Have you ever been working in class and a student using their caused you to be distracted? Texting instead of paying attention in school is when you bring your cell phone to class and text or use social media when the teacher isn’t looking and you aren’t listening. My topic is controversial because people cannot agree on it. Many adults and a few students want to ban cell phones, but everyone else wants to remain using their phones at school. I support banning cellphones in schools because texting and using social media in class leads to lower GPA and test scores, bullying, and disruptiveness. Many students focus on their cellphones instead of their education during school. Source 2 states that, “ While smartphones can lower educational costs and enhance student satisfaction, they are not shown to improve academic performance.” Source 1 explains that, “ Students believe they are capable of multitasking with smartphones, but they are not and earn lower grades as a result.” On the darker side source 5 tells that, “ Some students use their …show more content…
My opponents might say what source 2 said; “ Technology can lower educational costs and enhance student satisfaction.” Source 2 also says that, “ technology cannot replace the vital skills of teachers to challenge the minds and capture the attention of distracted students.” Source 2 states along with that, “ smartphones are not shown to improve academic performance.” I firmly believe in banning cellphones in schools because of how much distraction they cause. I believe that people will be driven to join my side because source 5 explains how sometimes, “ some students use their cellphones for bullying and insulting each other, which can cause students to commit suicide.” Now, if anyone wants to do something about the cell phone distractions you can give a speech at school or write a petition to the office recommending that cell phones be
Although phones may be used to help students with work, North Eugene high school should ban phones because how much of a distraction they can be in a classroom. Schools that have banned phone at school, 82% of students have a phone on at school.(Document #3) If North Eugene at least has a policy with not having students bring the phones in class, that will help with test scores and participation in class. “Students with laptops had a lower test result than those without. The reason? They were not paying attention to their teachers. We should expect the same thing from cell phones.” (Document #6) When using technology at school it may help but there also needs to be an extent to where it needs to stop. Phone are not going to help with our
First, cell phones cause students to do badly on their work. If they are focused on their phone instead of what they're learning, they will not know what to do. This leads to lousy grades on homework, daily work, and tests. Having lousy grades lead to failing classes. Failing classes does not look good to colleges. This ripple effect could cause some students to not get into the college of their choice and it all
With the statements given by my evidence, it is true that phones are useful and well used tools when students and teachers have the proper websites and apps to go to for specific things. This is good because the technology is so easy to use and is good at keeping track of things you need to do or have already done such as tests and/or quizzes.
Cell phones are distracting in school and disrupt learning. Students should always be giving their teacher their undivided attention. Cell phones in school create problems and they affect students’ grades. Although some may claim these reasons to be true, they are undeniably wrong. The proponents of cell phones should not be allowed in school argue, “We know for a fact that the use of cell phones on school property around the country has led to a number of problems around safety.” This is wrong because cell phone use on school grounds is only beneficial to individuals on and off school property. Cell phones do not necessarily prevent problems, but they do help in times of emergencies. They promote safety in situations such as school shootings or hostage situations. The proponents of cell phones should not be allowed in school also argue “Student’s whose minds wander during a lecture or discussion may find the temptation of texting instead of listening hard to resist.” While this is true, it is up to the student to pay attention. However, texting instead of listening is the same as doodling and not listening, or playing on a school issued laptop even after being told to put it away. It is up to the student to restrain from texting in class. The more schools put an emphasis on no phones in school the more
If we have cellphones in school, students can look up facts up easier and faster than you can do on our chromebooks. If we are allowed to have are phones and we are playing a game, and your volume is up it can distract the entire class if your phone is making noise. If you are in math or science class and you need a calculator you will be able to bring it up faster than you do on your chromebook. If we are allowed to have our phones we will be able to easily study for tests and might study longer because it is on your own device. They will like to do it on their phone so they can listen to music and stuff like that.
Sylvia McDonald’s “The effects and predictor value of in-class texting behavior on final course grades” discusses the negative correlation between cell phone use in schools and final grades through research, examples, and charts. McDonald states that while cell phones can be an excellent form of communication, they can oftentimes be a very big distraction. Studies were given to further support the argument. The researchers conducted a study that included three different colleges, all with different cell phone policies. The results of the study were very self evident. The study showed a negative correlation between the cell phone policy and the test average. The college with the most lenient policy tended to have the lowest test score. Overall, the author explains the relevance of cell phone use and how much of a
Tap Tap, Tap. Students are constantly using cellphones in class when they should be paying attention to important materials in class. Some schools have banned cell phones. Some schools are taking advantage of cell phones and trying to them to open new possibilities for new learning experience. A cell phone is a piece of technology that can have a positive and negative effect. For example you can use it find out what you need to study. It depends on the user. Cell phones can also be used to cheat and then you wouldn’t be learning anything, except how to cheat. Do you really think that we should allow these with children that don’t know how to use them correctly? I wouldn’t. Although cell phones can open new opportunities to learning, we can not assume that students will use them for academic reasons. Therefore, cell phones are not the best thing to have in school, they shouldn't be allowed in school to ensure a good environment for the future generations of mankind. The negative effects from cell phones can distract kids from the subject they are learning in school, reduce the amount of respect students show teachers, and make schools less empathetic. The only thing that schools will get from allowing cellphones in class is nothing but trouble.
Thirdly, cell phones are just another item, and banning them makes them more irresistible to people, especially teenagers. "As a student, I understand that cell phones are distracting while a teacher is trying to help the students--but at the same time, I believe they become even more distracting to the class as a WHOLE when teachers make a huge deal out of trying to take a phone away or punish a student for having a phone out."(Answer.yahoo.com-2009)Cell phones could be one of the 5 distractions-talking, playing, throwing, devices, and physical actions. With cell phones you're making less distraction to the class because you’re not disturbing anyone but yourself and that’s a good

Author of “Students Hail End of Cellphone Ban” includes: “Many teachers embrace using phones in class to conduct quick surveys, serve as calculators or access the internet”(Brody 3). Cell phones are becoming an essential tool in the classroom because of new capabilities. Teachers can connect more with their students through activities involving cellphones. Cell phones have a sort of “pull” to them, and by using them for school activities, some pay more attention. Brody also adds: “Now there are phone apps that let students connect with interactive whiteboards at the front of the classroom”(Brody 3). The way teenagers are learning is changing with the times. Instead of learning new material through pen and paper, teens can learn it through their phones and participate in activities that utilize them properly and educationally. Author of “Smartphones Go to School”, Doug Arnett, quotes: “Many teachers now want students to use phones for homework and in class;from research to quizzes”(Wells 1). If teachers can encourage students to use their phones to complete class work, they may be more willing. Teens use their phones every day for a variety of things. In the article Teens’ Newest Use for Smartphones? Writing School Papers on Them.” student Samantha DeWitt quotes: ”Oh yeah”, says Samantha Dewitt, a sophomore at King Philip

One problem with cell phones in today’s society is that they have become major distractions. Cell phones are distracting employees in the workplace and are leaving them with their jobs halfway done. Everywhere in the business industries, the employees are hard at work re-tweeting and catching up on the latest newsfeed rather than managing their time more wisely. Not only are cell phones a distraction in the workplace, they are also a distraction and disruptive in school districts, causing students’ attention to be elsewhere. Many students would rather text in the middle of class instead of pay attention to what the teacher is reviewing. In this case, students do not gain the amount of education provided for them. In addition to cell phones being distracting, people often like to multi-task by walking or driving while texting. These things cause them to be unaware of their surroundings. Texting while driving has become a major issue because texting and driving can lead to car crashes which are often fatal. On the other hand, texting and walking isn’t too bad, but can cause a little bit of embarrassment. There are stories of people walking into walls and bumping into people or tripping over a table because their nose seems to be stuck in their phone. To some, being on their cell phone is more important than grades, clients, and others around them.
Many places in society are setting policies on digital device. The principal at my school has also set policies on banning cell phones in school. Students should not be permitted to use cell phones in school. Using cell phones during school allows students to cheat. Students will be more distracted by cell phones and pay less attention to the teacher and to the lesson. Students have a higher chance of getting in trouble if they use cell phones in school rather than if they are not allowed to use digital devices in school.
Technology has been statistically proven to hinder knowledge, even though students are using it to gain knowledge in itself. The majority of technology use, according to a survey by Jackson (2013), 39.1% of 102 students in question admitted using their mobile phone during class for personal use and only 3.1% reported to use their device for academic purpose. According to an article in Government Technology, students who use their phones more than 10 hours day had a significantly lower grade-point average – 2.84 – in comparison to the GPA of those students who only used their phones up to two hours daily – 3.15. This shows that multitasking has a negative impact on learning. In support of this,
In school majority of the students use their cell phones in class and they don’t pay attention to the subject their working. Many fail classes because students are too busy texting or on facebook. It’s really sad how technology can change studying and how grades go down. Students in Middle School use cell phones very often that they don't even pay attention to their teachers lecturing. Students even make new friends by facebook that they forget their real friends. Students think texting is something important to do but really it seems just a waste of time.Students should spend more time in paying attention in school of being texting or on facebook.Parents should not be buying their kids cell phones because its bad for their studying. They should have phones till they are in high school not middle school because they don't know how to handle it and in high
