Poverty is one of the most prevalent issues in our world today. In many third world countries, most of citizens live in poverty. Somalia is one of these third world countries that have extreme rates of poverty. There are many factors that have led to these major rates of poverty. Somalia’s economy is very bad because of the high unemployment rates and piracy. Because of the civil war that happened in Somalia, the government is not able to help decrease poverty levels. Lack of education in the country makes it difficult for people to get jobs. The economy, the government and the education levels are some of the most prevalent issues leading to this high rate of poverty within Somalia. At one point in Somalia’s history, many people did not like the government that was in place. These groups of people that did not like the government took action and left the country in chaos, “When Somalia president Siad Barre was overthrown by opposing clans in 1991, the Horn of Africa state was plunged into anarchy. Instead of government, Somalis had lawlessness and civil war.” (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 2). Even though there is a government now that has been reinstalled, there is still a group that opposes the government name, al-Shabab. The government abuses their power in attempts to defeat the group, “In December 2013, government forces attacked KM-50 village, where they fought a local militia, beat residents, and looted and burned homes and shops. Several civilians were reportedly killed and many civilians fled the area.” (World Report 2015: Somalia, n.d. Abuses by Government Forces section, para. 3). Even though they are trying their best to take care of the al-Shabab, they are still harming citizens and destroying their properties. This is increasing the poverty levels within the country because people need to rebuild their homes and businesses. For some people this could mean a loss in there total income. These are the reasons that the government in Somalia is affecting the major amounts of poverty that are in the …show more content…
Education is very important for everyone to have but many of the schools that were located within Somalia are gone, “In Central South Somalia more than three quarters of public schools that existed before the civil war have been destroyed and/or closed and state intervention in the education sector has been limited.” (Education in Somalia, n.d. para. 2). Meaning that many of the children who live in Somalia, are not getting a proper education. Even if they go to receive an education, they are not there for very long, “Children are in school for an average of only three years, with 50 percent of the child population contributing to the work force.” (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 9). Because these people live in such poverty, these children choose to work to earn some money instead of receiving an education. Many people in the country are illiterate, “Only 37.8 percent of the population over the age of 15 can read and write.” (Poverty in Somalia, n.d. para. 8). Because of these facts, many of the Somalian people cannot get better jobs. This also makes it extremely difficult for the Somalian people to go to different countries in search for a better life. These are the reasons why the education of the Somalian people have a major effect on the high poverty levels in the
More than 3 billion people are living in poverty across the world, among those an estimated 43.1 million people in America are living in poverty. There are many causes of poverty, but mass incarceration is one of the most prominent ones. When people get out of prison or jail, they have a very low chance of getting a job and finding a home because they have the label of being a criminal. People tend to explain poverty especially poverty in America is that people are lazy and do not want to work, but that is not the reason at all. The government is ultimately responsible for distinguishing who is in poverty and what measures are going to be done to help those people get assistance. But because people do not particularly talk about this
Over the past years poverty has become more common in America, affecting millions of Americans. There are two types of poverty: absolute poverty and relative poverty. According to Merriam-Webster (2017), Absolute poverty is not having any basic human needs to survive, in the other hand, relative poverty is not having enough money or resources like others in society do. Poverty is caused by lack of money, jobs, and education.
The United States defines poverty for a family of four as being less than $16,036 per year, or $4,009 per person (Leone 12). People find themselves under this line for an innumerable amount of reasons. Some of these causes are under one's control and others are greater factors beyond an individual's power. Each family or individual person has unique and separate reasons for living in a state poverty. There is no way to try and define them all. Focusing in, three main topics arise that encompass the most predominant reasons for a person to fall into poverty. Education, family life and influence, along with the business cycle may work individually or together to cause poverty. These three leading
Henslin (2014) said “Richard Rodriguez represents millions of immigrants – not just those of Latino origin but those from other cultures, too-who want to integrate into U.S culture yet not betray their past. Fearing loss of their roots, they are caught between two cultures, each beckoning, each offering rich rewards”
America is one of the wealthiest nations in the world with having a high inequality than other industrialized countries. Inequality exists in income, wealth, power and education. People who are legally and socially poor in the United States tend to stay in a cycle through life, not always by choice, but because they are given less opportunities, education and tools to achieve their success. The poverty stricken class has a significantly larger income gap than the upper class, the American Dream is weakened through opportunity and is shown through statistics.
Poverty in America is one of the longest fought battles in America along with homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, racism and immigration. Poverty is the state or condition of having little to no money, goods, or means of support. Some causes of poverty vary from lack of employment, lack of education, Economic changes, and mental / physical disabilities. While suffering from poverty, it is hard to be a part of society. One may even debate that political, social, and cultural factors can also contribute to the causes of poverty. The voices of poverty go unheard on a daily basis. Welfare, food stamps, wic and other government assistance programs are designed to help those that live
Poverty rates in the U.S. have increased by 4percent since the 1960s reaching 15.1percent. As a result of such poverty, many families are having difficulty living and continuing their education. The U.S. has tried to get the poverty rates to drop by creating social security, financial aid, and welfare. Poverty causes a major problem not only in the U.S., but all over the world. Poverty causes many families to struggle to survive; 88 million people live in absolute poverty, while nearly 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 and some even less at $1.25 a day, which is not nearly enough for your average family. There are many causes for poverty, including but not limited to, education, environmental issues, sexually transmitted diseases, lack of money, and overpopulation.
American economist and statistician, Mollie Orshansky, was the woman who gave America the way on how to measure poverty that we call the Orshansky Poverty Thresholds. The Census Bureau issues the poverty thresholds every year and that produces the status of the American people economically. The very term “poverty” continues to evoke debates on what it actually means to be poor. There are many studies that have been conducted to determine what is the cause of poverty in America and what we can do to help diminish it. From a sociological standpoint, one thing everyone should focus on when it comes to poverty is to ask yourself why people are living the way they are. People do not just wake up one day and decide that they want to be poor, let
When we think of the word "poverty", the mind fills us with Third World countries. We think of countries within the African continent, Haiti, Central and South America, among others. The United States is a country with a heterogeneous society, full of many races and nationalities. However, we forget that poverty can be in front of us. How many times have we wondered if our neighbor, coworker, or our students are going through some need?
Scotland today is a divided society in many different aspects. These vary from housing to education however the basis of all social divides today is poverty. In recent years many social policies have been introduced to tackle these inequalities however some of which have been much more effective than others.
Poverty refers to the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support. Society often classifies this state as being poor. According to dosomething.org, 805 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat, and nearly ½ of the world's population lives on less than 2.50 dollars a day. Dosomething.org states that 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty on less than 1.25 a day, 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty, and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. These statistics are rather alarming, and the first step to finding a solution to this problem is determining the exact cause. Many would ask how this transpired. The answer to this is the determining factor of what happened and the cause of
The Federal Republic of Somalia is a country in East Africa, bordering the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. With a poor economy and a population of 10.5 million, it is no surprise that Somalia struggles to provide safety and resources for all its citizens. The official language is Somali, the main religion is Sunni Muslim and 85% of the inhabiting population is Somali (Central Intelligence Agency, (2015.) ).
Political instability in Somalia disrupted the stream of oil into Mogadishu. As fuels get to be rare, their value goes up. Numerous individuals then call for value controls on these resources. As to this, substitute energy sources replaces diesel used generators. Expense sparing generators, such as ammonia gas generators, and heavy oil, generators may replace diesel generators in a few zones. It demonstrates that 65.6 percent of the Somali populace is in serious poverty, yet when supporting factors, like access to education, health care, and standard of living are considered, a startling 81.2 percent of the populace are thought to be in poverty.
According to Maryan Qasim, an advisor in the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and an expert in women 's rights, the most dangerous thing women can do in Somalia is not go to war, but give birth (Qasim). Over the past decade the country has not only struggled with gender inequality, but with civil war (Somalia country profile). To this day, the country remains in conflict and anarchy. Without laws or a solid form of government, the Somali people suffer from drought, famine and destitution (Qasim). The Gender Inequality Index in Somalia is .776, placing Somalia at the fourth highest position globally (Gender in Somalia). This statistic includes many factors and results from not only the lack of
Somalia is a frightening case as all of the individual factors contributing to national instability are cyclical and compounding. If an effective government is the main pillar supporting all aspects of a country, then in Somalia, this pillar crumbled in 1991 and has yet to be rebuilt on asolid foundation. Somali National Security Forces (SNSF) and police forces are ineffective at enforcing law and providing security at the borders and for the people. According to a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) report, the SNSF target innocent Somalis through extortion during their operations (UNSC, 2013). In result, Somalia is incapable of attacking the humanitarian catastrophe from within. Somalis “survival of the fittest” philosophy and lack of education further separates people from the government.
