Wine has been an alcoholic drink that has been consumed for centuries by the upper class and now is one of the most popular alcoholic drinks in the modern century. However, it is red wine that has been identified as having healthy properties not white wine. This is largely due to a phenomenon known as the French paradox. The consumption of red wine has been used to explain why the French have the second lowest rate of heart disease in the world although they have a diet rich in fatty foods (Inserm, 2016).

Resveratrol is produced by grape vines in order to resist parasites and fungal infections. As seen in graph 1 pinot noir has the highest amounts of resveratrol. Pinot noir grapes are grown in cooler, damp regions where fungi are more likely to attack grape vines. Due to this grape develop a defence mechanism called resveratrol which fights the fungi to stop the grape from being infected. Which leads to grapes grown in these climates having higher amounts of resveratrol.

Studies have shown that resveratrol has many healing and prevention properties such as reducing symptoms associated with reducing heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, damage to blood vessels and it prevents blood clots forming (WebMD). Study done on rodents was conducted with the oral administration which decreased tumour growth and had effects of numerous cancerous cells (PMC,2013). Resveratrol can be found in 3 different forms while in your blood stream these are glucuronide, sulphate or free. While resveratrol is in free form it can bind with lipoproteins and albumin which dissociates at cellular membranes allowing the resveratrol to enter the cells. Resveratrol’s structure allows it to interact with fatty acids dissolving them which creates lower amounts of cholesterol in blood. Lowering the amount of cholesterol in blood leads to reducing risk of heart disease.
