Effects of Nurse Bullying and Solutions Nurse bullying is a problem within the nursing profession that continues to be harmful. Nurse bullying is defined as a repeated, offensive, abusive, intimidating, or insulting behavior, abuse of power, or unfair sanctions that make recipients upset and feel humiliated, vulnerable or threatened, creating stress and undermining self-confidence (Castronovo, Pullizzi, & Evans, 2016). Nurse bullying is not a new problem and impacts nurses, healthcare organizations, and patients. There has been documented evidence of nurse bullying for the last 100 years and proposed solutions. The consequences of nurse bullying are immense and effect the victim and the organization. There have been efforts to address the problem, however bullying continues to be widespread in the nursing profession.
Issue
Nurse bullying is an important issue in the nursing profession. “Bullying contributes to unhealthy and toxic environments, which in turn contribute to ineffective patient care, increased stress, and decreased job satisfaction among healthcare providers” (Bennett & Sawatzky, 2013, p. 144) The personal effects include anxiety, depression, fatigue, and headaches (Castronovo et al. 2016). Bennett and Sawatzy (2013) explain that the professional consequences include staff turnover and loss of productivity. According to Bennett et al.
