The American Civil War began April 12, 1861. This was a war fought between the United States of America and the new Confederate States of America. The Confederate States of American was a group of 11 states that seceded from the Union between 1860-1861, and formed their own country in order to protect the institution of slavery. Slavery was the “law of the land” until the early 19th century. Slaves were used as farm laborers and formed the background of the Southern economy. While the North on the other hand was an industrial economy and did not heavily rely on agriculture. Shortly after Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, November 6, 1860, the southern states had begun to secede from the Union. Recognized for his eloquent condemnations of slavery in Senate race 2 years prior to his election. Even though Lincoln was not an abolitionist, he believed African Americans should have the same basic human rights as the white people. He believed a house divided against itself could not stand, and the states could not be half slave, and have free. For the South, this meant that Lincoln would not allow the spread of slavery into the Union. The southern states wanted to preserve their way of life, so they seceded from the Union.
South Carolina was the first to secede on December 20, 1860. Overtime, about the course of 6 months, the other 10 states seceded from the Union. February of 1861, a new nation, the Confederate States of America was formed. President
