Whether or not communism or capitalism was more powerful was the question at hand during the Cold War. The Soviet Union and the United States had a major difference over a political and economic system called Communism. The idea of communism, the belief that private property should be replaced by community, was accepted by the Soviet Union but the United States opposed it. By the end of the war, the US and the Soviet Union never actually came in contact and fought, however, the US managed to contain communism and prevent the Soviets from expanding. The US contained communism through aiding Berlin, invading Korea, and quarantining Cuba.

The Cold War was brought on by the differences in economic treatment and political ideology between the US and USSR that could no longer be ignored once the common goal of fighting together as WWII drew to a close and ended. The two powerful countries saw the other country’s actions, or lack of actions, as a power grab and a threat to their own national security. In this paper I will discuss what actions and thoughts added up to cause the cold war. The cold war lasted from September 1, 1945 to about December 25, 1991. That is about forty-five years, which is an extremely long time. The cold war was a global competition basically between two sides, the Free World, which was led by the United States of America, and the Communist World led by the Soviet Union. The struggle took place through indirect military conflict, and direct competition in the areas of economics, diplomacy, culture, space exploration, and political theory. The Cold War was an intellectual battle between communists and anti communists to have their own dominance over the modern world. The Cold War started as most wars do, two sides disagreeing with each other. In this case one side wanted to stop the spread of communism and the other side wanted them to butt out. What happens when both sides have strong opinions and potentially dangerous ideas? It just adds more fuel to the fire. The two sides specifically were the USA and the USSR. Needless to say the USA was against communism and the USSR wasn’t.

The origins of the Cold War started because of how World War II ended. The Yalta Conference in 1945 is when the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt discussed the organization of Europe. The first tension was caused in the Middle East. Soviet troops occupied parts of northern Iran during this time, and they hoped to pressure Iran, so Iran will grant them access to their oil fields. But the British and Americans pressured Stalin to remove their forces. Also during this same time, the Soviets installed pro-communist governments in Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria. They spread communism by claiming it was no different than the US dominating Latin American and Britian maintaining it’s own empire. However, Stalin was violating the promise of free elections in Poland that was agreed at the Yalta Conference in 1945. Another huge conflict that arises after the war was the Iron Curtain. The Iron Curtain was the name of the boundary between the free West and the communist East in Europe. During this postwar reconstruction, Stalin tightened his control, in fear of war with the West. When discussing the Cold War, there are two questions that never fail to come up: When did it start? And, when did it end? While the latter is more difficult to pinpoint, there is a clear starting point for the Cold War. Most arguments for the beginning are in fact post WWII events and nothing more. As the Cold War progressed there is much blame to go around, but it started with President Truman. With fear of the United States falling back into the Depression, President Truman used post WWII fallout to justify the Soviets as and enemy and in turn start the Cold War. By looking at the progression of events, and Truman’s actions, it cannot be clearer that he manipulated his citizens to march forward into a war that would last for many years

The cold war had many reasons, but two main ideas come straight to mind. The idea of Communism vs Capitalism. The idea of Communism is that while the government controls the economy and business, individuals all have the same, and therefore are all better off. Capitalism is where the country does not control the economy and businesses, making people have more freedom of what to buy, or have opportunities to start businesses.

The Cold War initiated in 1947 and ended in 1991. And involved The United States of America and allies against the communist power, The Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had a communist economic system, meaning that they only had one social class and dreamed to eventually end in a totalitarian dictatorship. Nevertheless this was very different than the capitalist ideals of the United States this economy valued private ownership. It is quite clear that the main reason behind it was the clash of U.S. capitalism and the U.S.S.R. communism ideologies. In an attempt to understand the average life of a citizen of each supper power, both nations launched an exhibition of the life of an every day citizen. A famous event now known as “The Nixon–Khrushchev debates” demonstrated how American freedom had changed since the day of depression. Roosevelt’s four freedoms were clearly diminished for a society that valued consumer good over anything else.
