The American Civil War was a battle that took place between the Union and Confederates in the early 1860s. The war started when Confederates attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina right after Abraham Lincoln was elected. To many peoples surprise the war lasted four long years with just under one million deaths. The question that has been debated by many people throughout history is what caused the Civil War. There have been many ideas of why it occurred but the two main ones that have been discussed are slavery and tariffs. When looking at slavery for many years it had been a debated topic of whether or not slaves should be emancipated. The north was in favor of freeing the slaves were as the south wanted to keep them. After the election of 1960 Abraham was elected to be president which worried a lot of people in the south about them keeping their slaves. In the aftermath of the election seven states succeeded from the union to create the Confederate States of America. It then grew to 11 with Missouri and Kentucky as well as two other states. Slavery is something that really started to grow especially after the invention of the cotton gin. Initially the South’s greatest cash crop was tobacco however lots of their fields were depleted and demanded was lessened do to a better product being produced in the Caribbean. This lead the way for cotton which only blew up more one the gin was invented. This allowed slaves to pick out the seeds in cotton at a much faster rate.
