For this to be achieved, semi-conducting materials would be required to induce the photovoltaic effect. A photovoltaic system comprises solar panels, each fitted with a number of solar cells that supply solar energy to the system. In the absence of sunlight, solar power would be available for household or commercial lighting applications (Ratlamwala 86). This paper examines the feasibility of converting solar PV electricity into hydrogen for fuel cells based on: cost of hydrogen production (per kilogram), the quantity of solar power required to generate hydrogen (per kilogram), the feasibility of the technology in the UAE amid the costs and efficiencies of the system components. Question 1 Just like the rest of the world, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Middle East have intensified efforts to curb the global warming menace. Several independent studies (e.g. Harder 790 & Radhi 18) have pointed out that overdependence on fossil fuels tends to heighten global warming. At a glance, hydrogen can be considered as an ideal substitute to fossil fuels. Hydrogen provides about three times of renewable energy harnessed from natural gas. When hydrogen is used in energy production, pure water is emitted as the sole by-product of the process (Radhi 12).
