George Tenet was the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1997-2004. He was good at what he did; he was so good that he was asked to stay on as the Director of the CIA when President Bush won the Presidency. The one thing Tenet experienced with the Bush administration that he did not experience with the Clinton Administration is he became part of the President’s inner circle. Once George Tenet experienced the inner circle, he no longer was able to focus on rebuilding the agency (Stillman 2000). In George Tenet and the Last Great Days of the CIA, Richard White, Jr. gives us the rise and fall of the CIA under CIA Director George Tenet.
Hello, Dominique. I’ve enjoyed reading your post. Like you said prevent of inside threat is one of ways to conduct strategic counter intelligence. As we know, cyber security is crucial to protecting US computers, networks, programs and data unauthorized access. There are many cases that our government data has been stolen by the hackers from foreign entities including 4 million federal employee records. However, we can’t rule out the inside threats. There are so many spying cases from the insider whom worked either for foreign governments or businesses. These inside threats were not unnoticed for months and sometimes years and it caused great damage to US interests. Therefore, pursue of the real creation of a discipline in strategic counterintelligence
out sooner and not sit in Guantanamo for years just because they fit a certain profile.
In 1919, the Supreme Court had justified the cause of “clear and present danger”. This was exercised relating to Charles Schenck releasing thousands of flyers to American servicemen recently drafted to fight in World War I. The flyers described the draft as being "involuntary servitude". The flyer states that the government had no right to send American citizens to other countries to kill people.
Today, electronic surveillance remains one of the most effective tools the United States has to protect against foreign powers and groups seeking to inflict harm on the nation, but it does not go without a few possessing a few negative aspects either. Electronic surveillance of foreign intelligence has likely saved the lives of many innocent people through prevention of potential acts of aggression towards the United States. There are many pros to the actions authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) pertaining to electronic surveillance, but there are also cons. Looking at both the pros and cons of electronic surveillance is important in understanding the overall effectiveness of FISA. [1]
The CIA, otherwise known as the Central Intelligence Agency, is a federal agency that is independent and has the responsibilities of providing the country of the United States with national security intelligence. The CIA is in charge of gathering information that is going on from other countries in order to help our own national security to become stronger, and to be able to protect the citizens of the United States better. However, what happens when the CIA tries to protect it’s citizens by screwing over other countries? What happens when the CIA is responsible for destroying other countries’ governments or placing leaders where we do not belong as a country to try and control politics that we should not even be involving ourselves in. While the CIA is meant to have good intentions for providing our country with national security, a lot of times the United States is responsible for meddling in affairs we never belonged in which cause harm, devastation, or death to the countries we force ourselves upon.
In response to what marked the United States forever, the September 11 attacks, the federal government procreated what is known as The Department of Homeland Security. The main responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security consisted of having to protect the territory of the United States and protectorates from and responding to terrorist attacks, man-made accidents, and natural disasters. In another words, the existence of the Department of Homeland Security is to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards. Though many different government agencies see and define Homeland Security accordingly to their protocol, the National Strategy for the Department of Homeland Security was able to
As a senate select committee on intelligence member, you are likely aware of the nsa’s information and intelligence program put in place in place a short time after the 9/11 attacks. Despite laws against it, the nsa took president Bush’s authorization to target people with known ties to terrorism as authorization to intercept phone calls and emails without any warrant. I believe this practice is dangerous and unconstitutional. It is obviously unconstitutional because it violates the fourth amendment.
When the topic of Homeland Security is introduced, the first thought that comes to mind is either 9/11 or the Transportation Security Administration, TSA for short. No matter the reference, most Americans know that Homeland Security has something to do with Terrorism. Until an actual attack occurs, or election season begins, the average person may never give any thought or credit to the Department of Homeland Security. Homeland Security goes far beyond terrorism and terrorism prevention. Homeland Security does not just encompass holding individuals up at airports for multiple hours to intentionally hinder passengers from catching their flight out of the Caribbean. Homeland Security is multiple levels of legislation; law and policy to prevent
The torture of captured suspects is contrarian to the values of the American legal system because generally captured suspects are supposed to entitled to due process, according to Amendment V of the United States Constitution: “no person shall be . . . deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.” Guantanamo Bay”. Terrorist which are held captive by the American government are presumed guilty but are not being given a fair chance to seek representation in a court of law or have fall range access to their attorneys once they find themselves in a conflict. In my opinion, terrorists should have the opportunity to have their cases reviewed and be given a fighting chance instead of being held for an indefinite amount of time without due process or trial. The U.S
Torturing someone who is of a great threat to society and national security and possibly containing valuable information, will serve as beneficially to more lives as opposed to one life who has less than desirable intentions for innocent people. The bomber will also have had a say in the matter, they would have had a choice and the opportunity to cooperate and save those lives and avoiding torture. They have the opportunity to save themselves time, pain, loss of dignity and even potentially make allies. However, if they choose not to it is ultimately their will to endure this torture which inevitably would have resulted with the same extraction of information just at a much longer time period. Overall, while torture is by no doubt inhumane it is deemed necessary when the situation at hand concerns a complex issue of people’s lives which are in
Stan Smith, who works for the CIA and is constantly on the alert for terrorist activity, will go to extremes to protect his beloved America from harm. Stan, Stan's wife and teenage children, the Smith household has two unusual members. There's Roger, the sarcastic space alien who rescued Stan from Area 51 who can't leave the house due to that, and therefore, has been reduced to drinking wine and smoking cigarettes, and Klaus, a lascivious, German-speaking goldfish; the result of a CIA experiment gone seriously wrong where the CIA tried to give a fish a German man's brain. Stan's son is a nerdy teenager who tries to be cool.
Many of the NSA’s goals have been completely contradicted by the leaked files. Their first goal, to protect privacy rights, was a complete joke. The Fourth amendment states that there should be no unreasonable searches or seizures. Collecting people’s metadata that isn’t public violates this right, not achieving their first goal. Their second goal, protecting vital networks, is also ambiguous. Since the NSA uses the zero day exploits, and since the companies they get the exploits from sell them, The NSA is letting the hacks be used. Another problem with this statement is that it says “vital networks”. How would US citizens know what the NSA considers vital. Were Hillary Clinton, the secretary of state’s emails not vital enough to protect? There
What the government wants to do is put as many drones in the air in order to stay vigilant against dangerous individuals, since they suspect that anyone can be a criminal. This evidence is important because it contains a written statement that says the government is willing to get drones in the air, and they don’t care if people don’t feel like they have privacy out on the streets. The author can be trusted because they got written evidence from a government official about how they want drones in the air, and there are not many authors like that. Government spying is a waste of time since everyone is a target. From Opposing Viewpoints, an article was created to talk about how drones are either a safety benefit, or a privacy threat. In this
