Over the fifty years between the events of The Cask Of Amontillado and the time when Montresor narrates the story, time changed Montresor into a guilty and shamed man that may have PTSD.

Poe and Byron both used a dark, creepy setting in their novels. Poe had his story set in a crypt, and Byron had his story set in a dungeon. Both of the novels had at least one individual chained up in a deep, isolated, underground structure. In "The Cask of Amontillado" Monstresor buried up his lifelong rival while he was chained up to a wall screaming, and thrashing the chains he was on. In "The Prisoner of Chillon" it is three silent prisoners chained up on a column in a dungeon where they couldn't see each other, or move at all.
