The Constitutional Debate We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America ( Rakove 107). The United States Constitution is the oldest written constitution in the world. It was originally written on four pieces of parchment paper behind closed by white men who gained acceptance by the citizens. The constitution created a government that is for the people and by the people. Through the years it has had the ability to change as we the people and as a county have changed including our views, ideologies and social standards. The first form of government the United States had was the Articles of Confederation established after winning freedom from King George III. This government was weak and unable to to keep the peace between the states, leading George Washington to wonder if “United” States should be called a Union ( Patterson 35) This lead to a two part process –framing by a special convention, and ratification by the people to form a new government( Ravoke 106) On May 25,1787 a group of men ( later to be known as The Farmers) would draw up plans to form a new government( Le Vert 11) Using documents such as the Articles of Confederation, which some of these same men had help draft in 1781 ,and
