Charles de Gaulle once said “Love is the strongest force in the world.” de Gaulle’s sentiment about love’s power holds true. In The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, love is the most powerful driving force. During this romantic novel, a man named Edmond Dantés gets falsely imprisoned for fourteen years. When he escapes as a rich man, he swears revenge on his enemies, but in the end, love prevents him from enacting several of his vengeful plans. A moral in The Count of Monte Cristo is that love is the strongest power in the world because it can stop revenge in its tracks and cause great joy.
Even in the most vengeful people, love can stop hatred and anger. When the Count of Monte Cristo escapes prison in Chateau d’If, he is spiteful

Fernand married Mercédès, adding jealousy to his anger. Fernand’s deeds led the Count to hate him. When the Count speaks of Fernand to Mercédès, “He [Monte Cristo] pronounced the name of Fernand with such hatred that Mercédès felt a shudder of fear run through her body” (375). During this conversation, Mercédès pleads to Monte Cristo for her son’s life. The Count knows that killing Albert would ruin Fernand both emotionally and socially. However, his love for Mercédès is so strong that it completely cancels out all of his hatred for Fernand. He gives up enacting revenge on Fernand then and there, because anything that will hurt Fernand will hurt Mercédès. Human nature is such that people will always choose love over spite. Monte Cristo does a similar thing later. As Novels for Students puts it, “A major step in Monte Cristo's recovery of his ability to love comes when he goes to great efforts to ensure that Valentine is united with Maximilien.” The Count tries to impose misery on a man named Villefort, a key player in his imprisonment, through the death of his daughter, Valentine. The Count refers to Villefort as a “cursed breed” (Dumas 402). Even though he hates Villefort and all of …show more content…
Alexandre Dumas shows us through characters and plot just how powerful love can be. It can take the place of hatred and anger. It can place happiness in the hearts of the most morose. Love is the most powerful thing in the universe, whether it be familial, romantic, or platonic. It was like this in 1844, when the novel was published, and it is still like this in 2017. One moral in The Count of Monte Cristo is that love is the strongest force in the world because it can take the place of hatred and
Mahatma Ghandi once said “Love is the strongest force the world possesses and yet it is the humblest imaginable.” Love is a very strong theme in the book The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. Many of the characters, including Mercedes, Haydee, Valentine, and Edmond experienced some form of true love. Whether it was love between family, friends, or partners, many of the characters in The Count of Monte Cristo experienced love. Love is different to each person, love fuels many of the characters actions, and love isn’t something that can be erased through events.
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, portrays how an attraction between two strangers can also attract stupefying danger. With selfishness and greed love can turn sour and stray from its original, adoring passion. Love is as unpredictable as the raging sea beneath the silver moons delicate rays. In an
Romeo’s hate towards Tybalt for killing Mercutio leads him to make irrational decisions. He is so blinded by hate, that he kills Tybalt. Up until Mercutio’s murder, Romeo loves Tybalt for his relation to Juliet. This can be seen when Romeo says “ but love thee better than thou canst devise till thou shalt know the reason of my love;”(3.1.65-66). The murder of Tybalt prompts Prince Escalus to sentence Romeo with banishment to Mantua where he learns of the so-called “death” of his Juliet. This news urges Romeo to visit the nearest chemist to ask for a vial of poison that will “disperse itself through all the veins”(5.1.65). The hasty decision to use this poison as a means of death stems from the unknown hate between the two families as well as the death of Mercutio and Juliet. Juliet had no other option than to turn to the sleeping poison, for fear that if she didn’t take the potion, she would have to marry Count Paris. Lord Capulet threatened to disown Juliet if she refused to marry Count Paris, as her parents had wished. Romeo and Juliet’s hate for the feud between their families is what prompts them to end their
Every person in their lifetime will encounter love. Love is a necessary evil in our lives. Using the moral lense to analyze the short stories “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson and “A Bolt of White Cloth” by Leon Rooke, we see that love cannot exist without evil. The characters of the stories all encounter evil through love by means of relationships, goodwill, as well as inanimate objects.
The first thing that someone does when meeting new people is question who they are and what their intentions are. By putting one’s faith in them they are taking a small leap of faith to trust this person and allow them into their lives. When the Count of Monte Cristo arrived in Paris he quickly gained the trust of many prominent Parisians. The Count is appears to be very wealthy and intelligent; therefore, he is accepted into a distinguished social circle. One of the families in this circle is the de Morcerfs. The de Morcerf’s son, Albert, is captured by Italian bandits and the Count of Monte Cristo saves him. Albert and his parents are very grateful for this spectacular rescue; this forms a quick bond of trust between the family and the Count. ‘You are welcome here,’ said the Count de Morcerf… ‘In saving the life of our son you have rendered us a service which commands our eternal gratitude….’ (Dumas 176). Later when the Count successfully has revenge on the de Morcerfs, Mercedes de Morcerf shows her faith in the Count when she begs him to spare her son’s, Albert’s, life. ‘…the fact that you’re still alive and that I've seen you again proves there’s a God above us. I trust Him from the bottom of my heart. Awaiting His help, I count on your word. You've told me my son will live; he will live…’ (Dumas 378). Mercedes feel confident in the Count and knows that she can have faith, for the Count is a honest man: ‘Edmond [the Count of Monte
Love is an essential part of life. Every individual wants to be loved, and needs someone to love. It is an element that is fundamental to the well-being of all human kind; it is that magic that can heal wounds. However love also has the capacity to traumatize a person if it is extracted from their life. While we all wish to experience love, many of us tend to find the often inevitable detachment to be quite painful. In the novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby's longing for Daisy Buchanan leads him to his own downfall. Similarly in the novel Hamlet, Hamlet's extreme love for his father and his hatred towards his mother play a major role in his tragedy. In these works, there are a number of motivating factors that contribute to the downfall
As the sky continues mourning, tears are running down her face. She caresses her beloved's face and stabs her heart with a dagger, for she would rather die than be alive without the love of her life. Every human being goes through heartbreak and the joyus wonders of ‘true love.’ Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, is the perfect embodiment of both unrequited and romantic love. Paris trying to get the affection of Juliet and Romeo being so in love with Juliet are types of love that are very different but in a way alike.
Love is defined as the intense feeling of deep affection. In the play, Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, the attraction between the two protagonists, Romeo and Juliet, does not factually classify as true love. Meanwhile, lust is a concept in which is commonly mistaken for love, which is very apparent throughout this classic “love story” of Romeo and Juliet. While others could debate that Romeo and Juliet’s love, was love at first sight, it is debateable that their feelings towards one another were pure lust. Romeo and Juliet are too immature to fully understand the concept of love as they are too young and hormone-driven, they were both in search for escapism from their present troubles, and they had an excessive amount of
Ever wondered how love can bring you happiness and pain and make you sane and crazy at the same time. How this emotion can change you and make you accept things you are not used to. How this emotion can overpower you in many ways in which you did not know existed. In Lancelot by Chretien de Troyes, the power of love is a commanding driving force that can dominate a person’s mind, body, and soul and one who is courageous enough to love sometimes undergoes serious consequences. Consequences that are driven from the power of love that harm and cause hardship to the one who is determined to seek love.
The Count Of Monte Cristo Your not worried about anything, are you?” said Danglers. “It seems to me everything is going so perfectly for you’ ‘that’s exactly what terrifies me,’ replied Dantés. ‘I don’t think man was meant to attain happiness so easily. Happiness is like those places I fairy tales whose gates are guarded by dragons: we must fight in order to conquer it.
However strong the emotional attitude of prejudices may be in Othello, Love is the most powerful emotion and ironically the emotion that leads to the most vulnerability. Loves of all kinds are tested in the tragedy and ultimately all fail to rectify the horrible situation. Marital love for Othello and Desdemona serve as both a heaven and a hell on earth. As Othello portrays by saying,
Fernand and Danglars talk about how to get rid of Edmond so the send a false police report about him.Edmond gets arrested and is sent to Chateau d’if for life for being accused of being a Bonapartist spy. Edmond escapes from jail with the help of Abbe Faria. He travels to Monte Cristo to claim the treasure. He returns to Marseilles in disguise as the Count of Monte Cristo and other alias. He tells people that Edmond Dantès is “dead”. Albert and Franz meet the Count. Franz gets a ransom note saying that Albert has been kidnapped and The Count saves Albert from Luis Vampa (who was his friend). The Count encounters Danglars about buy his prized horses from him. The horses escape and terrorized Madame Villefort and Edward her son. The Count saves them by having his slave lasso them. The Count invites them to his party and reveals that there was a murder at his house where Danglars used to live. Villefort’s mother and father in laws were killed. Valentine’s grandfather has a stroke and doctors said he was poisoned. He narrowed down that she poisoned him when she bought his
In chapter 21 starting on page 119, the so called love of the Count of Monte Cristo is actually a mask for his hatred and revenge. Albert gets kidnapped by italian bandits led by Luigi Vampa. Vampa is a long time friend of the Count of Monte Cristo and The Count actually set up Albert to get kidnapped by him far ahead of the time. The Count did all of this out of hatred and the want for revenge on his enemies. It does appear to Albert and Franz that the Count is a kind gentleman, but he actually helped them so that Albert
The time periods that each text is set in varies and it is therefore interesting to note that this does not change the fundamentals, we are prepared to make sacrifices for love. All the characters were forced by restrictions of the time to make difficult decisions and in these cases they were willing to give their lives, either physically or emotionally, for their love. It shows the extremity of love, that it is worth more to these literary
Written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the novel Love in the Time of Cholera deals with a passionate man's unfulfilled love and his quest of more than 50 years to win the heart of his true love. It's without question one of the most emotional depictions of love, but what separates it from similar novels is its suggestion that lovesickness is a literal disease, a plague comparable to cholera.
