People can have a variety of different personalities. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a novel containing love, humor, as well as drama, and is written by Harper Lee. The novel’s narrator and protagonist is Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. Throughout the novel, Scout learns about racism and to always keep her head high. Scout’s different features create her unique character and make her stand out from the other kids in Maycomb. She’s a tomboy, she’s smart for her age, and she’s tough, but loving. Firstly, Scout’s appearance plays a huge role in her character. She’s a tomboy. Another person who doesn’t like the fact that Scout wears overalls is Mrs. Dubose, as she said, “What are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole, young lady(pg.135)!” Despite the fact that some people don’t like the way she dresses or how she acts like a tomboy, she is not really bothered by it and she’s not planning on changing how she is. Scout doesn’t act like a girl, but more of a tomboy. In addition, Scout is also quite smart for her age. She was the only one who was literate in her class when she went to school, so she was advance. On Scout’s first day of school, her teacher, Miss Caroline, made her read most of “My First Reader”,”she discovered that I was literate and looked at me [Scout] with more than faint distate (pg.22).” Miss Caroline didn’t really like how she could already real so well, and told Scout to tell Atticus to stop teaching her to read. However, Atticus didn’t even teach her, but just read to her. Scout claims that she would just stare in her memory at the articles and stories Atticus reads.
