Have you at any point had a goal in mind, a great number of people have had a defined goal set. Possibly once your goal was to learn the sign language. Yet, have you at any point ever figured how you would achieve those goals and conquer the obstacles that accompany that goal? What traits would you require? Your personal traits matter when it comes to achieving success. The three most imperative attributes to accomplish an objective are determination, diligent work, and courageousness. These attributes are shown by the characters Annie Johnson, Ernesto Galarza, and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, all through their stories. Determination, individuals like Annie Johnson have determination and never abandon their objectives, and diligently pursue them. …show more content…
In paragraph 13 in “Barrio Boy” it states, “The Korean, Portuguese, Italian, and Polish first graders had similar moments of glory, no less shining than mine today I conquered “butterfly,” which I had been persistently pronouncing and standard Spanish as boo-ter-flee. “Children,” Miss Ryan called for attention. “Ernesto has learned how to pronounce butterfly!” And I proved it with a perfect imitation of Miss Ryan.” Then later on in paragraph 14 in “Barrio Boy” it affirms, “Like Ito and several other first graders who did not know English, I received private lessons from Miss Ryan in the closet, ... coaching me out of my phonetic ruts in words like pasture, bow-wow-wow, hay, and pretty, which to my Mexican ear had so many unnecessary sounds and letters. She made me watch her lips and then close my eyes as she repeated the words I found hard to read.” Diligent work is a standout amongst the most capable tools that a man can have. Diligent work has appeared all through the story by Ernesto Galarza, when it went to the English dialect he never backed down the obstacles that were impeding his objective and rather strived to defeat every obstacle. Ernesto is an essential case of why diligent work can enable you to accomplish your objective. Another trait that helps you reach or get closer to your goal is courageousness, though it may not seem like it courageousness is a key trait to reaching your goal.
Firstly, Ernesto Galarza in the non-fiction text, Barrio Boy, written by Ernesto Galarza, is motivated by his love for Miss Ryan to learn English. Ernesto came from Mexico to learn English at Lincoln School in California where Miss Ryan was his teacher. In paragraph 17, Ernesto informs the reader, “It was easy for me to feel that becoming a proud American, as she said we should, did not mean feeling ashamed of being a Mexican.” Galaza was relieved that becoming an American and learning English did not mean that he had to forget about his Mexican heritage. Furthermore, Ernesto states, “The main reason I was graduated with honors from the first grade was that I
In the story Barrio Boy Ernesto Galarza had gone to a new school and he was very nervous by his actions. In the text it states “ Half of the block was occupied by the Lincoln School”. Ernesto did not know how to speak english when he had gotten to that school that he did not know how to pronounce butterfly. According to the text it states “The day I conquered “butterfly” which I had been persistently pronouncing in standard Spanish as boo-ter-flee. What Ernesto learned was how that not everyone in his class knew english and he learned to speak english this is what Ernesto learned.
Annie was very successful in her life. The story, "New Directions", by Maya Angelou, it states that Annie did many things for her family. She was successful by working hard at night, walked everywhere so she could sell pies and earn money, and making a store where people could buy her items.
In “Work” by Dennis Johnson, it is a story about the author and his friend, Wayne, trying to gain money by doing a rescue job. However, it turns out that the Wayne brought the author to Wayne’s house and his wife. I did not like the story; however, some of the contexts of the story can help with writing my own story. The story has a characterization of Wayne through dialogue. For example, the narrator and Wayne were drinking at the Vine and Wayne said “’How would you feel about making some money’? he asked me… ‘I decided’ he said, ‘in my mind, to take some money…’ ‘Come with me,’ he begged” (Johnson 56). Through the dialogue, Wayne is the type of person that decides/ take leadership in their jobs. The narrator just follows what Wayne says.
dedication and diligence she took in being a good student from elementary through high school.
My top strength identified was the Achiever theme. Achiever describes the need for constant achievement. Achievers have the capacity and the drive to keep taking on new challenges and strive toward new goals (Rath, 2007). This description is accurate in that I enjoy a new challenge and like to keep busy working towards anything with some sort of successful outcome. I welcome the opportunity to do something better, more perfectly, or more complete which motivates me to a higher level (Rath, 2007).
I have always admired those who work very hard and are persistent in any area of their lives, especially when it comes to improving themselves whether it be physically or mentally. Because hard work and dedication are traits that I have always valued, I have tried to create a strong drive towards my goals while preserving who I am and what I believe. Malcolm Gladwell took this quote from an old Chinese proverb while discussing what exactly makes people successful. In this portion of his book, he writes about the value of hard work and accountability. Hard work does not work if it only happens every once in a while or only when one
Dorothy Allison's voice is one of authenticity, experience, and wisdom. This is apparent in her recounts of her mother's death and rape by her abusive stepfather as a child. She uses her storytelling as a way of sorting out her inner demons and memories of her broken life, “the [story] I wish I could make you hear,” as she says, because “the need to tell [her] story was terrible and persistent, and [she] needed to say it bluntly and cruelly, to use all those words, those old awful tearing words” (39, 42). She strives to get to the root of her own unresolved issues and, by her own admission, “[works] to make you believe [her]”:
Ernesto spoke Spanish but had to transfer to a school that speaks English. He was afraid he wouldn't fit in. He did get help from is teacher, Ms. Ryan, as a result Ernesto graduated first grade knowing how to say many words like butterfly in English.
Missionary Library’s were finally built in Kenya. John took advantage of the free education and spent hours reading there. A problem he faced however was getting inside. He was so determined he waited in line for 2 hours. The library was so packed that each school had a specific day to come in. John has also got up before dawn just to do get inside before the rest of his school could. That’s what I call determination.
Abraham Lincoln was was a great example of being determined. Walt Whitman wrote and poem “O Captain! My Captain”, an allegory. It talked about Lincoln being a captain of America a ship. ln this poem the captain died and was not able to see the outcome of what he did. The hard trip was over “the ship was weather’d every rack, the prize we sought was won” (SB, pg.69)this shows that Lincoln was determined to hold America together and he did. I would have been very hard to hold America together but Lincoln was determined and he was able to accomplish keeping America together. Another example of someone who is determined and rises over challenges is Stephanie Nelson. Stephanie burnt 80% of her body in a plane crash. This trail was very hard for her but she decided to have a positive attitude and have her challenges make her strong. She blogs about overcoming challenges. My dad is a great example to me of being determined and rising above challenges. He is a great example to me because we both have dyslexia. Because of dyslexia it is hard to do well on tests, even though he has dyslexia he tries even harder and keeps going even when he has to take tests many times for work. Being determined through trials is an amazing trait of a
Annie Dillard arose from her tent that rested in the Ecuadorian jungle. She was outnumbered by six men to one female on her morning journey, as she and her six male escorts reached Providence Village. The first view of excitement to capture her attention was a dwarf size, frail frame fawn roped to a tree near a thatched roof hut. This was symbolic of the stability of a vicious pit bulldog that would be chained to a six-foot chain length fence, back home in my neighborhood. One could only imagine the gruesome details of the helpless fawn that Dillard was describing. This fawn had been captured and roped to a tree. If this was not humiliating enough, the agony continued, the fawn twisted his limp bloody frail body as if he was interacting
With in my family tree there is one characteristic that catches my eye, perseverance.“With perseverance and determination anything is possible”( Kelly Landolfi ). Even though my family is small, most of them have the trait of perseverance including my mom, Kelly, my dad, Louis my grandpa and last but definitely not least Kylie, me. Determination means to,... “continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success.”
Some people believe that talent and a winning attitude are all you need in order to succeed in your endeavors, but a winning attitude means having determination, which many people lack. As seen on wisdomforthesoul.org, “Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.” Determination is an important factor in the overall success or failure of a person’s efforts. Unfortunately, determination is not something that comes easy to the majority of people. To be truly determined, a person must first be passionate about what they’re doing. Passion, however, is only the first step towards resolution and determination. One must have a clear goal in mind, and be willing to do anything to achieve said goal. Once they have set
The short story is a concise form of narrative prose that is usually simpler and more direct compared to longer works of fiction such as novels. Therefore, because of their short length, short stories rely on many forms of literary devices to convey the idea of a uniform theme seen throughout the script. This theme is illustrated by using characteristics that are developed throughout the story such as, plot, setting and characters. The three main components are developed throughout the story in order to guide the reader to the underlying theme, which is necessary as a short story lacking a theme also lacks meaning or purpose.
