getting good grades just to attend college and Universities so soon enough, I sat down with my advisor and thats the moment when I understood why education is vital to our growth. My advisor said “education opens your eyes to a wider world, it also gives opportunities for a brighter future. Without education there will no progress in any field of growth like medicine, engineering, it will all remain the same for centuries.” Along the way up the educational ladder, attending college revolutionized my view on education. Not only was it just meant for the greater welfare of a person but it affects us as a whole by having a potential for economic gain and new discoveries. Not all educational growth happens in an academic environment, some may be learned through
School is somewhat comparable to an assembly line. Over the years you learn the basic skills and subjects required to be a productive member of society. I always used to think the assembly line conveyor belt included or led to college education, but I learned differently after taking ERWC. In this class all we’ve talked about for the most part is all the options and paths you can take after graduating high school. There are an abundance of things you can do to sustain yourself after high school, but they all fall into three major categories. College, the military, or going straight into the workforce. Even with these new options surfacing this year, after some comparison and consideration I have still decided that college is my best bet.
