The Consequences of Abortion through Poetry

The debate of what literature is or how it should be defined is an ongoing battle even today. Many have expressed that literature should be well-written, worthy of study, and also stand the test of time, despite most of this criteria catering towards classical literature written by wealthy white men, while others believe this is all too subjective to work fairly. I personally believe that literature is at least three of the following: An embodiment of the human experience, a reflection of cultural perspective, and the relationship between author and reader.

The abortion question raises a number of issues that form the core of the abortion debate. Opponents and supporters of abortions have been battling over this particular problem for decades and still cannot come to an agreement. Being one of the most common and most controversial medical procedures, abortion tends to affect people on psychological and sociological levels. But while the discussion of the morality of abortion is an ongoing debate, the social issues surrounding abortion in most cases stay unnoticed. The social aspect of the issue is centered on the abortion policy. The main question of the abortion policy is whether the law should permit abortions and, if so under what circumstances. The other is whether the law should put the life of an unborn child first and legally protect it. The peculiarity of the abortion policy is that its measures are highly dependent on different public opinions.

Literature provides an engaging outlet into an imaginary realm to its audience. As the reader is captivated by the story, poem or play, a, emotional connection is established.

Ethical justification of abortion is a controversial subject consisting of numerous significant theories that have been presented based on studies and researches. Basically, abortion refers to termination of pregnancy through removal of the undeveloped fetus. Seemingly, the act is highly condemned by majority sociologists and health practitioners due to violation of humanitarian ethics and morals. However, this particular perspective is orientated by the normative ethics system entailing utilitarianism versus deontology. Alternatively, this excerpt shall focus on analyzing the social altercations of abortion based on views and opinions presented by two influential individuals, namely Marquis and Steinbock. By identifying the main arguments and key elements apparent in the two arguments, the study is likely to derive rational insight concerning moral permissibility of abortion.

Abortion has been a controversial subject for centuries across the globe. Although the fetus may not be scientifically a human being, there is budding humanity within it; and hence trying to terminate fetus must be considered as criminal offense of killing a human being. Not many of the world’s population have realized the effects caused by the abortion and its impacts on the society. Abortion is considered to be immoral crime affecting not only the mother but also the family, the community, and most significantly the fetus.

Abortion is a medical process when a pregnancy is ended and it does not result in the birth of a child. Since the court of Roe v. Wade in 1973, the United States legalized the process of abortion. Yet, even after millions of abortions in the US, the debate on the topic of abortion rises still over decades of time. Two groups are presented: those who are in favor of abortion, who are called pro-choice, and those who are against it, pro-life. Although the pro-life states the immorality and valid reasonings to argue about it’s side, there are still many factors that one must remember. The life of the mother, the economic status of the child, and the future of the unborn child against the society should be considered to argue that abortion should remain legal.

Therefore, according to Marquis, a new strategy should be adopted to develop the argument o abortion. In this case, the author starts by illustrating why killing an ordinary adult is morally wrong, and tries to apply same reasons to the case of abortion. Therefore, if similar reasons can be applied to the context of abortion, then decision of it being immoral will be made. The wrong aspect in killing relates to depriving the victim life which is inherently valuable. In this case, killing deprives of the victim the very valuable things that he or she could have achieved in future if life was not terminated prematurely (Vaughn, 2012). Among these valuables are aesthetic experiences, relationships, accomplished projects, achievements and goals. Therefore, killing is regarded as wrong because it denies the victim the value of the future. Marquis, therefore, notes that there are various reasons to explain why killing is wrong. Firstly, it accounts for the idea that murder is the worst crime because of the extent of its deprivation. It also matches with the attitude that the terminally ill develop concerning the future death. In addition, the act of killing has no special importance that supports moral reasons to justify abortion. Furthermore, the author reveals that this idea is plausible in the verdict of various ethical activities. For instance, it is used to explain why euthanasia victims are a time allowed to be killed as well as a reason behind infanticide.

Literature. What is Literature? Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become. In other words, it is written works (such as poems, plays, and novels) that are considered to be very good and to have lasting importance.

When a text is first being dissected it is important to walk in to the situation prepared. To be prepared you must go into the situation equipped with your own interpretation as to what constitutes literature. The definition of literature isn’t very concise. Like art the definition of literature can vary from one individual to another and before studying these subjects the audience should establish their own definition so that they can look for themes and symbols in the piece. In my opinion I believe that literature should be defined as any fictitious work that implements symbols, and other literary devices, to convey different themes and messages below the surface of the text. With this interpretation of literature I think that its purpose is to give the audience insight into the lives of others and make statements about our society.
