Katniss Everdeen’s life changes in a blink of an eye after a major event happens. The Hunger Games is a very competitive fight to the death between people from all 12 districts. Two names of children from the ages 12-17, get called from each district at the reaping and then all tributes face off against one another until only one remains.The powerful Capitol is in charge of this event and likes to place challenges throughout the games to provide action for the viewers back home. 16 year old Katniss Everdeen looks to be the second winner from district 12. The young teenager has a tough life back home and uses what she has to help her and her family survive. Katniss is caring, reliable, and resourceful and looks to take these 3 main traits into the games to help her succeed. In Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen plays a huge role in not only her success in the 74th Hunger Games, but also Peeta Mellark's. Katniss Everdeen puts others needs in front of her own. This caring, heartwarming character will do anything she needs to do to reduce the risk of danger of her close friends and family. Katniss shows this by volunteering for her 12 year old little sister. Katniss, who is much older and wiser, will have a way better chance at having success in the games. Without having volunteered, district 12’s chances of winning would not be very good. Throughout the games she becomes allies with a sweet little girl named Rue.
