Unease. Thrilling. Surprise. These are simply three feelings tossed at the reader in a one-page story. Short-short stories often have the effect of making the reader feel uneasy. When stories are short, a writer tends to jump directly into the story with something interesting or alarming to grab the reader’s attention. Quite often, the more uneasy the writing, the more it leaves an effect on the reader. Sudden Fiction is a book filled with a collection of short stories from different authors; the maximum length of a story is three pages long. This not only causes the reader to feel ???? with the content, but also uncomfortable with the title of the literary work. Without a doubt, the short story that made me feel the most uneasy was “Reading the Paper”. On the other hand, the story that I felt more comfortable reading was “The Reunion”.
First of all, “Reading the Newspaper” is about a women’s average day, or at least it seems to be average from the way the writer portrays it. When she is talking to several people about the death of her family members, who had died the previous night, she is washing the blood stains out while doing her the laundry. This becomes shocking to a reader to read that someone is functioning as if something horrific did not happen. Typically, someone who has lost their family members, like this character, would not be in the right state of mind to do her laundry. One could assume that she is clearly traumatized. In addition to that, another

Authors often write literature to have an emotional impact on the reader. These effects vary from work to work, and they may include happiness, sorrow, anger, or shock. Even authors who try to achieve the same effect may go about it in very different ways. This paper discusses three short stories written to shock the reader, but each uses a different method to achieve its effect. While Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" uses a sudden shift in plot at the end of a short narrative, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" gives hints throughout the story preparing the reader for a shocking ending; in contrast, Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper"
New Sudden Fiction edited by Robert Shapard and James Thomas – A short story collection of extremely small fiction. The longest story in the book is 6 pages, I think. Average story length is 3-4 pages. These pieces are like literary potato chips, satisfying and addictive. You’ll want to read just one more every time you pick up the book.
On an early Monday morning the sun rises over a small house located in a quiet town by the name of Old City of Rhoads in Greece. When the sun hits the small house, the house looks even smaller and the shadow of the house outlines the old looking torn apart boards holding the roof together. Even though this house looks old and small everyone in the town knows the story behind the man who used to live there, and the family who lives there now. The man who build and used to live in the house went by the name of Floyd Blackwood. Floyd was a master fisher man and would bring food to the town for family’s to buy and eat, because the town of Old City of Rhoads has always had a shortage of livestock. Floyd was basically a hero. He would spend his nights fishing, and his days building a house for him, his wife, and son. One day Floyd finished the house. And while his wife and son were settling in he decided to go fishing on his boat. Floyd went out to sea and started fishing but, before he could even realize how late it was and turn around he was trapped in a sea storm and did not make it out alive. The small house is now owned by Floyd’s wife, violet who lives with her now 17- year old son John.
Every story must start somewhere, but not every story has to have a complete ending, or even a clear one. With the development of the short story, the variation between short story endings has gradually increased as time has gone on, like the difference between a final ending in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” or John Cheever’s “The Swimmer.” However, the endings of some short stories also depend on the style of how the story is written, like Amy Tan’s “Two Kinds,” which is a part of a larger novel, and Kate Chopin’s “The Blind Man,” which is a new branch of short fiction writing called microfiction. The ending also comes about based on the subject matter found in the story. For example, Tan is a second-generation Chinese-American like her character, June, in “Two Kinds.” Cheever lived through the Great Depression, and his family went through a similar fall from grace like his character Neddy did in “The Swimmer.” They say to write what you know, and these authors come to their endings through their own experiences and the type of style that they write in.
Supper was always at six o’clock. Our one meal of the day, the highlight of our day. One stale slice of bread and one small pot of cold rice some suspected wasn’t even rice. A cup of water was also allowed to aid in washing down the miniscule amount of putrid food. Drinking the water thought could cause typhus. Supper was never a sufficient amount of food but it kept us breathing and denied us the energy we needed to attempt or even plan an escape. That was all the guards really wanted. Supper lasted around fifteen minutes although no one had a watch to properly time it. No one even knew what month it was; we just guessed it was autumn.
Having read many short stories in the past helps you assume the endings of some stories, before reaching the end. Some endings are surprising, which makes you want more, while others seem to be boring. Some endings don’t satisfy the readers and keeps them hanging, or guessing. Endings in stories are very important; they could make a book or break it. Two short stories that I have read recently where there is an ending twist are, “After Twenty Years” and “A Sound of Thunder.” Both stories include a surprise, but each surprise ending is different from the other. Each of the short stories endings had a different impact to me as a reader.

“With the help of Montague La-Rose, I opened a doorway. But there were consequences. Upon entering, the entity’s memory—Rayne’s memory—was wiped clean. It was a dangerous but necessary compromise. To win this war, we need both Rayne Volpi and Montague La-Rose to end the Nekrums’ madness. I already sent for Montague,” Burton said.
Lina Vilkas is like any other any other fifteen-year-old Lithuania girl. She enjoys painting, drawing and she gets crushes on boys. Until one night in June of 1941 Soviet secret police officers barge into Lina’s home and she gets arrested alongside her mother, Elena, and ten-year-old brother, Jonas tears her family from the comfortable life they've known. Her father Kostas has been arrested earlier, and they don’t know where he is. The family is given a small amount of time to pack all of their belongings before loaded onto a bus full of other arrested civilians. They are then ordered onto trains and placed there for six weeks with very little food to eat. With them are school teachers, librarians, stamp collectors, and even a young mother, Ona and her newborn child. Lina meets a handsome boy her age on the train named Andrius. Though, in the beginning, she has a rocky relationship with him over time they develop feelings for each other. Lina and Jonas go looking for their father and soon find him in another train car, and he gives them some words of encouragement. They are then separated, and Lina, Jonas, and Elena, including the rest of their train car, end up in Siberia, where the NKVD try to sell them to local villagers as slaves. As they are not bought, they are instead brought to a labour camp where they’re instructed to do backbreaking work and in return only receiving three hundred grams of bread a day. The Vilkases are demanded to live in a tiny shack with an
It was like any other day for me,birds were chirping, grass was growing and shadows were vandalizing property and wreaking havoc on the world.(22.) How all of this monstrosity happened is a long story so pull up a chair and listen.I’m Jack Jone and I was at a friend’s birthday party for a friend whose name I can’t say because he will be hunted down by the shadows. We had just finished the cake and had just started playing hide and seek. The birthday boy was the seeker and I was the hider(1.).”You should count to 10 and count very slowly,” I told him and he soon starts counting aloud”1,2,3…..” He counted. He was counting fast not slowly but that didn’t matter to the others, they were as fast as ninjas in the dead of night. I try to hide with one of them but she kicks me out of her hiding spot.”4,5,6…..” he still was counting down and I had to find a hiding spot quick”the forest is a really good spot” I thought to myself.I ran into the forest so fast all I heard as I was running was the fading sound of him counting”7,8,9,10 ready or not here I come” and hearing the screams of children being found and me as the kid always wanting to win ran farther and faster into the forest until I tripped on a root of a tree and phased through the ground into a hallowed cave.”SPLASH!!!” that was the sound I made when I landed on the water and the feeling of my body being slammed on water made my back feel like I broke my spine but with little energy and drowning because not being able to or
