Have you ever gone to a sleepover or camp where you went a couple days without your family? Imagine not seeing your family for months, or years, or ever. Imagine if you didn’t even know if your parents were alive. This is a similar situation that Salva, a young boy in A Long Walk to Water, has to go through. Salva isn’t only separated from family forever, but he has to journey through Africa with little food and water, specifically food. Luckily for Salva, he finds his Uncle, Jewiir. He joins the group that Salva traveled in, and marked himself as a leader to the others. While learning about the journeys of both characters, many traits are exhibited. This comes up in the story when Salva first finds his Uncle Jewiir. “As they began walking, Salva saw that Uncle had a gun - a rifle that he carried on a strap over one shoulder. Already Salva could tell that because of his army experience and because he had a gun, Uncle was seen by the group as a kind of leader.” Jewiir had joined the group three weeks earlier, and in the few minutes that the two were together, Jewiir was a conspicuous leader. The main thing that presented himself this way was a gun, that showed he was stronger and more powerful than the rest. One more piece of evidence is,”Are you with the rebels?’ the man asked. ‘No,’ Uncle answered. ‘Where have you come from? Where are you going?’ ‘We are west of the Nile,’ Uncle said, ‘We are going to Itang, to the refugee camp.” In this text, three unknown men come from the desert. When they come, Uncle Jewiir steps up and speaks, like the leader of the group. Anyone could have spoken, but everyone else was scared and did not speak, because they did not know these foreign people. Uncle had led this group through the worst of times, but unfortunately, that ended in Salva’s Uncle getting shot, and now no one was leading Salva’s group. To sum it up, Uncle Jewiir is 100% a leader to the reader, and the other characters in the book.
