The theme for The Cask of Amontillado is that no one provokes someone with impunity. The theme refers to when Montresor tells Fortunato his family motto, which was “nemo me impune lacessit”(Edgar 211). This short story is about revenge, where Fortunato has “injured” Montresor enough to make him want to murder Fortunato. Montresor didn't want Fortunato to get away with insulting him, so he vowed to get revenge. The history behind this story that has to do with Edgar Allan Poe himself is quite interesting. When Edgar Allan Poe was younger, he was a private at Fort Independence in 1827. There was an officer that was new and mostly everyone liked him, except for captain Green who was known to be a bully.
