The Comparison and Contraction Between Various Skin Cells By: Michael McDaniel, Latoya Gates, Cristy Barfield, and Danielle Chapelle Abstract During this experiment we planned to compare and contrast human cheek cells of a variety of age groups, different stages of skin, and difference in species. We wanted to see if age could correlate to cell structure and size, if animal and human cells differed and if epidermal and cheek cells could differ in shape, size, and color. The age groups that we planned to study were adolescent, young adult, and adult for both human and animal. The animals that we studies were in the canine and lizard class. It is estimated that almost eighty percent of aging can be attributed to the sun’s rays (3). By observing the similarities of the different subjects, one can conclude that the skin cells of unlike organisms are actually quite similar. The only things that really change the look and function of the cells are tissue damage and aging. Because of this, skin structure is a useful tool in relating different organisms. Materials and Methods Slides Cover Slips Swabs Distilled Water Sample Cells Light Microscopes Sterile Tweezers To start the project, each member of the team was required to skin cell samples from humans, dog, and one reptile (Mali Uromastux). The samples were taken from the fore arm of the humans as well as the dogs. Shedding skin from the lower back of the reptile was extracted. In order to remove the cells from the humans, a cotton swab was brushed against the skin several times. The cells would then stick the tip of the swab. The swabs were placed into small plastic bags, sealed, and labeled. Another method that was used was to wet the swab and then brush it on to the skin. This was done to give the cells a better chance of attaching to the swab. Cells that were taken from thee inner cheek were obtained rubbing a dry swab on the inner cheek.
