Survey/pg. 130: the collection of data by having people answer a series of questions.
In the video documentary on the world’s most dangerous gang, a survey was basically being taken the whole time. Lisa Laang, the interviewer, was collecting data about this gang during the entire short film. Not only did she ask them a series of questions, but literally rolled with them for a few weeks and discovered new things to ask questions about. For example, the woman sat in the car with them watching their behavior and asked them questions as they went along. The one man was saying they had been sent on a mission to kill the man on the roof because he was in the gangs “territory”. When she asked why, the men said because thats what they were told to do. After asking a series of questions, she was able to collect a lot of information and data from the situation. Lisa did not only speak with these two gang members in the car who killed a man. To make her survey broad and accurate, she had to get information from a lot of different people that were part of the crew. Going to peoples homes and streets, she gathered a lot of information about what the gang was all about and how it ran. Her final entry and one of the best surveys she had was when she went into a prison overflowing with Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) members. After asking a series of questions such as does one person run the whole gang and who it might be and how the system works, Lisa left with a lot of information but not down
I am proud to say that this book uses facts and number statistics to educate the reader on the happenings taking place in Los Angeles. Jill uses factual statistics taken from gang activity as well as the police files available to the public to write this amazing book. Accuracy is extremely important to this book because the author is focusing on a huge topic in our society.
Early surveys by the NCVS were felt that the information obtained in the interview of the victim may not be reliable. Interviewees can be vulnerable to several types of biases including memory errors, errors of deception, telescoping, and sampling errors.
Surveys of youth and/or young adults (hereafter, surveys of youth) also assess parameters of gang phenomena. Estimates of prevalence rates of gang membership ranging from 5% to 25% have been reported from major projects initiated by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Also by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (the National Evaluation of the Gang Resistance Education and Training; Bjerregaard & Smith, 1993).
Even so, early on in my reading on this ethnography, I identified the role gender plays not only for the ethnographer doing the research, but also for the gang members. As the gang members matured into adulthood the similarities in these gender roles that match most societies became apparent,
This week I read chapter 5 of American street gangs (old book) Tim Deleany mentioned 3 points of what happens inside a gang that many don’t know, the first point is the categories they have based on the age the recruits are, the second point is the categories they are placed in depending on the activities they are involved, the third point is the process that involves the recruitment, punishment, and leaving the gang. At the conclusion of the paper I would be providing an experience my uncle went through when he was leaving the gang.
A study done in 1996 on prisoners of the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed inmates for the first 3 years of their incarceration. This study found that “inmates with no gang affiliation were significantly less likely that those wit either street gang affiliation or prison gang affiliation to have been guilty of a violent misconduct” (Griffin, 2006). Also noted in the Griffon study, inmates who have a gang affiliation are less likely to participate in needed rehab and vocational programs that may help them upon release. A big problem with prison gangs is that very little is known about them, this is because they are very secretive, unlike their counterparts on the streets (Fong, 1991). The reason for this secrecy is so gang members can avoid being persecuted by the prison administration.
The answers provided were more of a logical viewpoint; therefore it would shed more light onto what research I have already presented. The interviewees provided more detailed information on my research topic, for example crimes rates in the U.S. And a specific city like Chicago, and other crime rates in which are in turn related to gun violence. Learning this information is something that we will need to continue to develop new ideas and new ways to be able to study it, so we can put an end to this type of violence.
Although detectives are working hard on the case to prevent further chaos between these two groups, the lack of witness and evidence is slowing them down. This information, provided by the gang-crimes unit, is unfortunate but not so unusual. The fear gangs have put into the community is the cause to blame.
In addition to the issue of defining a gang, the reasoning and motivation behind the use of violence by these groups of individuals appears. It is quite difficult to identify whether a crime is gang related or not, such as in the case of the shooting of Randall Barrs. One definition of gang related crimes are that they must be committed within the group context and clearly promote the goals or interests of the gang (Mares 2010; Rosenfeld et al. 1999; Howell 1999). This creates the debate in regards to whether individually motivated crimes are still gang related. The importance of this pertains to how gang related crimes would be documented within the justice system. However there is no dilemma in seeing the positive relationship amongst gang memberships and violent crime. Klein (2006) finds that youth who self report their gang involvement are four to six times more likely to engage in serious violence than youth who are not gang-involved. Howell (1998) states that official police statistics from the United States show that gang members are twenty times more likely than other at-risk youth to engage in a drive-by-shooting, ten times more likely to engage in a homicide, eight times more likely to commit robbery and three times more likely to engage in an aggravated assault. In addition gang members are also more likely to carry weapons such as firearms and use them (Wortley 2008). Studies have shown that gang violence is more likely to occur in public places, involving
The data included the inmates personal information (address, birthplace, nicknames, ect,), and criminal records. The data was also limited to inmates who were incarcerated in May 2004 and May 2006, serving three conservative years in a traditional facility, and who were not sentenced to life without the possibility of parole or sentenced to death (Worrall & Morris. 2012). There results shown that gang membership is an important
In order to provide the Australia Park Victoria with the appropriate data to solve its current crisis, the most appropriate method of data collection for this research is the qualitative method. According to Gay and Airasian (p 627) qualitative method is the collection of extensive data on various variables over a long time in a natural setting with an aim of acquiring insights not possible using other methods. It involves three different kinds of information collection: direct observation, in depth and open-ended interviews and written documents. Qualitative method involves use of random sampling and structured data collection instruments that fit different experiences. The method also enables the researcher to study the specific area of
The look and study of street gangs have been shifting over the past 4-5 decades due to changes in the tactics taken by sociologists. There were many books written about these gangs including “The Gang” , by Thrasher, which was recognized as one of the first or if not the first gang related to sociological views. People ask questions such as, “Why do people join these gangs and why do most of them end up causing havoc and violence within a city.” This is a question a normal person that isn’t looking at these people as subjects due for change but rather people who aren’t “normal”. Sociologists look at these people and ask questions like, “Where do they live? Who are they friends with? How and why did their social practices and cultural values change?” These are questions a sociologist would ask simply because there are many factors which come out when determining the choices of deviance within a person.
For me, I do not have enough knowledge about this project and there are so many topics that I do not have an enough in depth knowledge. And I am serious about the part of doing a questionnaire survey.
Criminal gangs are there to rule, they have been there in every community for a long time. Gang's intentions are to commit crimes. Gang leaders oversee extortion, order killings or smuggle drugs. This paper studies gang formation, why individuals join gangs and the negative influence gangs have to the society and the economy. The study focuses on some of the prominent gangs in the world today; it explains the activities of the Russian mafia and other gangs. This paper explains power struggles within gangs and gives out recommendations to solve problems associated with gang operations. This paper puts into perspective a study on factors influencing gang membership; the study employs personal interviews as a method, causal research design and ordinal scale of measurement. Prisoners in California state prison are the sample population. Structured proxy question are used, and observation to study an individual's race. The study focuses male prison gang members. Findings from the study indicate that the less educated an individual is the likely for one join a gang, from the study it is evident that gang members feel disregarded when formulating policies, it is clear that race is not a factor to gang membership and that most of the gang members come from dysfunctional families.
The information gained from the interviews was paired with information from the FBI 's Behavioural Science Unit as well as examinations of forensic evidence, nature of attacks and the crime scene itself.
