Catholic religion is one of the oldest religions, highly practiced in the United States. It is a religion with a set of beliefs such as practicing celibacy among the priests and nuns. Each and every state in America has several parishes and a bishop that oversees the operations of the churches in those said regions. For instance, in the State of Phoenix, there is a bishop with several priests in every parish handling the operations of the churches. The Catholics follow a set of beliefs and traditions that mirror the morality in the society. However, these beliefs are being eroded by the some of the followers in various parts of the world. In fact, the Catholic Church has become a subject of serious allegations of child sexual abuse at the hands of the clergy. Several cases have occurred globally even the most high profile cases occurring in Europe and America. Majority of the people ha come forward and reported the incidents of clerical sexual misconducts. They have done so under investigative reporting talking about years of abuse on the part of the priests together with cover-ups and patterns of secrecy by church officials that aided in allowing these accused priests in continuing to their ministries in the various parishes and this involved interaction with mirrors. Canonical, civil, and criminal sanctions have been directed to several bishops, priests, and even dioceses. However, there are those that have managed to escape the hands of justice and continue to engage in
Beginning in the Middle Ages and through the seventeenth centuries, witch trials occurred in Europe. Many people were accused of being witches some of these people were accused of being witches for not following Christian beliefs at that time and others followed witch prosecutions for goods and money. Furthermore, the stereotypes of witches at this period also had a role in causing witch prosecutions. In this essay I argue how these three components led to the death of so-called witches. Firstly, I will discuss how the Catholic Church had an impact on most prosecutions. Secondly, I will explain how social stereotypes of that period have also influenced with the causes of prosecution of many alleged witches. Thirdly, I will discuss how
When one hears of a cult, one thinks of organizations such as the Church of Scientology, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and small fanatical groups such as the Assembly of God. According to Robert J. Lofton, author of Letters to an Elder, there are two kinds of cults; those that use mind-control, and those that do not. Lofton describes eight characteristics of destructive mind-control cults, saying, “If any group exercises all eight of these control elements, they are, in fact a destructive mind control cult”. Lofton’s characteristics are ‘Environmental Control’, ‘Mystical Manipulation’, ‘Demand for Purity’, ‘Cult of Confession’, ‘Sacred Science’, ‘Loading the Language’, ‘Doctrine over Person’, and ‘Dispensing of Existence’. These eight
“In the 60s, the Catholic Church in Massachusetts began hearing complaints that Father James Porter was sexually molesting children. Rather than relieving him of his duties, the ecclesiastical authorities simply moved him from one parish to another between 1960 and 1967, actually providing him with a fresh supply of unsuspecting families and innocent children to abuse” (Ericsson 162).
The Great Papal Schism is also known as the Western Schism that lasted from 1378 – 1417, during which the papacy (the position itself) was in great divide between three popes in the Roman Catholic Church. This political upheaval within the Roman Catholic Church caused distrust of the western civilization towards the church. It began after the Avignon Papacy or the more commonly referred to, “Babylonian captivity of the papacy” which was when the papal court was moved to France and French cardinals who later became popes from 1309-1378 resided in Avignon, France (a total of seven French popes by the papal names Clement V all the way to Gregory XI, who moved the court back to Rome) while being heavily influenced by the French kings; this also resulted to the decline of the papal power and authority (Miller, Study.com).
With Europe’s many problems that revolve around its spectrum of society, there grows a much bigger concern that has been causing tension in Europe dating back to the 1500’s when Martin Luther began a movement against corruption in the Roman Catholic Church, also known as the Reformation. Government corruption portrays itself as an abuse of power for individual gain and even proves to have a longer history to when the Bible incorporated laws constraining bribery. This indicates that the practice of government corruption has been repeating itself long over 3,500 years ago and that corruption is capable of going beyond bribery. An earliest example would be the rise of the
In over a period of years, an increasing amount of attention has been shed to the problem of child sexual abuse in the church. While churches, and other facilities which care for children, have had their experience of this problem, most attention has been brought to the abuse in the Catholic Church. Around the world, case after case has been seen in the press of clergy and members of religious orders being charged with sex offenses against children. Some of these cases go back decades. The issue has certainly brought attention around the world. The reason why, is the question that ponders in everyone mind.
This article interests me because they are eager to respond in this kind of situation by suspending the priest, whose mistake only is to used the product of modern technology as a way of reaching his young parishioners during mass, while the diocese authorities never suspend priests who keep molesting children.
The Boston Catholic Church’s dangerous employment of power prevented justice and instead allowed for the growth in number of churches and children that were exposed to the sexually abusive priests through the concealment of the abuse.
Corruption in the Catholic Church was real; the Church has always had a strong present in Mexico since the beginnings. For instance, those in the strong circle of the Church who are not part of the clergy have always been men of power who hold swayed over the government. They have passed laws that benefit the Church, such as the example I pointed out before of Title 1. Precisely, for this reason, was why the Mexican liberals hated the clergy. The main problem and reason why the anti-clerical liberals wanted to remove the clergy in Government was “Fueros”, which means corporate immunities. For the Church, corporate immunities meant that if there was a transgression in the clerical power they were subjected to a different form of justice than the Mexican people. The Liberals saw it as the highest form a corruption because basically those part of the clergy circle who were men of power could get away with corruption. Laws like the example that was given were what ultimately what triggered the anti-clerical liberals to fight back, and that is why by 1861 when Benito Juarez re-established the Mexican government. Once Benito Juarez establishes the Federal Constitution of the United Mexican States of 1857, the Catholic Church was slowly starting to lose the control it had over the Government.
The Catholic Church is the oldest major religion in the Western world. Littered with peace, love, and humility, along with violence, turmoil, and controversy this institution has seen, heard, led, and had influence over the majority of everything and everybody that there was in the last two millennia. This has included ordinary people, Kings, Queens, Generals, Nobleman, Royalty, and everything in between, and has endured since the beginning of the modern era, Anno Domini. They great spiritual and monetary machine created a powerful reign over the entire world’s Catholics, and remains so to this day. For the purpose of background for my visit to a Catholic Church, being Presbyterian, I did historical research before I visited. I
The priest represented corruption with the Church by forcing the natives to convert to Christianity. The priest started thinking about marrying Kino and Juana in his church and how the church could benefit from their money. The priest also started thinking about baptizing Coyotito for more money. The priest was a bad example of the Holy Church because he was not truly concerned about the wellbeing of Kino's family, only really thinking of them once they had the slight possibility of wealth. The priest then has a sermon he does every year on breaking out of the economic system, and how you are a sinner if you attempt a better life by not accepting the station God gave
To be sure, people have always suffered from curiosity, and even Eve fell victim to this, but as time progressed the Catholic Church and new age ideas grew because of this curiosity. There are many examples of curiosity killing, early Christians by Rome, Spanish Inquisition, and the Holocaust, were situation that people killed people either for lack of knowledge or their curiosity of the opposing system. This curiosity helped to develop people’s views away from spiritual thoughts, and more into a physical world. From seeking knowledge to explain consciousness to figuring out earthly knowledge. For example, science used this curiosity on people, sometimes on accident like small pox, or other times on purpose like the Tuskegee experiment, in
The church had a study done by researchers at John Jay College. In two major reports spanning from 1950 to 2010, the church had the researchers report on the scope and nature of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests. The research disclosed some important issues (John Jay College Research Team, 2004). The major findings disclosed there was no single cause as a predictor of abuse, 75% of the abuses were alleged to have taken place from 1960-1984, there were about 3,000 priests accused of abuse
The world has more than one billion Catholics and with the ever growing population, it will only get larger in number. To be a Catholic means to have complete faith in God and his divine grace. Having God's divine grace means to obey it and keep it holy as it was created by God and given to his people. The religion itself is based on this and the people take it very seriously. Catholics believe that all people are of good nature but when one commits a sin it not only hurts that one person but the people and the Church.
I believe we exist for one purpose. That purpose is to worship and reflect our Heavenly Father. He has given His instructions to us in the Bible. The Bible tells of how we are to administer the church, how we are to worship in the church and who is to have roles in the church.
