“It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels”-Saint Augustine. Pride is can bring out the good qualities in people but can also overpower them, and cause a negative reaction. The Count of Monte Cristo is about Edmond Dantes who was about to be the captain of the Pharaon and marry the love of his life. Until, he was falsely accused of treason, by his “friends” and sent to Chateau d’if. When Edmond escapes the jail he finds a smuggler ship who takes him to the Isle of Monte Cristo.
The main character in The Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantès, changes during the story in more ways than one. The most evident change is that Edmond changes his identity from ‘Edmond Dantès’ to ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’. In addition to his identity, his personality changes. Before jail, Edmond was a happy man who said he “had no enemies”, after jail he was an angry man who wanted revenge on those who had put him in jail. This change is not a good one. In the beginning of the story, Edmond was a trusting man who didn’t know the evils of the world. By the end of the story, he learned that people could be mean, but there are always people who are kind. Edmond also found ways to retaliate at people who are evil to him. In The Count of Monte
“It is better to lose your pride to the one you love, than to lose the one you love to your pride.”(Tamara Beasley)”Pride will cost you everything but leave you with nothing”(Fahad Ntulume). The Count of Monte Cristo was written by a man named, Alexandre Dumas. In the book, we meet a character named Villefort, when he wrongly imprisoned a man named Edmond Dantes for treason that was never committed. The reason for doing this was to protect his name and fortune. While Edmond was in jail, he met an old man who gave him a map to a enormous fortune on the Isle of Monte Cristo. Fourteen years later Edmond escapes from jail, collected the fortune, and after some time, finds Villefort. Villefort is now a very wealthy public prosecutor, who only cares
The Theme of Justice in The Crucible The crucible was set in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. The play is based on true facts about events that actually took place. It is about a small secluded town that relies strongly on their religion to keep them feeling safe. Their enemy is the devil and they are always scared of the devil and constantly looking for signs that the devil is there.
That quote shows for once in the book the reason he is doing what he is doing. The reason he seeks revenge is because he believes God sent him. Not only does the Count believe he is an “agent of providence” he also believes in divine justice “The Count of Monte Cristo in the context of its allusions to Byron and Shakespeare.References to philosophical implications of Monte Cristo’s beliefs of divine justice.” Divine justice is the belief that god will right wrongs, and the Count believes that God sent him to right the wrong in this case get revenge on Caderousse, Danglars, Ferdinand, and Villefort. The Count’s plan was to get revenge on four bad men. However in the end he kills more good than bad. Yes, he did not mean to kill those innocent people they were collateral damage ,but nonetheless he still caused damage. Out of six people that died only two of them were the bad people the Count set out to kill. Villefort is showing the dead Edouard to the Count the reader will see in this quote that the Count knows he went too far ;Monte Cristo paled at the horrible sight. He realized that he had gone beyond the limits of rightful vengeance and that he could
Alexandre Dumas’ story is a story of revenge, forgiveness, power, powerlessness, happiness, despair and also justice. Justice for 13 years was not attained by Edmund Dantes. He suffered from a situation that he did not deserve to experienced. Edmund Dantes is a good man, he only want to live a simple and happy life with the people he loves. But envy and greed invaded the heart and mind of Ferdinand Mondego, his childhood friend, Mr. Villefort and Danglars. They put Edmund Dantes into jail.
First, Fernand was an extremely jealous man. He was never happy as long as Edmund looked happier, and when Edmund was happier, this filled Fernand with envy towards him. Fernand was the ultimate definition of a backstabber. He had a large craving to take his friend’s place, so he betrayed him when he was assumed to be trustworthy. Similar to that trait, Fernand was also majorly unloyal.
Justice, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary is the quality of being fair or just. This implies that justice would have something to do with being fair. I thought that if one of the things the law and legal system are about is maintaining and promoting justice and a sense of fairness, they might not be doing such a great job. An eye for an eye is fair? No, that would be too easy, too black and white. I could cite several examples where I thought a judge’s or jury’s ruling was unfair, however I will not simply due to the fact that this is to be about what justice is to me and not what justice was to the particular courtroom situation. I actually do believe in our legal system and I believe in justice. I
The Republic of Plato begins in a similar fashion that many other Platonic dialogues begin, with that of a question. The conversation between Socrates and the aged Cephalus becomes a philosophical discussion of what advantages money has brought to Cephalus' life. Cephalus replies that money has allowed him "to tell the truth and pay one's debts" (331 b). Nevertheless, Socrates believes this does not portray an accurate description of what justice is. The rest of the first book is a discussion of the definition of justice, mainly that of Thrasymachus' definition. Socrates takes his normal role as an interrogator of peoples' views. The conversation focuses on justice but actually must be viewed in the context of how each
In the book, “The Count of Monte Cristo”, the character Edmond Dantes has changed an outrageous amount throughout the entire book. Everything thing he has been through specifically taught him one thing. God is in control of every aspect of your life. Towards the beginning of the book, he is content with everything in his life. He thanks god for everything he’s given him. Edmond says, “God is always more powerful than man” (Dumas 21). He is a strong believer and often relates back to god and the fact that everything is his will.
The Oxford Dictionary states that revenge is “the action of hurting or harming someone in return for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands.” This gives the direct connotation that revenge has to be okay as long as the suffering is equal between both parties, but just like any harmful act, its true meaning is one of the most debatable topics to date. Well-known to many is that this topic is the main act of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, where many believe the Count takes his own acts of revenge too far. Others completely disagree with this statement, and instead believe that Monte Cristo is right in his actions because of the suffering he is going through in the book. On both sides of this argument, looking at one side of
Count of Monte Cristo was heartbroken, but he got Fernand into court and got him to confess that he did put Count of Monte Cristo into prison. Fernand's son Albert challenged Count of Monte Cristo into a dual and Mercedes realized that it was Edmon Dantes and she begged him not to kill him, but Count of Monte Cristo said that he will let Albert kill him. When they got to the woods where they were going to dual Albert said I will not dual with you because he found out that his dad Fernand sent Count of Monte Cristo to prison for 14 years and he said you were innocent going to the prison and that you suffered their for 14 years and said that he forgives
In the court of law, opinions are meant to be kept elsewhere; justice must be served based on facts. However, opinions will inevitably form regardless, of one’s intentions. So, before I begin to discuss what justice means to me, I must first offer some ground. According to dictionary.com, justice is “the moral principle determining just conduct.” Similarly, justice for me is served when neither vengeance nor self-righteousness intervenes with a punishment.
