Dear God, Tell Everybody, It’d Spark a Fight Literature is the author’s vehicle, commandeered for the purpose of transferring societal commentary to a definitive audience. In Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, the writing is a medium for Walker’s political agenda. Through literary elements such as stereotypes, diction, juxtaposition, and symbolism Walker explores the issue of gender roles. The action of the novel opens with strict standards of men and women, progresses to a building contrast of characters outside of these standards, and closes with the breaking of standards. The literary elements are used to successfully emphasize oppressive gender roles with the purpose of empowering women and men to confront the unjust issue.

Throughout the novel, the repetition of the word fight such as “you got to fight. You got to fight” is Walker’s strategy of inspiring in her readers to fight these stereotypes. Her character’s then become prime examples of breaking free of society’s standards. The novel climaxes when Celie at last speaks her mind, claiming “when I open my mouth the air rush in and shape words” (206). This is symbolic of her ceasing to be part of the standard and becoming an individual. Throughout the falling action, Celie and Mr. ___ become completely new characters. Celie opens a pants business. Pants are a symbol of empowerment, with which Walker intends to show the audience that Celie has won her battle with gender roles. Walker utilizes juxtaposition to show the original stereotypes contrasted with the current roles when Celie says she could“see he feeling scared of me...Let him feel what I felt” (223). Up to this point, Mr.___’s character has fit the original stereotype exactly, he is demanding, physically and emotionally abusive, and cold. From here however, Mr. ___’s character starts new. He paints his house “fresh and white” a symbol of starting over (253). He develops a collection of large shells and claims “...seem like you can hear the waves or something crashing against your ear” (253).
