Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell Tale Heart share very similar elements between both short stories. Both shared a broad similarity in the motives why the narrator plotted and killed. The reasoning for both was very ambiguous, and very mentally based. The murders weren’t for any realistic reason. Both short stories also shared similarities with the writing styles. They were in a first person perspective and both used inner thoughts to make the focus of the story on the narrator and his mental processes of what is occurring. Based on the two short stories, Edgar Allan Poe’s writing could be categorized as a psychological thriller or horror. Mind games and perspectives are used as the main substance and reasoning behind the
Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” is a frightening and entertaining short story about the severe consequences that result from persistent mockery and an unforgiving heart. Poe’s excellent use of Gothicism within the story sets the perfect tone for a dark and sinister plot of murder to unfold. “The Cask of Amontillado” simply overflows with various themes and other literary elements that result from Poe’s Gothic style of writing. Of these various themes, one that tends to dominant the story as a whole is the theme of revenge, which Poe supports with his sophisticated use of direct and indirect factors, irony, and symbolism.
The two short stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” share similar and different characteristics. Both written by Edgar Allen Poe, these stories involve murder, possibly insane narrators, and weak victims. They both also contain the theory of madness and obsession. Although these stories share many similar aspects, they differ in murder justification, murder execution, and final outcome of each situation.
Edgar Allan Poe is known for some of the most horrifying stories ever written through out time. He worked with the natural world, animals, and weather to create chilling literature. Two most notable thrillers are “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”. Poe was infatuated with death, disfigurement, and dark characteristics of the world. He could mix characters, setting, theme, and mood in a way that readers are automatically drawn into reading. Both of these short stories have the same major aspects in common.
Poe was very involved in the gothic movement. He influenced gothic writing like no one else of his time. In all three of our stories “The Cask of Amontillado,” “Hop-Frog,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” we can see gothicism at its finest. Poe was a master of writing in the gothic form, he did an especially wonderful job in “The Cask of Amontillado.” In “The Cask of Amontillado,” our main character is Montresor. He has a grudge against a man named Fortunato for a reason that was never explained. The only thing we know about it is that in the first sentence the story states “THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” Now this is all we know about what Fortunato’s insult that
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most celebrated literary authors of all time, known for writing very suspenseful, dramatic short stories and a poet; is considered as being a part of the American Romantic Movement, and a lesser known opinion is he is regarded as the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. Most recognized for his mystery and macabre, a journey into the dark, ghastly stories of death, deception and revenge is what makes up his reputation. The short story under analysis is a part of his latter works; “The Cask of Amontillado”, a story of revenge takes readers into the mind of the murderer.
Edgar Allan Poe is a prominent writer who wrote many peculiar and uncanny short stories and poems. One of the stories Poe wrote, “The Tell Tale Heart,” published in 1843, is about a narrator who is paranoid about an old man’s eye, so he decides to eradicate it. Another story by Poe, “The Cask of Amontillado,” published in 1846, is about a narrator who seeks revenge on his friend because, in the past, he was insulted by him. Both stories contain narrators, which are mentally unstable, but the narrator’s traits, their motives for the murder, and how their guilt is exhibited differ.
I have read both short stories by Edgar Allen Poe, ‘the Cask of Amontillado, as well as ‘the Tell Tale Heart. Between these two stories lie many similarities and few differences. For instance, both of these stories the narrator describes a murder. In the Cask, the narrator Montressor, whose sanity is questionable, describes the way he murdered his rival Fortunato. The man Fortunato, who isn’t all that fortunate in death, has insulted Montressor many times and Montressor seeks revenge for so long, but hasn’t acted until now. Fortunato was a connoisseur of wine, and was a very wealthy man. Montressor is equally as wealthy as he, however, he has something to prove by killing Fortunato, but doesn’t want to be caught doing so. "I must not only
Neurologist Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is widely regarded as the founding father of psychoanalysis: the methods for treating mental illness and the theory which explains human behavior. (McLeod) Identifying that many neuroses stemmed from traumatic experiences, Freud got to work with his patients and developed a breakdown of his philosophy into three categories: Id, Ego, and Superego. American author Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), who is recognized as being a victim of numerous traumatic experiences, himself, reflects Freud’s classifications in his many poems and short stories. Stories such as “The Tell Tale Heart” and the “Cask of Amontillado” highlight the inner-workings of the human mind, specifically and respectively the superego and the id.
Actions and Consequences Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. That is one of Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion. Even though this quote was intended for science, it can also be used for other ways of life. Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” are both great examples of actions having consequences. “The Cask of Amontillado” is a story about a man who traps another man in the French Catacombs.
Edgar Allan Poe wrote a series of psychological stories, among these being “William Wilson” and “Angel of the Odd”. William Wilson is a mysterious story about a supposedly evil doppelganger, while Angel of the Odd is a bit more light and about the dreams a drunken man has about strange incidents. These two stories are clearly contrasted in tone but can be compared in many ways based on the storyline and underlying ideas of the writings.
Vengeful = Villain Revenge has existed for a long time. A vengeful character is often portrayed as the villain which therefore makes a revenge seem evil, but many authors tend to use revenge in books as a way to surprise the reader. Two short stories that feature the theme of revenge are , “The Cask Of Amontillado” (CA) by Edgar Allen Poe and “Sredni Vashtar” (SV) by H.H Munro (Saki). In CA the character’s revenge was motivated by Fortunato using acts of derision on the main character in the past, while in Sredni Vashtar Conradin’s revenge is motivated by Mrs. De Ropp’s absence of sympathy for Conradin. In “Tell-Tale Heart” (TTH) by Edgar Allen Poe, the way that the main character kills the old man is often misunderstood or portrayed as including
Love is such a strong power that the only way to overcome it is to kill it. Edgar Allan Poe’s emotion twisting stories “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell Tale Heart” had many similar, yet different aspects throughout the stories, regarding different topics. One of those being the different motives for killing a person you are close with. Another being that one murderer was caught while the other one wasn’t. Then, finally, the fact that both murders were premeditated. The similarities and differences between the stories all start with the reasons for the murders.
Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne were writers of the American gothic genre. They both used the elements of horror and mystery in their writing styles, writing about the dark side of humanity and the evil that lives within the human mind. Gothic writing focuses on the dark side of humanity and both Poe and Hawthorne captured this style well in their use of themes, symbols, and narration that focused on darkness and evil with their characters fighting various psychological issues. However, Poe’s stories are told in the first person narrative and he focuses on one human psychological effect, looking at man’s thoughts from within his mind and how his behavior then affects his surroundings. He also tends to build a sense on impending doom somewhat stronger than Hawthorne. Hawthorne, on the other hand uses the third person and focuses more on how man’s thoughts and behaviors are the results of what is happening around him. His stories also tend to be more of a romantic nature than Poe’s and he tends to create stories of conflicting interpretations to share lessons of life.
There are many different similarities between the two short stories,“The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”. Nonetheless,“The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” are in first person, meaning the characters are taking to the reader and wanting to be on their point of view. For example,“The Cask of Amontillado”, in the beginning, Montresor is talking about himself and “you, who so well know the nature of my soul” (Poe 139). Montressor wants the reader to be on his side, so if he was going to do something, the reader had to think it was the right choice even though he might have been wrong. Montresor wants revenge on Fortunato for insulting him, and has always wanted to be equal with the opponent or higher than them. In addition, “The Tell-Tale Heart” also is in first person and how the reader tells the reader their part of the story. For example, in the story the narrator was telling the reader about himself and who he is, and “observe how healthy how calmly; can tell you the whole story”( Poe 1). Since this is in first person, the readers only could understand it in the point of view that the narrator sees it or tells it. Yet, the readers never know the other side. The narrator wants to tell the reader their story but they want the reader to think their side is the correct side. The two stories both have the main character that is in involved with a murder. Fortunato insulted Montresor and since then he wanted to plan his revenge, he wants him dead
