The professional football player and soldier, Pat Tillman, was born on November 6, 1976, in Fremont, California. As Tillman was attending Leland High School, he was very talented in football, and led his team to a Central Coast Division I Football Championship. After high school, Tillman moved on to playing at Arizona State University to win many awards, and get an undefeated season. Following his college career, Tillman was drafted to the Arizona Cardinals. Tillman remained selfless, determined, and loyal throughout his life to everyone around him, which is why we remember him today. Pat Tillman carried many characteristics that made him who he was, but his selflessness was the most apparent characteristic about him. Tillman’s selflessness become apparent when he threw away a multi-million dollar contract in the NFL just to serve for his country in the army. This type of commitment for the country is hard to find in other people. Another example that shows Tillman’s selflessness was after a football game when he was asked what his thoughts were on the game. He replied saying, “I didn’t play particularly well. The team played great.” This shows how Tillman really wasn’t playing for the fame, or publicity, and credited his team before himself. One last example of how selfless Tillman was selfless was when he never took interviews with news reporters after he made the decision to join the army. This shows how Tillman never wanted any attention after his decision, and just

Football was and is a very popular sport in America and has always been a favorite. Erik Fisher plays football because he is great at the sport, hence page 27, “Dad had brought Erik to meet Coach Warner earlier in the summer. Dad had knelt down and held the ball for Erik to drill fifty-yard field goals, one after another, while according to Dad, the Coach’s jaw had dropped lower and lower.” But, Erik played football primarily for and because of the fame. He had never cared about whether he had to hurt someone in order reach the top of the “Erik Fisher Football Dream”. On September 5 (pages 50-94), when Mike Costello dies of lightning, Paul finds Erik and Arthur laughing about how Mike’s hair was singed off. Paul was disgusted. Though Erik and Arthur didn’t kill Mike, their laughter reflects their inner evil and selfish selves. Paul then reflects on his own self and decides to walk a path of truth, unlike Erik. In continuation, Ray Lewis had once said, “Don't walk through life just playing football. Don't walk through life just being an athlete. Athletics will fade. Character and integrity and really making an impact on someone's life, that's the ultimate vision, that's the ultimate goal-bottom line.” Erik never had any character or integrity, whether he played sports or not. On the other hand, Paul did have character and integrity. Paul noticed Erik’s evil actions to get higher and higher up the Erik Fisher Football
The Emmett Till murder shined a light on the horrors of segregation and racism on the United States. Emmett Till, a young Chicago teenager, was visiting family in Mississippi during the month of August in 1955, but he was entering a state that was far more different than his hometown. Dominated by segregation, Mississippi enforced a strict leash on its African American population. After apparently flirting with a white woman, which was deeply frowned upon at this time in history, young Till was brutally murdered. Emmett Till’s murder became an icon for the Civil Rights Movement, and it helped start the demand of equal rights for all nationalities and races in the United States.
Tom Brady was able to go from being an underdog to a champion, become the greatest quarterback to ever live, get past allegations, and become an influence in the 21st century. He was unwanted his whole life, but made his way up to the NFL. Everyone was skeptical of his abilities and if he really cheated, but through all of that he persevered. This is why Tom Brady was an influence in the 21st century not just for athletes but
Pat Tillman is remembered as a man with many amazing qualities, but I think the one he remembered most for is his determination. He showed this even when he was just a high school freshman because after he was cut from the team, he said he would play and he didn’t want to just play baseball and he didn’t. He ended up playing on the varsity football team for his high school. He also showed that he was determined when anyone said he couldn’t do something or he shouldn’t do something, he did it anyway and continued to do what he wanted. Tillman, even playing football, focussed on his education because he wanted to graduate and ended up
Till was staying with his family (Uncle) in Money, Mississippi from, Chicago. His mother Mamie Till and Till lived in a black neighborhood and attended McCosh Grammar School.
Pat Tillman had a stronger work ethic than most everyone. Tillman showed his hard work in every aspect of his life on the fiend and off he had a 3.5 or higher GPA all threw high school. When Pat was a 8th grader he tried out for the varsity baseball team, he didn't make the team also he decided to mainly focus on football. Everyone told him that he wasn't big enough or good enough to play football but he pushed himself and worked harder than everyone to get where he wanted to go. In Pats senior year of college he had NFL scouts come to one of the practices and he worked so hard that he would let the scouts leave until he completed the drill to the best of his abilities. Pat was the 226th pick of the draft and he proved to be the best safely

Walter Payton’s young life was full of disasters and struggles. It all started when Payton was a young kid growing up in Columbia, Mississippi. He was born july 25th, 1954. (Pearlman #). Walter Payton’s kindness deserves some appreciation. In the article titled “Walter Payton Charity Work”, the author Don Yaeger states, “Gifts on Christmas for abused and neglected children may not seem like a lot, but in terms of establishing self-worth, confidence, and a feeling of pride, I believe it may mean everything.” (Walter Payton Charity Work). Every year, Walter Payton dressed up like Santa Claus and gave presents to unlucky kids. This shows his kindness because it is how he does it. The quote talks about how he handed out the presents with confidence and pride. Walter knew what he was doing and he knew that it was the right
Ray Lewis was named one of the players in NFL history, although life for has not been a silver platter. Throughout his upbringing, he grew up in a single parent home with five siblings. His dad was in and out his life, abusing and disrespecting his mother. Later his family would suffer with financial problems. This lead to his family being split, he was forced to move with his grandparents. Throughout his circumstances, he could have used all of these things as excuses to quit. Instead he lights a fire in his in his heart and uses

On August 28th, 1955. A young, African American, fourteen year old boy, Emmett Louis “Bobo” Till, was murdered in Money, Mississippi after flirting with a white woman (“Emmett Till”, 2014). Emmett Till’s story brought attention to the racism still prevalent in the south in 1955, even after attempts nationwide to desegregate and become equal. Emmett’s harsh murder and unfair trial brought light into the darkness and inequality that dominated the south during the civil rights movement. Emmett’s life was proof that African American’s were equal to whites and that all people were capable of becoming educated and successful even through difficulties. Emmett’s death had an even greater impact, providing a story and a face to the unfair treatment
In addition, athletes in the past have been a positive role model for athletes and young people, today. Just like President Barack Obama recently said about Tommie Smith and John Carlos holding black fists up during the award ceremony, “What Tommie Smith and John Carlos did may have been controversial at the time, but it created opportunity for future generations.” This means that the athletes, in the past, that spoke out against their disbeliefs, set an example for present athletes, and how to get their point across, but at the same time being a role model for young people. Furthermore, since athletes are already on a bigger stage, when they speak out, they are allowing us, as a nation, to see our flaws, so we can unite together and change it. When Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem, it was part of the Black Lives Matter movement, and it helped our nation come together to find a solution. By doing this, our
