In the video you could also see people in panic running to find the nearest exit. Also I kept seeing post of people searching for their children in hospitals, some parents went home that night not knowing where their children were or if they were even alive and some went home knowing they were never gonna see their child alive again. Another picture that I saw was of a girl, she had blood running down her arm and couldn't walk, she was one of the lucky ones that had survived. I had read another article which said that more than 240 emergency calls were made, 60 ambulances, and 400 police officers were
The Sacrifice, written by Katheen Benner Duble, is a historical fiction novel that takes place in Massachusetts. During the year, 1692, people were fearful of witchcraft and the main characters, Abigail and her sister, Dorothy were just two of the many unfortunates who were accused. Throughout this novel Abigail and many others learn to not let fear take over your actions, especially because those actions can really hurt others. This is the theme of the novel and it sends a powerful message that can apply to everyone. This theme can be seen through the setting, plot, and characters throughout this novel. Additionally, Duble used juxtaposition, foreshadowing, metaphors, similes, situational irony, and many more literary devices to develop
Columbine, 1999, 15 dead. Sandy Hook, 2012, 28 dead. How many of you had ever have to practice different emergency drills in elementary school? For either earthquakes, fires, strangers on campus… Now how many of you have actually gone through the real thing?
From the street there were people screaming and running it was mass chaos. At this time you could see the media and firefighters everywhere. I got the hell out of there went home hugged my wife. I realized God had spared me that day. A lot of my friends and coworkers died that day. I’m truly sorry, sometimes I feel guilty that I didn’t do my part to help but I was afraid for my life. A couple of my friends that made it from a bit higher up said it sounded like a bunch of explosions. I remember thinking after hearing from them and seeing the video footage what the heck happened? In my opinion it felt like a bomb (Jones).
Have you ever felt that you had to sacrifice yourself or something that was important to you to get something else? Throughout Khaled Hosseini’s novel The Kite Runner Amir the main character has to sacrifice many things. Amir and Hassan are best friends but Hassan is a servant to Amir. Baba treats Hassan just like Amir. “I actually aspired to cowardice, because the alternative, the real reason I was running, was that Assef was right: Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba”(Hosseini 77). “The scene in which Hassan gets raped by Assef and Amir runs away from the alley where it is taking place. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner, is important because Hosseini uses it to establish that sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself to get something else by/through sometimes sacrificing things is necessary but painful .”
Memory is a very important part in this very popular event. Knowing what to do in this type of situation is very significant. When an unfamiliar person comes into a school or building the staff and teachers should be aware as to what to do and how to handle it. The teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School knew exactly what to do and they handled it in a very calm manner. It is important when you
In Montecito Heights, CA, a woman was out taking her dog for a walk in Ernest E. Debs Park (LINK 1) when she discovered the bodies of two teen girls. The girls were identified as Briana Gallegos 17, and Gabriela Calzada 19, who was not mentioned if they were in a gang themselves, they were affiliates of a local gang.
Through this tragedy, educators have learned a different approach to intruders. We teach students to think for themselves through a training program called ALICE: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. There is no linear progression to ALICE. Through studies, we have learned the best chance for survival is to evacuate the building and run. ALICE teaches schools, teachers, and students how to respond in intruder situations. Schools all across the country including hundreds in our area conduct weekly ALICE drills. An example of items implemented from our ALICE trainings include: a method of communication to all teachers and students, increase in the number of school security cameras, door locking mechanisms on every classroom door to be used in the event that a classroom cannot evacuate and needs to “shelter in place” and finally, a go-bucket. Items in a go-bucket vary across schools but if you google the term you will see these items include: items to barricade a door, items to defend oneself, items such as wasp spray, which can
Two other 12-year-old girls, who allegedly made a pact to commit suicide, died earlier this year. Jolynn Winter took her life on Jan. 8 and Chantel Fox followed suit just two days later.
Twenty-one children were injured and four young girls lost their lives that day. [Figure 1]
No one ever thought this event could happen; moreover, it serves to show that history may repeat itself and we need listen to the survivors’ stories. This event lies in history, and the United States helped to end the tragic and deadly incident. I am interested in learning more information dealing with this topic; furthermore, I will be learning about it in Modern American class later this
In the society we live in today, it is hard to go for a long period of time without hearing of or about a type of disaster which has occurred that could have been prevented. The worst kind of disasters to hear or learn about consist of the disasters in which a school has been involved. With the increasing in security at schools to prevent fatal disasters, many questions have started to rise with concerns about whether or not if the amount of security necessary. In other words, does the amount of security in schools help prevent more disasters, or does the opposition out way the deposition? The amount of security in schools does impact the prevention of fatal disasters.
Sacrificial suicide, more commonly known as sati, commenced in the Indian subcontinent as a Hindu custom. Devi Sati was born to Queen Parusuti and King Dakhsha, who, desiring to parent a baby girl turned to Devi Adi Parashakti to seek help. The Devi promised to grant their wish, stating that she herself would be born to them, but that if her manifestation is ever humiliated or insulted, she would leave the queen and king’s lives forever. When Devi Sati reached adolescence, she wished to wed Lord Shiva against the King’s command, but the King humiliated her so Sati set fire to herself and bore a sacrifice to defend her honor. The custom of sati persisted in the subcontinent for centuries and in fact persists to today. A widow immolating herself on her husband’s funeral pyre or committing suicide one or another way is seen as a symbol or marital felicity and longevity, as specified by Hindu scriptures. British imperialists not only justified imperialism by exemplifying sati, but also often took credit of the practice’s abolishment in 1829. The specifics and history of this practice can be demonstrate through three divergent theories: stadial, hybridity, and post-structuralist.
When there’s a disaster like this, the media expect a lot of looting, lack of response to the disaster, victims in need of rescue, and even death. But if the media does not believe it is sensational enough, they will create or as this learner likes to call it lie about the facts to gain the attention they need to create ratings for their news stations no matter what, because good news does not catch the viewers’ attention nor does it help their ratings, but bad news is a attention getter, and will help raise their ratings, and maybe even put them in line for The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards for reporters. The other things that they did not see too much of was the lawlessness or looting, so they exaggerated the severity.
My first reaction to this attack was to call the local authorities to handle opening an investigation on this crime, and call the ambulances to get medical attention to those who needed it. I drove to the site once I was notified of the incident, and I made sure everyone was out of the building. We cleared the area of any pedestrian traffic and helped those who were injured until the emergency personnel arrived at the scene. I also instructed my employees to write down what they remembered happening before, during, and after the attack to aid the authorities during their interviews. I also wanted to ensure I was the one to call the family members of those who were killed, and do my part to help them with funeral arrangements.
