Our failing economy plays a huge role in this issue, as well as, many other factors but there is no one cause of poverty (UNESCO). Gottdiener, Hutchinson, and Ryan suggest that the uneven development of the economy can be a factor that causes poverty. It is also suggested that poverty maybe caused by both the behavior of individuals and political/economic structures and everything in between (Payne). Overpopulation, changing trends in the economy, lack of education, epidemic diseases, and environmental issues are also factors of poverty (UNESCO). In my opinion, I believe poverty influences problems like hunger, malnutrition, and disease that distresses individuals in poverty. I also think that racial/population segregation play a major role as well as a cause of why so many individuals are forced to live in poverty. Poverty is a common social issue that has troubled nations for thousands of years. While nations like the United States of America have worked diligently to eradicate it domestically, it still widely exists.“According to the U.S. Citizen burow 47.6 million citizens living in poverty.With 20% of those households living in extreme poverty.”(PBS.org)

More than 800 million people in the world are malnourished, 777 million of them are from the developing world (Raphel, S., 2014). Poverty is an issue that must be addressed to the population loud and clear or everyone will end up suffering. There are many families trying to survive and live from paycheck to paycheck. Unfortunately, there are some families that are unable to support himself or herself or any family member. One important key issue of poverty in the United States is inequality. Many Americans blame the poor people for their own fate but you should never judge a book by its cover. There can be many reasons why an individual or families end up in poverty. For example, low wage jobs, discrimination and social inequality, vulnerability to natural disasters, war and political instability. Another big issue we face today is child poverty. This is a very critical issue because these young children are our future. If we let these children live in poverty, there is a higher chance they will drop out of school, look for work in order to support their family, or give up in life.

More than 3 billion people are living in poverty across the world, among those an estimated 43.1 million people in America are living in poverty. There are many causes of poverty, but mass incarceration is one of the most prominent ones. When people get out of prison or jail, they have a very low chance of getting a job and finding a home because they have the label of being a criminal. People tend to explain poverty especially poverty in America is that people are lazy and do not want to work, but that is not the reason at all. According to osomething.org 805 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat, and nearly ½ of the world 's population lives on less than 2.50 dollars a day. Osomething.org states that 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty on less than 1.25 a day, 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty, and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. First of all, money is a big factor of poverty. Children that grow up in a poor family are most likely to become poor as well. Not having enough money can cause people not to do as much things as others with money can do. Not having money causes lack of food, health, and shelter. Growing up in poverty can cause people to not have enough resources to get an education. A common situation  in America is homelessness due to the lack of money people cannot afford a home, so they have to turn to the streets. People usually beg for money on the streets just to get by for a couple of days since they do not have any money.  Divorce can also cause poverty because if a couple separates that means less income coming home due to their separation. If a family cannot get used to the change in their family it can lead to poverty. Usually one parent stays with the children and the other parent does not help. As you can see, there are more than the basics of poverty. These poor people struggle on a daily basis to provide the needs of themselves and their family. Poverty affects adults and their children in so many ways. I believe that poverty should be one of the main focuses of America. I have deep sorrow for these people doing whatever they can to make money. I think that poverty needs to be decreased in the United States. I don’t know how the people in poverty do it. They have a weight that they are carrying on their shoulders that they shouldn’t. It’s time for a change.

People find themselves under this line for an innumerable amount of reasons. Some of these causes are under one's control and others are greater factors beyond an individual's power. Poverty has been a huge problem in the United States and all around the world. According to the United States Bureau of the Census, in 2012, over 46 million people were living in poverty in the United States. Poverty rate has remained at high level throughout the years. As high as 15% of the people living in the United States is living in poverty. Poverty mostly targeted racial and ethnic minorities, women, children and single parent families.

Poverty is “the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor” (Dictionary.com, 2017). Based off this definition poverty is a condition that can cause a cascade of cause and effect actions that is detrimental to families and individuals both physically and mentally. Haan, Kaplan, & Camacho (2017) completed a study on the correlation between social and economic status and health in adults in Oakland, CA. They found that the lower the socioeconomic class the higher incidents of diseases and deaths related to chronic diseases (p.1161-1162). Just being without money or little money was not the only indication of health indication, a person living in an area with higher poverty issues

Poverty can lead to serious effects. Children who grow up in poverty are likely to have frequent health problems than the children who grow in better financial circumstances. For example, infants who are born into poverty have a low birth weight, and they grow up with mental or physical disabilities. Not only are they sick, but they are most likely to die before their first birthday. Children who are raised in poverty might miss school often because of their illnesses, and they have a much higher accident rate than the other children. Nearly a billion of the world’s population can’t read nor write. Poor families experience stress much more than a normal family does. They are more likely to be exposed to negative events such as illness, job loss, death of a family member, and depression. Homelessness is another effect of poverty. Homeless children are less likely to receive proper nutrition, protection and they experience more health problems. Around 1.4 million children die each year from lack of access to safe and clean water and proper nutrition. Homeless women experience a high rate of low birth weight infants as well as miscarriages. Families who do not have homes receive much more stress than other families. They also have disruption in school, work, friendships, and family relationships. There are other effects of poverty such as drug abuse and addiction, child and woman abuse, debts pressure, and increase in crimes.

One day, my family and I were travelling in our expensive car, fully covered from head to toe in woolens as it was the winter season. The heater in the car was on and I was nicely sipping my warm coffee, headphones in my ears and a book in my hand. As we passed by a village, I saw a slum area. The people were barely clothed and small children were running around naked. They had no proper shelter-only thatched roofs and plastic put together made a 10x10 feet house approximately, if you would call it a house, in which a total of around 12 people lived. I felt very sad looking at their situation. They were so poor, so helpless. Then, questions arose in my mind- why they are so poor. How far is it appropriate to blame these poor people for their own predicament? Have they been lazy, made poor decisions, and been solely responsible for their plight? What about their governments? Why do I have so much and they don’t even have money to clothe themselves? To find the answer to my questions, I decided to investigate ‘Poverty’ and things related to it.

The questions of whether poverty is the result of institution or perhaps a byproduct of “laws of nature” is quite a complex one. Backers of both arguments have extensively argued for their respective stance on the matter. Further complications arise from the fact that not all the backers agree on what constitutes certain concepts of interests, such as happiness. Defining a cutoff point for poverty throughout a country, and even more so, in the world also challenges…. Additionally, the same people might not possess complete information due to various circumstances. Nevertheless, they can still have valid and useful information which could be improved upon to investigate the question of the root of poverty.
