“By this knight was free-giving and friendliness first before all, and chastity and chivalry ever changeless and straight, and piety surpassing all points: these perfect five were hasped upon him harder than on any man else,” claimed the writer of Gawain and the Green Knight. These values are not only the major values of chivalry, they are important Christian values. By following these values, one often makes moral decisions and gains salvation. At a time when Paganism was moving out and Christianity was moving in, these values were a new basis of behavior to follow. However, it was seen that while Sir Gawain had an exceptional handle on these values and could have been seen as a shoe-in for salvation and the poster child for morality, it was the value of truth that led to his downfall. Christian Salvation is reflected upon through Gawain’s journey. The code of chivalry that applies to all knights of the Round Table. In being the faithful Christians they were, these men created chivalry to mirror the virtues that would help them gain eternal life in heaven. Gawain strictly followed the code of chivalry to the best of his ability, making him confident in his Salvation. In addition, Gawain put effort toward reaching Salvation by attending Mass daily and participating in the sacrament of Reconciliation.
