The Causes Of Gun Violence In America

From January 1, 2015 to December 23 of that same year a total of 12,942 people had been killed in America due to gun violence. These numbers include murders, accidental shootings, and murder suicides. According to a nonprofit website that records gun deaths in America called “Gun Violence Archive”, there were more than 50,000 gun violence incidents in 2015 alone. This includes homicides, gang incidents, and accidental and self-defense shootings, but it does not, however, include the near 20,000 American deaths due to gun suicides that occur each year.

During the past years gun violence has seen an enormous increase in various parts of the world and majority of the cases been reported in the United States. The case includes victims such as children, senior citizens and young adults engaging in violence or getting caught in the crossfires. The life of common people is being affected, people are concerned as to how they can live safe lives when guns are being used in increasing numbers. On an average, every day you hear about some sort of gun violence affecting people either in your hometown or in another part of the world. In the United States, the average number of gun shot victims is through the roof. A good amount of these victims are even child. We often see too much gun related violence in today’s news. Throughout the years we have seen a large increase of shootings in the United States. According to the Huffington Post, from January 2013 to October 2015 there has been 994 shootings out of the 1,004 days. It is no doubt that we are in living in a society where these shootings are becoming a repeated occurrence. This is a highly controversial topic

It is widely agreed that the United States has a very large number of guns compared to other countries. If guns really keep Americans safe, the United States would be the safest place in the world since it is estimated that 270 million firearms are owned. Compared to the world richest nations, the United States has the highest gun accidents, murders, and suicides among them all. An investigative report conducted in 2012 by Mother Jones Magazine found that between 1995 and 2012, the number of guns has increased by 50% while the population has increased only by 20% (Doeden). Firearm injuries are the second leading cause of injury death in the United States. In 2010, the percentage of homicides committed by firearms was 67.5 percent. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence estimated 97,820 people are shot and killed in the United States yearly, averaging 268 people per day, since 1972 (Newhard pp13). Unfortunately, with some many Americans killed by guns every day, shootings in the United States have become so common, many citizens have grown immune to the news.

Secondly, the major part of this issue is law-based as “US federal law says almost anyone can buy a gun” (Speiser). And so, most of these individuals involved in gun violence may be suffering from severe mental stress. Also, being in presence of gun violence in an individual’s environment promotes the use of a fire-arm to feel safe and empowered. Therefore, there should be more involvement in these communities to deviate the gun violence from the youth. In addition, there should be stricter laws for induvial to purchase firearms. For example, “in Japan, touching a gun without a license can result in 10 years in prison” (Speiser) and you must go through an extensive protocol to even be able to qualify to carry an armed weapon.

According to the U.S Department of Justice “In 1994, 44 million Americans owned 192 million firearms” (p. 1), during the same year, 1,374 people were killed and 14,951 people were injured because of an unintentional firearm situation (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999). Here’s the issue: the amount of people being victims of accidental gun deaths and injuries “has remained relatively constant since” wrote the University of Utah on its document Gun Control Issues, Public Health, and Safety.

There has been a great surge of discussion about the threat of gun violence here in the United States, a topic that has been expanded into a national and even international debate. Gun violence today affects many, and has been highly scrutinized by lawmakers, lobbyists, which has coined pro/anti gun activists. But what are the numbers telling us? In this essay I will talk about gun violence and how it is a major problem in America; many see this problem but there’s still not a solution to fix it. Gun violence is getting out of hand and there needs to be a solution, our states need to get tough on gun crimes. Gun violence is one of the major problems that several citizens in the American society face today. Over the past years, there has been several research studies and discussions about whether or not laws about owning guns should be enforced more strictly than they have been. There has been several ways that officials have tried to put a halt on the negative use of guns and the deaths they cause every year. However, the problem is, nothing seems to be effective enough to stop the crimes that are committed using these deadly weapons.

In the past few weeks, my class has been working with the subject: gun violence. What does gun violence mean? It stands for any gun used to cause harm or death.

Gun violence is a big problem in America which needs to be fixed, enacting more laws that restrict usage and ownership of firearms is not the answer, doing so will only create more violence and deaths, American crime rates are lower when compared to other countries when the debates started, the crime rate sky rocketed making people buy more guns and ammunition. Between the years 2000 and 2010, 335,609 people died by injuries from firearms. With more guns on the streets, this puts a greater risk to children and the mentally disabled, because with more guns on streets they can hurt themselves and others. (SC 4)

The strategies I used to find the articles were to search on Google some words like “gun violence” or “causes of gun violence”, and it’s efficient because I found a lot of useful articles that related to the topic. The other way of finding useful articles is to use our university’s database which provides a variety of reliable articles. The sources from which I got the best complete information was from the Forbes, CNS News, and The Guardian. These articles are from magazine and newspaper which are very reliable. They provide a complete and accurate information about the causes of gun violence which is well related to my research paper’s topic, and they also provide some data to make us have a clear comparison and view of the problem. There are about 10,000 gun homicides that occur a year and 20.000 gun suicides that occur a year (Heroux, 2013). The United States has far more gun related killings than any other developed country, but not the most of any country. However gun violence is not the leading cause of violence in America, it is simply just the most salient (Heroux, 2013). People who loves owning or shooting guns don't necessarily love violence. There are plenty of people who own guns but would never think about using it on someone. In 2015, there were 12,000 deaths that resulted from gun violence and only 39 of those deaths occurred from mass shooting(Berkowitz). This number shows that guns not only cause mass shootings but also suicides and homicides.Although the motive may be unclear if there were more restrictions and background checks this number would increase. Firearms, were used in 71.5% murders, 41% of robberies and 24.2% of aggravated assaults(Planty). These numbers show how accessible guns are and how much danger and trouble that guns cause. Having access to guns can give anybody and opportunity to steal, kill, or assault.
