Individuals who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are taught gender is an essential characteristic of an individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. (The Family Proclamation to the World) American society teaches through media, that males are to be aggressive, and females are to be submissive. Society teaches individuals to stuff males and females into confining and suppressive boxes, where males are meant to be domineering and females are sexual objects and marriage is disposable. It’s such a stark contrast the difference between how those of the faithful LDS families are raised when compared to those who have been integrated into the beliefs of society. Children who are raised to view society as the correct way, are taken into a highly stereotypical, and deceptive world.
American society views the acceptable man as being controlling and domineering, whereas the acceptable and desirable woman’s purpose is to cater to the man, physically and sexually. Females are nearly always stripped down (often literally) to what lies at their core, their essential, biological womanliness, their essential subordinate position to man.” (Byerly, Carolyn, Ross 26) When women are portrayed in such a way, individuals begin to be dissatisfied with themselves, as well as with the ones they are intimate with, comparing them to the impossible standards of society.
