Global Warming and Climate Change Although the terms global warming and climate change are often used interchangeably they apply to different phenomena. Climate change refers to change in earth's temperature humidity, air pressure, wind, clouds and precipitation patterns over time. Global warming is a Contributing factor to climate change and refers specifically to the effect of greenhouse gases. Human activities contribute to climate change by causing change in the earth's atmosphere in the amount of greenhouse gases, aerosols and cloudiness. There needs to be regulations and procedures put in place in order to repair and stop some of the damage caused by pollution and burning fossil fuels Burning fossil fuels are one of the major causes of climate change (Source). There needs to be alternatives to using fossil fuels. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an organization that works to do just that. The NRDC is developing ways to reduce pollution and move toward clean energy. According to the NRDC website, "Oil, gas, and other fossil fuels come with grave consequences for our health and our future." This organization fights to help reduce fossil fuels and make better air pollution so it doesn’t cause bad health problems. NRDC help to change the laws and send companies to court if they broke the law. Another way to help the air pollution and burning fossil fuels is to clean up US power plants. With the clean power plants in place,
The U.S obtains more than 84% of its energy from fossil fuels including oil, coal and natural gas. This is because people rely on it to heat their homes, power industries, run vehicles, manufacturing, and provision of electricity. It is apparent that the country’s transportation industry highly depends on conventional petroleum oil, which is responsible for global warming, thus threatening economic opulence and national security. Apart from that, increasing consumption of fossil fuels have elevated health problems in the state, destroyed wild places, and polluted the environment. After conducting Environmental Impact Assessment, projections showed that the world energy consumption would increase by more than 56% between 2010 and 2040. However, fossil fuels will cater for more than 80% of the total energy used in 2040. Sadly, it will be a trajectory to alter the world’s climate, as well as, weaken the global security environment. Importantly, the rate at which the US relies on fossil fuels needs to reduce since it has adverse effects on the planet’s supplies. The society needs to realize that fossil fuels are nonrenewable, thus taking millions of years to form (Huebner, 2003). Notably, the country can reduce dependency on fossil fuels by practicing energy conservation and efficiency,
In america alone, most of the fossil fuels used to produce energy are unintentionally wasted. (Source F) If this continues, future generations are not going to be able to remain on some areas of this planet, if any at all. Pollution, a major factor in global warming, has the ability to be reduced in electrically powered vehicles, simple changes in light bulbs, and even just plugging out appliances not in use. (Source F) By the government regulating these effortless practices , they can eliminate fears of destroying the world for their
We all know that fossil fuels and harsh burning of chemicals are bad for our environment. Through the cause of global warming and the depletement of the atmosphere it is apparent. From the start of coal burning all the way through nuclear
First, climate change and global warming must be defined and explained. According to Melissa Denchek from the Natural Resources Defense Council, climate change is “a significant variation of average weather conditions” (Denchek). The key factor is that the variation is a long-term trend, and not just due to natural weather
Many people in today’s society use the terms Global Warming and Climate change interchangeably when actually, global warming is more of a long-term trend of only increasing global temperatures and climate change can be a decrease or increase in climate patterns of a particular area or sector (Lineman).
When fossil fuels are burnt, the c02 is released into the atmosphere rapidly, and the c02 cycle doesn’t have enough time to get the c02 out of the atmosphere. This c02 traps the heat from coming out of the atmosphere and creates global warming. Global warming is serious because it melts the ice cap, removes habitas, raises sea levels and many other negative effects. A good way to stop this environmental hazard is to use green energy. Instead of burning coal and natural gas, we can use more wind turbines, hydro-electric dams and other green electricity options. We also need to research solar panels more, so we can make them more efficiant. If we start to do this, the c02 outtake would be significantly decreased and the world will be a better place to live
that are bringing the world closer and closer to global warming. As of right now, America’s economy is mostly dependent on destructive fossil fuels for its energy supply. Our country is producing a quarter of the world’s pollution. Usage of fossil fuels has increasingly contributed to the CO2 emissions, which is polluting our environment. It is destroying natural habitats and causing an increase in health problems. If our harmful methods continue, our planet will eventually become uninhabitable. Fossil fuels are considered a nonrenewable resource, which means we are required to find a new and clean renewable energy source. These new energy sources must be readily available for the world’s energy demands. Our vision should focus on environmentally friendly and efficient energies such as wind and solar power. Becoming more dependent on wind and solar power would mean having an infinite amount of energy and create more job opportunities, which would help the world’s economy as well.
“Global warming refers to the recent and ongoing rise in global average temperature near Earth 's surface. It is caused mostly by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global warming is causing climate patterns to change. However, global warming itself represents only one aspect of climate change” (Climate Change, EPA.gov).
Not only will this show that individuals can make a change, but also that everyone plays a part in climate change. Furthermore, change can be implemented at a federal level. Clean energy can be easily produced by the United States and will be beneficial towards the corporations, vehicles, and small farms. Once the government turns resources towards building machines for clean energy such as solar panels and wind turbines, the economy will save $465 billion each year by 2030 according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (1). Also, 1.2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year which is approximately 20% of fossil fuel emissions will be reduced (1). Switching to clean energy will not only decrease global warming, but have great benefits from the investments such as less health effects that come from pollution and
“Climate change refers to any change in the climate, regardless of the cause and can refer to warm and cold over the ice ages over the past one million years,” Veres explained. “Global warming, on the other hand, specifically focuses on the warming that has happened over the last 150 years on Earth because of greenhouse emissions by humans.”
The exact definition of global warming according to the Oxford dictionary is a gradual increase in overall temperature of earth’s atmosphere that is generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increasing levels of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. The definition of climate change according to the Oxford dictionary is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular change from the mid to late 20th century caused by the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide secreted from fossil fuels (“Definition”). Although these definitions are very similar, they do not have the same meaning. The causing agent of climate change to progress at
Although, climate change and global warming are essentially the same thing, the difference between them is that global warming is one type of climate change. Global
The environment is negatively affected be the burning of fossil fuels. The affects of the gases contribute to global warming, along with acid rain and polluted air. This pollution cuts short an estimated 30,000 American lives according to the Clean Air Task Force (Rich). The United States must stop using fossil fuels because the gases produce harm the environment we live causing harm to come all the citizens. “The future of energy production will
Our modern world is one of busy streets, loud machines, and steaming factories. All three of these things, while necessary and important part of society, have some unintended effects on the world. We sometimes fail to realize the effect that we have on the world with every action that we take. The people of the world, in collaboration, are massive users of fossil fuels. The gas emissions that cars, busses, and even planes produce have a very profound effect on our atmosphere, and not many people take the initiative to reduce these harmful substances. However, there are some that are actively trying to find a solution to the problem to cleaner and renewable energy.
Everyday in U.S., immense amount of fossil fuel is burned. Fossil fuels are fuel formed by natural processes, such as decomposition of buried dead organisms. Fossil fuel release carbon dioxide when they are burned which adds to the greenhouse effect and increases global warming. The way we can help the environment and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide is by replaying fossil fuels with solar and wind sources for electric power generations in the U.S.
