Introduction: The most obvious changes that occur are those that can be seen. The coat color of animals is the first thing that most people notice. This means that studying genes that are related to changes in coat color are easy to observe. One such situation is somatic mosaicism. Somatic mosaicism is a byproduct of transgenetic technologies in which the introduction of an alteration to the genetic code does not occur until later in development. Transgenic animals are animals that have had genes not normally ascribed to them added to their genome by artificial means. Due our inability to control the location and amount of DNA introduced to the genome side effects are expected. These are caused by incomplete transgenesis of the animal and can mean a lessened chance of transfer of the entire transgenetic gene. Somatic mosaicism is studied in mice and used to study early embryo development by using many different methods to induce somatic mosaicism to change the coat colors of the mice. This paper seeks to discuss the various ways that somatic mosaicism occurs and case studies applied to each technology. Somatic cells are cells that are not gametes; for example, your heart, blood, muscle, and skin cells are all considered somatic cells.
