The Cask of Amontillado is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in November 1846 in Godey’s Lady’s Book. () Poe wrote this story right before his final decline, caused by the death of his wife Virginia Clemm. There are two main characters: Fortunato and Montresor. This second one wants to take revenge on Fortunato as an answer to his supposed insults. Montresor tricks his enemy, taking him to his home’s crypts with the promise of the tasting of some new wine. However, once they arrive there Montresor begins entombing Fortunato so he dies of dehydration. Poe is characterized by writing terror stories and this is the case of The Cask of Amontillado, as he uses the settings and the characters to frighten. Poe sets the story in an unknown town or village in Italy during carnival season, which is supposed to be a season of happiness and light: "It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season." (3) It could be said that it is set in Venice, as it has the most important carnival in Italy, and it would give sense to the main topic of the story in relation to the well-known Italian “vendetta:” revenge. However, later in the story, Montresor chains and entombs Fortunato in the catacombs of his house, a dark place. This last setting is …show more content…
He was a very calculating and cold person. Readers never know how he is feeling about Fortunato, they just know about those “thousand injuries” (3) and “insults” (3), and that he is waiting for the best chance to kill Fortunato: “I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.” (3) He perfectly knows the major weakness of his rival and he takes advantage of it: Fortunato is very proud and follows Montresor to be the first one trying a new Amontillado wine. He also chooses the best moment to commit his crime: the
Edgar Allan Poe is a famous writer in writing detective stories and horror stories. One of his horror stories, “The Cask of Amontillado” was talking about how a man took his revenge to his friend. However, to look deeply in this story, I found that this story was not just simply a horror tale about how a man gets his revenge in the safest way. Instead, it also demonstrates much irony in several areas: the title, the event, the season, the costume, the environment, the characters’ personalities, a man’s dignity and cockiness and at the end, the public order. he are
Thematically very different, “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe and “A&P” by John Updike are both tales told through the eyes of one main character and one has to be conscious of how truthful and reliable those characters words are. However, while both stories are told in the first person, the reliability of both Montresor and Sammy differ greatly.

"The Cask of Amontillado" is one of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest stories. In this story Poe introduces two central characters and unfolds a tale of horror and perversion. Montresor, the narrator, and Fortunato, one of Montresor's friends, are doomed to the fate of their actions and will pay the price for their pride and jealousy. One pays the price with his life and the other pays the price with living with regret for the rest of his life. Poe uses mystery, irony, and imagery to create a horrifying, deceptive, and perverse story.
"I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong." With these ferverous words from the introductory paragraph of Edgar Allan Poe's Cask of Amontillado, the story of Montresor's revenge begins. Poe repeatedly stresses the need for revenge due to bitterness and resentment in Montresor's character towards Fortunato, but more importantly, stress is placed on revenge by which the victim realizes their injustice towards the redresser. Unfortunately, it seems that Montresor is denied this pure and encompassing revenge when his victim,

By: Harshul Jain The Cask of Amontillado is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe is known for using Gothic conventions in his stories which mostly includes the atmosphere of mystery, oppressiveness to create terror but interestingly he subverts the Gothic conventions by having having human beings, instead of a supernatural element, create most horrible deeds. Poe tries to achieve that horror via the capabilities of the humans. Poe uses unreliable narrator and psyches to propel the story. The Cask of Amontillado is a classic example of such a story. In regards to how diction was utilized in the vignette, Poe often chose specific words which may have seemed to convey one thing, but actually possessed underlying implications of a different message entirely. For instance, in one of the initial scenes in the "Cask of Amontillado," the anonymous main character tells another character named Fortunato, "I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts...and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing a bargain" (TCOA, Poe). While such a statement might seem innocent on the surface, the anonymous narrator previously informed the reader that he intended to exact revenge on Fortunato through wine, a subject in
An important element in any story is setting. Authors use setting to convey certain feelings brought on by the character’s surroundings. It also subliminally serves to illustrate the character’s intentions. In “The Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allen Poe uses the dark, imposing setting to do just that, communicate the underlying theme of the story, being death, revenge and deception.

The setting creates the enviornment for the entire story, the time and the place. Every single part of the story revolves around this. What the characters look like, how they talk to eachother, where they live, what is going on around them. The main conflict is even determined by the time period and where in the world it takes place. For example, the story "The Cask of Amontillado" is set in Paris, France around the rennaissance era. but theres more to the setting than just that. "It was about dusk one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that i encountered with my friend." This describes more about the enviornment around the characters in the beggining of the story. Then the setting shifts,"Its walls had been lined with
