The Core Tenets of Islam The religion of Islam dates back to the 7th century CE and the life of its founder, Muhammad of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Islam is an Arabic word meaning: making something safe and secure, making something sound and whole, entering into peace and tranquility, and surrendering to something other than oneself. A follower of Islam is called a Muslim. In the religion of Islam, it requires the belief in certain core tenets, which include the articles of faith and the five pillars of worship. These two combined, form the Islamic creed.

The third article of faith in Islam, is the belief in all the prophets and messengers sent by God, ending with Muhammad. All messengers were chosen by God to teach mankind. They were all human, and have no share in divinity, but they are the perfect paradigms for humanity. The messages were all the same, as it came from one God. Their fundamental message was identical, reminding mankind of Allah’s oneness, the reward of a good life, and the Day of Judgment and the terrible punishment for disbelievers (“Islamic Path”). In the Quran, the holy book of Islam, it states the names of the twenty-five prophets, and every Muslim accepts them all. Except for Muhammad, all prophets are considered to be national or local messengers. Muhammad, on the other hand, is considered a prophet for all the nations. He is also described as the “Seal of all Prophets,” as stated in the Quran. He stands as the last messenger. In the Quran, the phenomena of earlier prophets are recognized. Those prophets included, Abraham, Noah, Jesus, Moses, and many others. The belief in all scriptures and revelations of God is the fourth article of faith. The revelations were given to guide the people to the true path of God. In the Quran, it refers to the books that were revealed to Abraham, David, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. Muhammad: The holy book that my faith uses is called the Quar’an. The Quar’an is considereed to be the most latest and accurate revelation. Unlike the Bible or Torah, the Quar’an does not use the Old Testament, but instead is believed to contain the exact words of Allah.

In this chapter we have discussed and learned about monotheism in Islam. There are five essential doctrines stated in the Qu’ran. The Divine Unity or also known as Tawhid means “to acknowledge as one”. In Islam their is a big belief in angels; they are said to be exist before humans and made of light. There are four archangels: Gabriel, Micheal, Israfil, and Izra’il. The Jinn is a non-viable being that is similar to a human but made of fire. Like many other religions, the Muslim faith has experienced many changes and branches. Like Christianity, the original faith is still practiced by some, but others have started new branches with their own unique interpretation being Muslim. Despite these differences within the Muslim religion, one set of rules for moral guidance is central to all. These rules are the Five Pillars of Islam. The Five Pillars act as a moral compass for Muslims and are universally accepted as they are mentioned specifically in the Qur’an, the sacred Muslim book of God’s words as they were recited to Muhammad (Molloy, 425).

Allah is the creator of everything and is held in the highest regard for Islamic people. Although there is one god, there are a multitude of prophets who bring the word of God to the Muslim people much like the multiple deities who come from Brahma.
